4 September 4, 2011 The Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 Dear friends, earthquake (!) and hurricane. In one week we underwent both and as I write this (Monday August 29 th ) there are many of you without power, or even road access due to downed trees. If any thing, these events remind us of our place in the order of the physical universe and that, as our ancestors were, subject to the unexpected and even capricious elements of nature. vance. On a more usual note, let me ask you to be mindful of the Parish, specifically to 27 th was packed and I thanked you at that Mass for your devotion and loyalty. I certainly understand why so very few people were able to attend Mass on the next combine old-fashioned generosity and the new technology. I hope that the past weeks of summer have been of refreshment and enjoyment; and of course, that summer is NOT yet over; so let us enjoy the warm weather still before us. Also, may the graces of the Holy Spirit be with all who resume their education this week in whatever level of school you attend; as well as to all teachers! Father Hewes

Please join the millions worldwide who pray each day for the monthly prayer intentions of Pope Benedict XVI. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions as proposed by the Holy Father. Amen. Teachers. That all teachers may know how to communicate the love of truth and instill authentic moral and spiritual values. Church in Asia. God's power is doing infinitely more than we can ever ask or imagine, and we have become part of that great company of witnesses, the great river of history as Pope John Paul calls it, which began at the moment of God's creation and flows back to him, the source of all goodness and love. She is the mother of two grown children and grandmother to little 1-year old Kelsey. Donation: $50 (Lunch included) Call to register. Tabor Retreat Center, 60 Anchor Ave., Oceanside, NY Tabor Retreat Center, 60 Anchor Ave., Oceanside, NY DEALING WITH CANCER - A Woman's Retreat Saturday September 17, :30 am - 4 pm This retreat is for women who have experienced or are experiencing cancer. It explores how this challenging life event can be embraced as opportunity for growth. Jesus said, "I came that they may have life and have it to the full." How does Jesus keep this promise to women who face the spiritual, physical, and emotional challenge of cancer? How do we, in turn, embrace what Jesus promises and grow through this experience? Presenter: Sr. Helen Schmidt, CSJ in her own experience with cancer, discovered how sickness can be a genuine opportunity for growth and can lead to deep inner beauty and wholeness. When she was exposed to "energy work" in connection with her cancer, she recognized that the underlying principles were the same as those of her long years of spiritual journeying. She learned the gift was already in place since, as a religious woman, she had for so long worked at living those principles.
