Annual Priests' Convocation: All of us must continue our education, unless we want to wither on the vine. Many of you are aware that the second full week of January is ordinarily the time when the priests of our diocese gather with our Bishop to study, to reflect, to discuss, to pray together. Father Suneesh and I will be away from the parish from Monday, January 11, through Thursday evening, January 14. We will have the 7:00AM Mass on Monday, January 11, and 7:00AM and 12:05PM Mass on Friday, January 15; otherwise, there will be a prayer service with the Scriptures of the day at regularly scheduled Mass times. Please pray for Bishop Medley and the priests of our Diocese, especially for Father Suneesh and me. II. Annual Men's Conference will be at Saint Stephen Cathedral on Saturday, February 13, beginning with registration in the Community Center at 8:30AM; the first conference begins at 9:30AM. There will be ample opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, with a dozen priests available as confessors. The day will be crowned by celebrating Mass with Bishop William Medley, our chief shepherd of the Diocese of Owensboro, at 5:00PM. Every man, 18 years of age or older, is invited and asked to seriously consider giving this day to continuing spiritual formation. Nothing to lose; everything to gain! III. Parish Retreat: You are invited to participate in the Koinonia (in Greek means "community") Retreat at Saint Stephen Cathedral, beginning Friday at 5:00PM, and ending Sunday at 5:00PM. You will not regret giving these 48 hours to strengthening your faith! Yes, you will go home to sleep in your own bed! Reserve the fourth weekend of Lent, March 4-6. IV. Called to Serve: During the special season of Christmas, thanks to sacristans, servers, ushers/ hospitality ministers, cantors, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, Diocesan Event Welcomers, and those who helped transform our worship space from Advent to Christmas to Ordinary Time. Especially during this time of year, it takes real commitment and flexibility to serve our community as a liturgical minister. A special thank you to Michael Bogdan, Director of Liturgy, and James Wells, Director of Music, for ministering so well! V. Christmas Gratitude: Thank you for your cards, prayers, and assorted gifts during the Christmas season; your many expressions of support and love are valued beyond measure. On behalf of the entire pastoral staff, I also thank you for the fruit, cookies, candy, pastries, and gifts you bestowed upon us! Your kindness and thoughtfulness are much appreciated! In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

Howard EUCHARISTIC MEDITATION Dear friends, we don t ever thank the Lord enough for the gift he has given us in the Eucharist! It is a very great gift and that is why it is so important to go to Mass on Sunday. Go to Mass not just to pray, but to receive Communion, the bread that is the Body of Jesus Christ who saves us, forgives us, unites us to the Father. It is a beautiful thing to do! And we go to Mass every Sunday because that is the day of the resurrection of the Lord. That is why Sunday is so important to us. And in this Eucharist we feel this belonging to the Church, to the People of God, to the Body of God, to Jesus Christ. We will never completely grasp the value and the richness of it. Let us ask him, then, that this Sacrament continue to keep his presence alive in the Church and to shape our community in charity and communion, according to the Father s heart. This is done throughout life, but is begun on the day of our First Communion. It is important that children be prepared well for their First Communion and that every child receive it, because it is the first step of this intense belonging to Jesus Christ, after Baptism and Confirmation. It shows us the beauty of God. This is precisely the hope, the prophecy that the Church gives us today: she needs men and women of hope, even in the midst of problems. Because hope opens horizons, hope is freeing, it does not enslave and it always finds a way to set a situation straight. 6 PERPETUAL ADORATION ANNIVERSARY Carmel Home invites all to be one of their adorers (full-time or sub). Call Marti Castlen at CHRISTIAN INITIATION In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis tells us that the Church needs radical, committed, passionate disciples. He says this is what the church of the future will look like: The Church which goes forth is a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first (cf. 1Jn 4:19), and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. Such a community has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father s infinite mercy. (The Gospel of Joy, 24) Pope Francis challenges us to take the initiative for evangelization. Perhaps you know someone in your family, in your neighborhood, work, school who could use some Good News in their life. Maybe they have never personally experienced Jesus in their life or maybe they were baptized, but have not practiced their faith for years. Whatever their situation, we have much to offer them. We, who are called to be joy-filled followers of Christ, are challenged to share that joy openly and take the first step of reaching out to them. Ask them if they are interested in learning more about Catholicism, about the Good News of Jesus. It s that simple. Invite them to stop by the parish Media Center on Wednesdays at 6:00PM. Maybe you are that person who has yet to respond to the loving embrace that Jesus has come in the flesh to offer you! Our RCIA process, your RCIA process, is one place where we can share this Good News. Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! DEEP APPRECIATION There are no words to express my deep appreciation for the retirement celebration so craftily sandwiched into the Epiphany Hymn Festival/Potluck. It was an exciting evening for me, unbelievable! I can only humbly say Thank you. It has been but the stewardship of God s grace given to me for your benefit! I have truly enjoyed every moment as Office Assistant. I m afraid to mention names, but I must try. Heartfelt thanks to Deacon Dirck Curry and his wife Chona who coordinated the retirement aspect of the celebration. Thanks to Fr. Jerry Riney, Fr. Suneesh Mathew, Larry Lyon, and Donna Murphy for their gracious toasts; a special word of thanks to Fr. John Vaughan for coming from Madisonville. Many thanks, too, to Mayor Ron Payne for presenting me with the key to the City of Owensboro. I will use it judiciously, and I have the prefect nook for it! Thanks to Lupe Ellis who coordinated the Potluck portion of the celebration, including the Kings array. It was a wonderful meal and lovely celebration. Thanks to all for the delicious food! Special thanks to Todd Johnson for the delicious pulled pork and to Agnes and Andrew Reynolds for the cake! Lupe s dedicated helpers were Sue Cooper, Mary Lou Green, Rita Mauzy, Mary Beth Hurley, Moggie Riney, Theresa Ray, Cathy Ray, Jeff and Mary Edna Murphey, and Bern Tooley. Rob Abney, Donna Duffy and Jason Curry were photographers, and the Kings were Henry Booth, Will Hemingway and Andrew Ellis. Jack Calhoun found Baby Jesus in the King cake. Last, but certainly not least, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone for your presence, and for the outpouring of your good wishes, cards, gifts, calls, visits! It is my prayer that in our journey together in faith, we will not lose sight of the Star! With love, Ruth Ann Carrico
