Welcome Back to Michael Conley! Saint Stephen Cathedral honored Michael Conley, our former Director of Music & Liturgy, at the Owensboro Symphony Chamber Orchestra (directed by Nick Palmer), and Kentucky Wesleyan College Kantorei Chamber Singers (directed by Dr. Bradley Naylor), on April 17th. In addition to this concert, we further surprised him with a beautifully framed photo of the Cathedral presented by our choir members at the reception following the concert. Michael was also greeted with a sustained applause and standing ovation in gratitude for his 37 years of service to this faith community. Thank you, Michael Conley! II. Arts at the Cathedral! Last Sunday we treated the community of Owensboro to a wonderful concert by the Owensboro Symphony Chamber Orchestra and the Kentucky Wesleyan College Chamber Singers. This concert was sponsored by parishioners who contributed to our Arts at the Cathedral Fund. Thank you! If you would like to contribute to the Fund, it is gratefully open to receive your tax-deductible donations at any time. Please know that this fund will sponsor future concerts, art exhibits, and more. Arts at the Cathedral was established by our Communication/Marketing Committee. Thank you to all who have donated and all who enjoy this cultural opportunity! III. Lector Workshop: our lectors at the Cathedral do a wonderful job proclaiming God's Word! Its theme from Matthew 5:7, Blessed are the merciful, echoes Pope Francis warning that the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture. In countercultural witness, therefore, the time has come, says Francis, for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Jesus affirms the same in today s Gospel. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another (John 13:34). Francis concludes, The Church s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love. Jesus too asserts, This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35). Thus mercy makes young the Church, the world, and everyone. Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope (Misericordiae Vultus, 10). Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. As I have loved you, so you should also love one another. Jesus reminds us of the command God gave the Israelites through Moses to Love your neighbor as yourself. (Leviticus 19:18 / Luke 10:27). Next, Jesus tells us to Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. (Matthew 5:43, Luke 6:27). Psychologists now realize that we must love ourselves to be able to love others. That is how God created us. Sadly, many of us do not love ourselves enough to feel that we can be loved by others, or even by God. And there is the risk that the only one we love is ourselves. Jesus takes love to a new dimension. Love one another as I have loved you - unconditionally; without a pre-condition of recognition; without expectation of being loved in return. God made us stewards of His love for ourselves and for others. Are we ready to give an account of our stewardship when Jesus ask, What have you done with My love? How have you loved one another as I love you? Pope Saint John Paul II, Laborem Exercens COVERED WITH CHRIST: Your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3 The Chinese language has a great symbol for the truth of that verse. The word for righteousness is a combination of two pictures. On the top is a lamb. Beneath the lamb is a person. The lamb covers the person. Isn t that the essence of righteousness? The Lamb of Christ over the child of God? Whenever the Father looks down on you, what does he see? He sees His Son, the perfect Lamb of God, hiding you. Christians are like their ancestor Abel. We come to God by virtue of the flock. Cain came with the work of his own hands. God turned him away. Abel came, and we come, dependent upon the sacrifice of the Lamb, and we are accepted. Like the Chinese symbol, we are covered by the lamb, hidden in Christ. When God looks at you, he doesn t see you; he sees Jesus. And how does He respond when He sees Jesus? He rends the heavens and vibrates the earth with the shout, You are my son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with you. (Mark 1:11). Max Lucado, Grace for the Moment/A Love Worth Giving As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11 PERPETUAL ADORATION The Carmel Home invites all to be one of their Adorers (fulltime or sub).
