Jesus: Victor on the Cross Matt 27:32-56

The Crucifixion of Jesus Matt 27:32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of the skull ).

The Crucifixion of Jesus 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The Mocking of Jesus 38 Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!

The Mocking of Jesus 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 He saved others, they said, but He can t save Himself! He s the king of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue Him now if He wants Him, for He said, I am the Son of God. 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with Him also heaped insults on Him.

The Death of Jesus 45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? (which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ). 47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, He s calling Elijah. 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, Now leave Him alone. Let s see if Elijah comes to save Him. 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He gave up His spirit.

The Death of Jesus 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, Surely He was the Son of God! 55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee s sons.

Intro the 4 gospels, One Christ Matthew Mark Luke John KING The Prophesied King SERVANT The Obedient Servant MAN The Perfect Man GOD The Divine Son to Jews to Romans to Greeks to everyone

Intro Jesus, Victor on the cross? Jesus came to initiate and implement the New Covenant but was a) Rejected by the Jewish rulers and teachers b) Misunderstood by the Jewish masses c) Abandoned by His disciples d) Unjustly punished by the Roman authorities Yet in His death, He was victorious and achieved all that the Father sent Him to do.

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship A)By Pilate 37 Above His head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. John 19:19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship A)By Pilate Not just a charge, but also a title. The Jewish leaders were upset and wanted it changed to: He said, I am the king of the Jews. Pilate refused. Pilate wrote the truth, though cynically. God overruled his actions for Jesus Kingship to be declared. Jesus is the King of the Jews.

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship B) By prophecies fulfilled: a) 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. Psa. 22:18 not something that the soldiers knew or had any intention of fulfilling. b) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; (Psalm 69:21) c) 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads. (Psalm 22:7; Ps 109:25)

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship B) By prophecies fulfilled: d) 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue Him now if He wants Him, (Psalm 22:8) e) 35 When they had crucified Him, (Psalm 22:16 they pierce my hands and my feet.) f) 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? (which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ). (Psalm 22:1) In the Old Testament there are over 330 Messianic prophecies that were fulfilled in Jesus.

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship C) By phenomena supernatural 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. Nature seem to respond to what happened to Jesus. - intense darkness for 3 hours - the temple curtain split open - the earth quaked, rocks split open, dead raised to life.

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship D) Proclamation by the Centurion and soldiers 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, Surely He was the Son of God! Angel to Mary: He will be called Son of God Satan: If you are the Son of God Nathanael, demons, disciples, Martha, Peter: You are the Son of God High Priests: Are you the Son of God?

1) Declared: Jesus Kingship and Sonship D) Proclamation by the Centurion and soldiers Jesus, even in death, was victorious when the various parties declared Him as King and Son of God. We enter into a vital relationship with Jesus when we acknowledge Him as King and Son of God. 9 If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom 10:9)

2) Displayed: Jesus wondrous love Jesus did not come down from the cross in spite of: a) Severe suffering b) Intense mocking Why did He come down from the cross? Not that He could not save Himself, but that He would not. If He saved Himself, then nobody else could be saved! He knew His mission in God s redemptive plan. It was His wondrous love for us that kept Him there.

2) Displayed: Jesus wondrous love b) Simon from Cyrene who bore the cross for Jesus (v32) Simon, father of Alexander and Rufus (Mk 15:21) Greet Rufus (Rom 16:13) As Simon watched the crucifixion scene, what Jesus did and said must have won over his heart, resulting in him and his sons becoming Christians.

2) Displayed: Jesus wondrous love C) Women followed Jesus from Galilee to care for Him they weren t afraid to identify with Jesus they were responding to the love the Lord Jesus had shown them earlier.

3) Demonstrated: Jesus victory over death 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He gave up his spirit. At just the right time He chose, Jesus died voluntarily. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. (John 10:17-18)

3) Demonstrated: Jesus victory over death What did He cry out? It is finished. (John 19:30) That was no groan of a victim; that was a loud shout of triumph. It is finished = tetelestai. It is finished, it stands finished, and it always will be finished!

3) Demonstrated: Jesus victory over death What was finished? a) all the Old Testament prophecies concerning His death fulfilled b) all the types and shadows in the Old Testament explained and abolished c) all obedience to the law of God was finished in Christ crucified d) all the power of Satan and sin was defeated for God s people on the Cross e) all the justice of God was satisfied on behalf of His people when Christ died on the Cross.

3) Demonstrated: Jesus victory over death When Christ died, He put away and buried the man of sin that He had become on our behalf. (1 Cor 15:20-23) He died as the Last Adam in order to put an end to the adamic line. (1 Cor 15:47) Christ s death didn t take the punishment of God so that Adam could be restored to God. Adam (that kind, that man, that nature, that seed,) is not reconciled to God. He died so that we might be reconciled to God in Him. (2 Cor 5:18)

3) Demonstrated: Jesus victory over death In Him, we are a New Creation. (2 Cor 5:17) We are not reconciled to God as individuals. We are reconciled to God as the body of Christ, the Church. (Eph 1:22,23) We are reconciled to God as one New Man, (Eph 2:12-16) neither Jew or Gentile, but in Christ who is all and in all. Our reconciliation with God is in the One who calls Himself the Resurrection and the Life.
