4 May 6th, 2012 The Fifth Sunday of Easter 4 Dear friends, The 50-day Paschal season ends with the Feast of Pentecost and is in a way prolonged with the special festal Sundays of Trinity and Corpus Christi that follow. Also, this month of May sees the celebrations of First Holy Communion Masses for our young children. These and other thoughts lead me to spend the next few weeks reflecting with you on these pages on the Catholic doctrines associated with the great Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we read: 1373 "Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us," is present in many ways to his Church: 197 in His word, in his Church's prayer, "where two or three are gathered in my name," 199 in the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned, 199 in the sacraments of which He is the author, in the sacrifice of the Mass, and in the person of the minister. But "He is present... most especially in the Eucharistic species." The mode of Christ's presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as "the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend." 201 In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained." 202 "This presence is called 'real' - by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be 'real' too, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes Himself wholly and entirely present." 203 There cannot be the slightest doubt from the very earliest writings of the early Fathers and teachers that the Church has always regarded what happens at the Eucharistic Liturgy (what we now call the Mass in the West and known in East as the Divine Mysteries) as an authentic and real change in the very being of the offered bread and wine. In this change, though imperceptible to the senses, the natural bread and wine become the very substance of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of the God-Man, Christ Jesus. Well before the Church possessed the developed language to express (though never to fully explain) the nature of this change she always held and still holds that the Eucharistic Bread and Wine are not mere, or common, bread and wine. From St. Justin the Martyr in the first century down to the mature theology of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and the teaching of the Ecumenical Councils in the second millennium we see the unaltered conviction of the Catholic Church that the Eucharist contains Christ Himself under the appearances of bread and wine. This indeed is the Mystery of Faith par excellence, and to deny it, or downplay it, would do violence of the very foun- to use words attributed to St. Thomas More. For us Catholics the moment of the Consecration in which a validly ordained priest utters the words of Christ as handed down by the written and oral tradition of the Catholic Church marks the end of mere natural bread and wine and the beginning of what Catholic theology calls the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. That Real Presence of Jesus Christ, God and Man, lasts as long as the visibility of the physical species persists. Hence the care with which the Church in her ministers handles the Sacred Species and treats even the physical particles of the Blessed Sacrament. While avoiding any artificiality or forced preciousness in manner, this reality of the Eucharist should evoke in both clergy and lay faithful a palpable reserve, reverence, and awe. Casualness or a careless informality has no place at the Mass or in the treatment of the Blessed Sacrament at Communion and afterward. This parish has long been blessed with the deep sense of reverence for the Eucharist. The very fact that Tabernacle has literally and figuratively central to our lives. An established custom of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament several hours While Christ is present in the soul by indwelling grace, in the proclamation of Sacred Scripture in the Liturgy, and in the body of the Church assembled in the persons of a congregation at Mass, it is the Eucharistic Presence solely that is We all must be in the literal sense - in how we speak, act, and comport ourselves when treating of this Sacrament lest we injure the dignity of the One who is present and dull our sense of faith and reverence. We all can notice and criticize a care-less celebration of a Mass, or notice a possibly irreverent reception and handling of the Blessed Sacrament. Indeed, the recently revised Roman Missal makes the point forcefully in restoring some traditional Catholic terms such as Chalice Sad to say, a lack of reverence can occur precisely at First Holy Communion Masses where while the children are well-trained and reverent, many adult guests seem unfamiliar with the Mass and can make outwardly awkward, if not irreverent, Communions themselves. As the celebrant of these Masses I make every effort to celebrate First Holy Communion pleasantly, yet with rever- Communion be the main focus. Everything else is secondary. May this month of Mary, one of whose many titles is Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, bring many blessings both to our First Communicants and to us all! Fr. Hewes

The trip to Atlantic City is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16th. Regreattably, the bus has gone up again. The cost will be $40 (an increase of $2.00) with a $30 give back from Showboat. Holy Saturday in Arabic is known as "Saturday of the Light". Parishioners would fill the Church, courtyard and the roof. When the Patriarch exits the Tomb with the Light, lit by the Holy Spirit, at hand, passing it from one candle to the next, there is a frantic euphoria of happiness. On Holy Saturday our focus is on the Tomb of Christ. This is no ordinary grave. It is not a place of corruption, decay and defeat. It is life-giving, a source of power, victory and liberation. I encourage you to visit this Tomb and stand in solidarity with the Christian Palestinians. Do NOT deprive yourself of touching what Christ touched literally! I ask you this Easter and the next 50 days, to remember the Christian character of the Holy Land in your prayers, namely the Christian Palestinians, and our Holy Sites commemorating Jesus' earthly journey. Happy Easter. Peace, Rami Qumsieh, B.Eng. a concerned Catholic Palestinian from Bethlehem Please join us for a Pilgrimage Helpful Phone Numbers Life Center of Long Island: Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk: Child Abuse: Daytop: DAYTOP Brighter Tomorrows: The Retreat (Domestic Violence Hotline) Birthright: Seabury Barn: Catholic Charities (Food Stamp Info): Fidelis (Family Health Plus): Good Shepherd Hospice: Hope House Ministries: Alcoholics Anonymous 24-Hr Hotline: Suicide Prevention SUICIDE Marriage Encounter Retrouvaille D.R.V.C.
