3 MARK 9:30 30 Then they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it. For He was teaching His disciples

4 WHAT WAS JESUS TEACHING HIS DISCIPLES?

5 PRINCIPLE: Misconceptions make reality blurry

6 LESSON 1: The Messiah must die and rise again

7 MARK 9:31 31 For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise three days later.

8 MARK 9:32 32 But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.

9 LESSON 2: Humility is key in the Kingdom

10 MARK 9: Then they came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? 34 But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest. 35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. 36 Then He

11 took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent Me.

12 OBSERVATION: Jesus did not condemn their desire to be great

34 JAMES 3: But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don t brag and deny the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.

40 JAMES 4:6 6 But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble

41 PROVERBS 16:5 5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Assuredly he will not be unpunished.

42 JAMES 3 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceloving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy.

43 MARK 9: Then He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent Me.

44 MATTHEW 18:5-6 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 Then He called a child to Him and had him stand among them. 3 I assure you, He said, unless you are converted and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

45 MATTHEW 18:5-6 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one child like this in My name welcomes Me.

46 MATTHEW When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on the left.

47 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me.

48 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You? 40 And the King will answer them, I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.
