Dedication Celebration on Thursday, August 27! In 1926, this third St. Stephen Church building was dedicated by Most Reverend John A. Floersh of Louisville, KY on September 6. On December 10, 1937, the Diocese of Owensboro was carved out of the Archdiocese of Louisville; two weeks later, news came from Rome that Reverend Francis R. Cotton, then chancellor of Louisville, had been named the first Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro. On Tuesday, January 18, 1937, Saint Stephen church was designated as the Cathedral of the new diocese. The installation of Bishop Cotton was held on Tuesday, March 6, Since, on September 6, I will be in Rome with 19 other classmates to celebrate our 40th ordination anniversary, I have requested your Parish Pastoral Council to move this year s celebration to Thursday, August 27. We will celebrate Mass at 6:00PM, followed immediately by a catered dinner downstairs. Please make every effort to celebrate with our parish! II. That Man Is You (TMIY) is an interactive men s program focused on the development of men in the modern world. It combines the best research from science with the teachings of the Catholic faith and the wisdom of the Saints to develop a vision of authentic men capable of transforming themselves, their families and greater society. I ask the men of this parish to reflectively and seriously consider becoming a part of the Thursday morning meeting in the Community Center. Doors will open at 5:45AM, breakfast at 6:00AM, presentation at 6:15AM, finished by 7:30AM. This program has been favorably used throughout the U.S. and more particularly in the nearby archdiocese of Louisville. I ask the entire parish to pray for the success of this opportunity for the men in our parish. III. Saint Monica, Pray for Us! Monica ( ) knew the pain of disappointment, an unfaithful husband named Patricius who drank too much, and a promiscuous son, Augustine, who lived an immoral life. Through patience and love, her husband had a change of heart, choosing to become a Christian. Augustine s conversion was a much more difficult task; Monica prayed constantly and fasted daily, but nothing seemed to work, so she consulted Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, for guidance. Through prayerful intercession to God, the two of them managed to lead Augustine to the waters of Baptism. Monica exemplifies that unconditional love and persistent prayer are portals for God s saving grace. IV. Saint Augustine, Pray for Us! Augustine ( ) was born to a pagan father and a devout Christian mother. This wild, unruly young man later became one of Western Christianity s most influential figures. He tried it all: living with a woman, fathering a child out of wedlock, and dabbling in Manichaeism, a heretical belief similar to Gnosticism. Through his mother s prayers and friendship with Ambrose, he eventually converted to Christianity, was ordained a priest, and became Bishop of Hippo in 396. His prolific writing formulated theories and doctrines on original sin, just war, human will, divine predestination, the Trinity, and Christology. The following Prayer is attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo: Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts maybe all holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Drawn my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, O Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. Amen. In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

THIS WEEK S WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES We are pleased to wish those couples celebrating their anniversary a very happy and blessed Anniversary. 24--Bill and Angie Drury, 31 years Raymond and Barbara Trogolo, 58 years 26--Rod and Kathryn Crowe, 37 years 27--Doug and Cheryl Hayden, 26 years 30--Ed and Gloria Cecil, 46 years CHRISTIAN INITIATION Regularly, Fr. Jerry challenges each of us to consider ways that we might serve the needs of one another through the gifts we have freely received from God. One gift this faith community shares is the gift of our Catholic faith. Perhaps you are being challenged to share with those who are seeking more information into the faith through the RCIA process. The entire Christian community is responsible for the initiation of its newest disciples. Every parishioner has a role. We are part of that mentoring community that apprentices the new disciples. By observing our prayer, words, deeds and actions in the parish and in the broader community our newest members learn what it means to live as a Catholic Christian today. We provide the examples. We are the models. RCIA depends on all of us because we make up the Christian community. We meet on Wednesday at 6:00PM in the parish Media Center. Come and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, MASS WITH BISHOP MEDLEY: SAVE THE DATE Bishop Medley will celebrate Mass with all students in Religious Education/Faith Formation on September 2, at Precious Blood Catholic Church at 6:00PM. For more information, contact Donna Murphy, PARISH RAFFLE TICKETS Raffle tickets for our 12 th Annual Picnic, September 19, are available at each exit door. This year s Raffle includes $4600 in cash prizes. We appreciate your efforts to make our picnic a success and to continue the spirit of community at St. Stephen Cathedral. If you would like to work on any gaming booth during the picnic, contact Larry Lyon, WORD OF LIFE The cost of the damage caused by such selfish lack of concern is much greater than the economic benefits to be obtained. Where certain species are destroyed or seriously harmed, the values involved are incalculable. We can be silent witnesses to terrible injustices if we think that we can obtain significant benefits by making the rest of humanity, present and future, pay the extremely high costs of environmental deterioration. CATHEDRAL PRESCHOOL Courtesy of V.I.S. - Vatican Information Service CHURCH ANNIVERSARY/ APPRECIATION DINNER This year, our annual celebration of the Anniversary of the Dedication of St. Stephen Cathedral will be Thursday, August 27, with a special Mass at 6:00PM. The original playground was installed when the Preschool was established in We appreciate your support. Hendrickson Fam, L/D EUCHARISTIC MEDITATION The words of John s Gospel are the great proclamation of the Eucharist, after the miraculous multiplication of bread near Capernaum. Anticipating, as it were, the time even before the Eucharist was instituted, Christ revealed what it was. He spoke thus: I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh (Jn 6:51). And when these words brought protests from many who were listening Jesus added: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him (Jn 6:53-56). These are words which concern the very essence of the Eucharist. Behold, Christ came into the world to bestow upon man divine life. He not only proclaimed the Good News but he also instituted the Eucharist which is to make present until the end of time his redeeming mystery. And as the means of expressing this he chose the elements of nature, the bread and wine, the food and drink that man must consume to maintain his life. The Eucharist is precisely this food and drink. This food contains in itself all the power of the Redemption wrought by Christ. St. John Paul II, Homily, June 1, 1997 Courtesy of V.I.S. - Vatican Information Service A VOCATION VISTA It is through prayer that the Church engages in the battle for peace. Prayer opens the heart not only to a deep relationship with God but also to an encounter with others marked by respect, understanding, esteem and love. Liturgical prayer is the summit towards which the action of the Church tends and, at the same time, the source from which she draws her strength. In particular, the Eucharistic celebration, the source and summit of the Christian life, is a limitless wellspring for all authentic Christian commitment to peace. 7 6 About the Mass Movement For a real comparison to the Mass, we would have to choose a folk dance, a circle dance, something that was alive in nearly every culture until this century and is still a part of many societies. In such a dance, no one is a spectator, everyone is a participant. There may be leaders, but each person knows the steps and is at home in the dance. And the dance does work. It makes the invisible community visible. It is an image of what life in this world is all about. It is the spirit of that life, and it somehow shows each dancer how to keep on when the dance seems to end. Our Sunday liturgy is a circle dance with many movements we all know: taking the holy water and signing the body as we enter, bows and genuflections, signs of the cross great and small, greetings of peace, taking bread and cup in the hands, even reaching into pocket or purse for some financial sharing, some pooling of our resources to get our common work accomplished. All these things we know well to do. Let us give each movement, each gesture, a fullness that is new each Sunday. Gabe Huck, 1992, Archdiocese of Chicago. Moving Home silence and pray. We sit and raise our faces toward the one who proclaims God s word. We stand and sing our alleluias, pray over the gifts of bread and wine, and process to receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Soon, we process again, back to our homes and work and world. It is a dance made up of many movements bows and genuflections, signs of the cross, hands held out to receive bread and wine, gestures of peace. We learn these movements, as we learned to crawl and walk and ride a bike, not simply for the sake of learning them, but to bring us somewhere home to the reign of God. Victoria Tufano, 1992, Archdiocese of Chicago. For Reflection 1. Imagine that our liturgy is done in mime in complete silence, with no props. What motions does everyone go through? Are these movements done deliberately, broadly and elegantly? 2. How do we teach our common gestures to children, to those preparing for baptism or full communion, and the newly baptized? 3. What are your memories of religious processions? 4. What religious gestures are part of your daily life? Our liturgy is a dance in many ways. Dozens of small processions bring us together. We stand and sing, pause for
