What happened to the "Holy Ghost"? To our ears, the word "ghost" conjures up images of graveyards and Halloween. Although this understanding reflects the immaterial nature of God, it fails to capture a more descriptive quality that is found in the languages of the Bible. The word for "wind" or "breath" is ruah in Hebrew and pneuma in Greek. The Bible uses these terms to describe the activity of God in history. It is the "wind" or "breath" of God that sweeps over the waters at creation (Genesis 1:2), gives direction to the prophets (Micah 3:8), and descends upon Jesus at His baptism (Mark 1:10). With the resurrection of Jesus, the Church came to see that this activity was the work of a distinct person of the Holy Trinity. This person was identified by the word for "wind" or "breath," which in Latin was spiritus. Our English spirit comes from this root and can still be recognized in its original sense in such words as "inspiration", "respiration" or "perspiration." Therefore, the decision to refer to the third person of the Trinity as "the Holy Spirit," rather than as "the Holy Ghost" is not an arbitrary change. "Spirit" more closely reflects the biblical imagery, which actually describes the action of God as a "wind" or "breath" in our history. Happy Pentecost! Come, Holy Spirit! II. A Living Language, an exhibition of more than 100 works of art by Brother Martin Erspamer, OSB, a monk of St. Meinrad Archabbey, Indiana, is featured at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, May 14 to July 24. A talk entitled "A Gallery Walk Through the Exhibition" with the artist is scheduled for 2:30pm (today) on Sunday, May 15. A nationally recognized liturgical artist, Erspamer has designed stained glass installations in dozens of Roman Catholic and Protestant churches across the country and is a frequent consultant for religious communities. Brother Martin was a designer for Emil Frei Stained Glass Studios, St. Louis, Missouri, the company whose Munich studio created the stained glass windows at the turn of the 20th century for the former St. Joseph Church in Owensboro. These windows are now owned by the Owensboro Museum of Fine Arts, which constructed a special wing in 1994 to permanently display the collection. III. Cathedral Preschool 51 "Graduates": we know that graduation means "beginning!" Indeed these four year olds "have the world by the tail on a downward swing" as they begin a new phase in their life! I dare say the 51 youngsters are better prepared, because they have been touched by the competent, creative, and caring hands of our Cathedral Pre-school team! Congratulations! IV. Carmel Home is a magnificent blessing for our Diocese. On Thursday of this week the priests, along with Bishop Bill Medley, will gather with the priests who reside at the Carmel Home, including Bishop Emeritus John McRaith and those priests who live in the Cotton Apartments (behind Carmel Home). Prayer will be at 4:00pm followed by dinner at 5:30pm. Pray for our bishops and the priests and deacons of the Diocese. V. Deacon Basilio Az Cuc will be ordained a priest, along with Deacon Jamie Dennis, on Saturday, May 28, at 10:00am at the Cathedral (obviously, the regularly scheduled 9:00am Mass and confessions will be canceled as a Diocesan event always takes precedence over parish events). This will be followed by a reception. We are grateful to Deacon Basilio for his presence with us during his last year of theology. We wish him well in his new assignment as parochial vicar to Fr. Richard Meredith at Saints Peter & Paul Parish in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Fr. Jamie Dennis will be parochial vicar to Fr. Michael Clark at Blessed Mother Parish. In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

Pentecost proclaims that the door locked for fifty days is thrown open at last. No longer closed in on itself, the community speaks to crowds from different backgrounds, distant lands, exotic languages. Everyone hears their native language. The Spirit does not restore Babel s uniformity, but forges unityin-diversity of language, race, nationality embracing all without exception. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pentecost s Spirit summons us afresh from mediocrity and isolation to share God s mercy with the world. This is our mission! Francis exclaims. We are given the gift of the tongue of the Gospel and the fire of the Holy Spirit, so that while we proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm... the heart of the peoples, drawing near to Him, the way, the truth, and the life (Regina Coeli address, Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015). Perhaps you know someone who has expressed interest in you as a Catholic. Invite them to come and learn more about Catholicism. There is an open-door to all who are casually curious, seriously seeking or firmly committed to becoming Catholic. Now is an excellent time to inquire. Our RCIA process is a year-round experience. It does not have a beginning or ending date, like a school year calendar. RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the parish Media Center. Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270/ , or donna.murphy@pastoral.org. Buy SCRIP Gift Cards at OCS! Did you know you can help raise money for St. Stephen Cathedral when you buy SCRIP? Those of you who have children or grandchildren in the Owensboro Catholic Schools know well how to raise money with the power of a SCRIP gift card. If you do not currently buy SCRIP for a friend or family member, we would like you to consider taking an extra 10 minutes of your time to stop by the SCRIP Office (located in the back of Owensboro Catholic High School) to help out our parish. Simply tell the SCRIP volunteer your family name is St. Stephen Cathedral and the parish will earn a percentage of every dollar you spend! Buy Menards, Walmart, Real Hacienda, Old Hickory, and MORE!! Some local merchants give up to 20% and St. Stephen Cathedral will receive three quarters of that at the end of the school year. Call the OCS SCRIP office with any question you might have! I had never felt so alone as after my spouse died. I had never opened up to anyone else before. My Stephen Minister helped me work through the painful feelings and helped me find hope again. Don t be alone! God doesn t want us to be all alone. The Lord wants us to turn to others when things are bothering us. Stephen Ministers will walk with you through your troubles and be there for you when you need them. Just call the Stephen Ministry Office, , and you will be glad you did. Forming Good Stewards Good stewards are formed by other good stewards! 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. Pentecost [from the Greek word for fiftieth ] is the day the Apostles discerned and accepted the power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim Jesus Christ to people from many nations, cultures, languages and religious beliefs. The people listening to them came from many countries heard the Apostles in their own tongue. Amazing! More amazing is that people with a variety of religious beliefs came to believe in Jesus. Later Paul wrote to Christians in Corinth, a seaport city with people from many nations, cultures, languages and religious beliefs. He told them something so obvious we often forget it: Each of us is a person with a unique array of talents, abilities and gifts that God has given to us to use for ourselves and for others - material wealth, intelligence, artistic talent, athletic ability, the gift of music, and many others. God intends for us to enjoy them ourselves and to share them with others. How are we doing with that? Within the coming weeks, we will be sending out a call to TEST the system. We need your help to make this successful.
