Psalm Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own (Psalm 33). Second Reading Because of his faithful obedience to God s call, Abraham s descendants number as the stars (Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 [1-2, 8-12]). Gospel Keep watch and be prepared, for you do not know the day or the hour when the Son of Man will appear (Luke 12:32-48 [35-40]). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30,11:30 am, 1:30 pm (Misa en Español) 3:30 pm (New Time) WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am and 7:00 pm OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called father in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

3 THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today's responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain "Here am I, Lord." This "Here am I" is Jeremiah's great prophetic response to God's call. But today's story of Jeremiah and the refrain "Lord, come to my aid!" remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a "sneak preview" of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today's words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. LITURGY CORNER ESQUINA DE LITURGIA August 13-14, th, Sunday Ordinary Time As we follow Christ on our faith journey, we reflect: The gospel today shocks us with its bad news and good news proclamations. We hear of division, fire and unrest. There is seemingly no peace to be found. This however is NOT true. Jesus came to give peace to all, eternal life to each of us through his death and resurrection. To live faithfully in the midst of division and the unrest of the world around us, this brings us true inner peace. We live with both the bad news and the good news. How can you be a source of peace in your life, especially where there might be division and unrest? EVERY THURSDAY from 8:30 until 10:00 am in the Daily Chapel. [Jesus] endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. -- Hebrews 12:2

The virtue of mercy is being highlighted, in a special way, in 2016 by Pope Francis. His emphasis on the tenderness of mercy versus judgment and condemnation is a welcome relief to all men and women. In this series, we will consider mercy in a variety of ways: God, as the source of mercy; the seven spiritual works of mercy and the seven corporal works of mercy; and being merciful to oneself. Father Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest of the California Province. He has resided in the Vegas valley since He has been presenting parish missions, retreats, and evening series for over thirty years. He is the author of numerous books on spirituality and ethics. His newest book, Becoming a Person of Mercy, will be published by Twenty-Third Publications in July of Christ the King Fundraiser at Spanish Trail Golf Club Friday, October 7, 2016 at 8:00 am Come join your fellow parishioners and members of the community for some comradery and fun. 6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure noted that the official headgear of the pope, the tiara, has been set aside in favor of the miter. Although Pope Paul VI had a coronation in 1963 to begin his ministry as pope, he later gave his tiara away to the Catholics of the United States as a stimulus to end poverty. He took care to say that he was not abolishing the tradition of coronation, but his successor, Pope John Paul I, decided to have an inauguration to begin his tragically short term. His successors have chosen inauguration as well. Pope John Paul II felt that a return to the coronation custom would be inappropriate since the Church was mourning the sudden death of a man already nicknamed The Laughing Pope. So the end of coronations came about not because Paul VI gave the crown away. There are more than twenty tiaras on hand at the Vatican. One is used every year to crown the famous statue of St. Peter, whose sandaled foot has been eroded to a bright shine by the hands of millions of pilgrims. Today, it is left to the individual pope to decide whether he will begin his formal reign with a coronation or an inauguration. Pope Benedict chose an inauguration, as did Pope Francis. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus' teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen. A PROPHET'S LOT Jeremiah loved Jerusalem and its people. He spoke the word of God to them, that they might change their evil ways and return to the Lord with prayer and supplication for deliverance from their foes. The city of Jerusalem was under siege, threatened by famine and in dire straights. The king and the people believed, as false prophets told them, that because they inhabited the holy city and held the Ark of the Covenant, no one could conquer them, and that God would save them. Jeremiah told them the opposite. He said that if they did not turn back from their unfaithfulness, they would be conquered and destroyed, and the people taken into slavery. They did not want to hear this, and plotted against Jeremiah. But God saved him from their hands, and although they were conquered and taken into slavery in Babylon, Jeremiah went with them to their fate, ever the faithful prophet. THE GREATEST PROPHET Jesus tells the disciples what they do not expect to hear. He tells them that he has not come to bring peace, but division. He prophesies that people will be divided by the power of his words, families torn by disagreements. We are seeing the same in our own country and in our Church at the present time. Paul teaches that, surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, the saints, we should keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He endured the cross for the sake of believers, enduring its shame and pain for the sake of the reign of God. He endured opposition so that we might "not grow weary and lose heart." We have not resisted "to the point of shedding blood." So we must be brave, trust in Jesus to be telling us what we may be puzzled to hear, and walk in faith toward "the joy that [lies] before [us]."
