1 The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; ~ (702) ~ Fax: (702) July 3, 2016 ~ Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Readings First Reading Rejoice and be glad for I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of nations like an overflowing torrent (Isaiah 66:10-14c). Psalm Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66). Second Reading May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14-18). Gospel Jesus sends his disciples out in pairs to bring his peace and proclaim the kingdom of God (Luke 10:1-12, 17-20) [1-9]. MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30,11:30 am, 1:30 pm (Misa en Español) 4:00 pm WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am and 7:00 pm PEACE The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today s readings: peace is relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the L s power shall be known to his servants (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the peace and mercy on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with others. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Nevertheless, the Kingdom of God IS at hand! WE are the laborers WE are the workers called to proclaim the wonderful mercy, justice, love and peace of God to all. No matter if we are rejected or accepted, this is our missions, through our baptism. How do you proclaim the kingdom of God in your life? Are you proud to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ or do you shy away from showing your faith in action? SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT It is with great sadness that our parish has had to make a difficult change in our Funeral Ministry. Due to strict Federal and Nevada State Labor Laws, we are no longer able to sustain the Funeral Ministry as in the past due to the new directives that the Las Vegas Diocese has introduced to all parishes. All this fuss has to do with the way our coordinators, Presiders, and Musicians received stipends and not being officially on the payroll and clocking in. Unfortunately we are in no position to take on more employees under the new guide lines. Families or friends of a deceased person must choose a mortuary and work with a Funeral Director from that mortuary. Please do not call the parish first. The Funeral Director in turn will help the family with arrangements for a Priest/Deacon, arranging day and time with the parish, as well as coordinating with Christ the King Liturgy Department for musicians, readers and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. The Priest will be responsible for contacting the family for specific biographical information and choosing or not, the readings for the service. The parish has been beneficiated by a very generous anonymous donor to facilitate monitors throughout the main Sanctuary of the church. We will no longer need to use missalettes and music books, as all the responses, readings and music will now appear on monitors throughout the Sanctuary. We hope to have the new system operating by the middle of July.

Independence Day: Fun fact you may not know about July 4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, That may be the most extraordinary coincidence in all of history. On the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the declaration the two giants of the declaration both died. Jefferson died first. Adams was alive, of course, in Massachusetts. He didn't know that Jefferson had died but said, famously, perhaps apocryphally, that 'Jefferson still lives.' And people took that to mean his words will live forever. "The Mayor's Faith Initiative-Homeless Working Group needs your help with providing water and information on cooling stations to the homeless in our community. Continued exposure to extreme heat can have devastating effects on health, leading to conditions such as heat-stroke, dehydration, and death. We are asking faith houses and organizations to lead a hydration team this summer and provide water and Cooling Station information to the homeless in Southern Nevada. As a leader, faith houses will be asked to; 1. Help donate water, and/or store donated water from community sources such as Three Square Food Bank. 2. "Captain" a team of volunteers from your church and the outside community to drive the streets in your selected " hydration zone" on excessive heat days, and hand out cool water and information on nearby Cooling Stations. Cooling stations are community centers where the homeless can go for shelter from the extreme heat. 3. Please lead a Hydration Team to help save homeless lives this summer. The virtue of mercy is being highlighted, in a special way, in 2016 by Pope Francis. His emphasis on the tenderness of mercy versus judgment and condemnation is a welcome relief to all men and women. In this series, we will consider mercy in a variety of ways: God, as the source of mercy; the seven spiritual works of mercy and the seven corporal works of mercy; and being merciful to oneself. Father Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest of the California Province. He has resided in the Vegas valley since He has been presenting parish missions, retreats, and evening series for over thirty years. He is the author of numerous books on spirituality and ethics. His newest book, Becoming a Person of Mercy, will be published by Twenty-Third Publications in July of Christ the King Fundraiser at Spanish Trail Golf Club Friday, October 7, 2016 at 8:00 am Come join your fellow parishioners and members of the community for some comradery and fun. 6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some say tomato and some say tomahto you know the old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that we re having a baptism today, or maybe you say we are having a christening. The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of christening in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being Christ-ed. No matter what you call it, there s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ s presence poured upon the brow as we say, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you even though you may be squirming or sleeping are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more Christ-ed. No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today's readings celebrate God's providence. No matter how wonderful (or heartbreaking) our relationships are, God always provides for us. No one cares for us the way God does. Isaiah delights us with a deeply intimate image of God caring for us "as a mother comforts her child." The prophet describes us not as the usual "children of God," but as "babies." We should not resist this image, but rejoice in it. Trusting in God's care, we can all let down our guard and rest like infants in the lap of our mother. Saint Paul's trust in God allows him to be at peace like this. He boldly declares that no one can "make troubles" for him, because he has given himself completely to Jesus. And when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach and heal, he challenges them not to provide for themselves, but to let faith be their guide. NEVER ALONE Saint Paul reminds us today that he "bears the marks of Jesus" on his body. We recall another letter in which Paul describes his imprisonments and beatings: "Five times at the hands of the Jews I received forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I passed a night and a day on the deep" (2 Corinthians 11:24-25). Far from being bitter about all this abuse, Paul "boasts" in the cross that Jesus has allowed him to share. Those of us who have a scar usually have a memorable story about what caused the injury. Paul's scars remind him of his life in Christ. With the marks of Jesus on his body and the love of Christ in his heart, Paul is never alone. DEEPLY CONNECTED We are never alone, not really. We live in relationships, in community. That's the way we come into the world, after all, with a mother laboring to deliver us into the human community. God--being Father, Son, Holy Spirit--is a mysterious community who intends us to live in relationship with God and others, always and forever. Stories of abandonment or abuse affect us strongly precisely because we all know the deep human need to be embraced by a loving family. Our reading from Isaiah today describes God as a gentle mother, playing with us, her children, and comforting us. This same God who cares for us so intimately chose to enter our human family through Mary. Jesus, her son, grew strong in her care. And, as Luke tells us today, when the time came to spread his gospel message, Jesus insisted on community: he sent his disciples in pairs. The instructions Jesus gives his seventy-two missionaries reinforce the importance of community. Jesus wants his disciples to build healthy relationships wherever they go, wishing peace on new acquaintances, sharing gifts of healing and faith, and graciously accepting hospitality in whatever form it is offered. These practical tips still apply to us today, modern disciples of Jesus at work in the world. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
