Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Romans 8:8-17. Gospel Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 14:15-16, 23b-26. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You ll find no race of people left out; you ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the birthday of the church. In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today s second reading that all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit. When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit? LA PLENITUD DEL ESPÍRITU SANTO La Iglesia se despierta esta mañana con un asombroso mensaje. Mira a tu alrededor a ver quién ha sido llamado. Escucha las voces de los que proclaman que Jesús es el Señor. Encontrarás que ningún pueblo ni raza ha sido excluido; ningún idioma del mundo es incapaz de proclamar la gloria de Dios. Decimos que el Domingo de Pentecostés es el cumpleaños de la Iglesia. En diversas maneras, la Iglesia todavía está naciendo. Sólo cuando todos conozcan la paz que Jesús ofrece en el Evangelio de hoy es que de veras conoceremos la plenitud del Espíritu Santo. San Pablo nos asegura en la segunda lectura de hoy que a todos se nos ha dado a beber del mismo Espíritu. Cuando pasamos nuestra mirada por la Iglesia, deberíamos de ver a todos. Pero no es así. 3 A Word from Fr. Ray HAPPY PENTECOST AND BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH! Last Sunday was the celebration of the Ascension of Our Lord and we also celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was wonderful having Fr. Bob Stoeckig presiding and the excitement in the room was overwhelming. It was good seeing the smiling faces of our confirmandi at this wonderful celebration and thanking God that this year our AC was functioning and the nave of the church was comfortable. We had 49 candidates and one adult making their Confirmation, and congratulations go out to them for all their hard work. I also want to thank the parents and sponsors for making a commitment for their support as well. A big thank you also goes out to the leadership in the Faith Formation Department, which include Beth Thompson, Taylor Short, and Karly and all the of the support teams involved leading up to Confirmation. Thank you all for your kind words about my presentation concerning our parish finances and the ongoing projects. It s just nice to know that we are all working towards the same goals, and that makes all the difference in the world. Your loving support of the parish and administration is amazing. This solemnity is really about motivation, the reason why we listen to Jesus and choose to follow him. We followers of Jesus never stand alone. We have each other to motivate ourselves toward faithful action. But even more, we always have the Spirit who dwells within and among us and binds us into one... Living the Paschal mystery means that this good gift has its cost we still must die to ourselves in order to be the true Presence of Christ for others. (Living Liturgy, p. 134) What does Pentecost mean in your life? Are you conscious of the Holy Spirit working in and through you? CTK team prepares to leave for Cashman Center A big thank you to all 23 parishioners who made extra time in their schedules to represent Christ the King Catholic Community by attending the recent Nevadans for the Common Good convention. Fifteen CTK participants rode the bus, while 8 more met us at Cashman Center. It was a spirit-filled, educational evening for all, opened in prayer by Bishop Joseph Pepe. All are welcome to reflect on action going forward and lessons learned at a follow-up meeting on May 22 nd at 3:00 p.m. in Room 1 of the Activity Center. Information on registering will be sent in September. The virtue of mercy is being highlighted, in a special way, in 2016 by Pope Francis. His emphasis on the tenderness of mercy versus judgment and condemnation is a welcome relief to all men and women. In this series, we will consider mercy in a variety of ways: God, as the source of mercy; the seven spiritual works of mercy and the seven corporal works of mercy; and being merciful to oneself. Father Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest of the California Province. He has resided in the Vegas valley since He has been presenting parish missions, retreats, and evening series for over thirty years. He is the author of numerous books on spirituality and ethics. Pentecost Sunday Teach and Remind I'm not very good at telling jokes. I like them, but after I hear one and laugh at it, I let it go and forget it. I suspect this doesn't just apply to jokes. The Gospel today hints that the disciples may have had the same weakness when Jesus says the Spirit will "teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you" (John 14:26). Jesus spent three years teaching his disciples about the kingdom of God. While he may have condensed his message to "Love God... and love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:30-31), he spent most of his time showing them how much God loves them and how to love their neighbor. He used parables as examples and miracles as signs of the Father's love. He answered their questions and explained things privately. Knowing that this would still not be enough, he promised to send the Spirit after he had risen. He seems to have known that sometimes you just can't learn by listening. You have to experience some things to understand them. Sometimes you have to explain something to someone else before you understand it yourself. And that is what the disciples would do. When they received the Spirit after Jesus' resurrection, they began to talk about Jesus to anyone who would listen. They also began to do the things Jesus talked about. They fed the poor and healed the sick. Thus they began to experience Jesus in those around them. They would remember what Jesus had taught them and apply it in their lives. They even accepted suffering for their faith. We too can receive that promise from Jesus to have the Spirit teach and remind us. As we share our faith with others, we begin to experience Jesus in them. Just talking about our faith helps it to grow. As we listen to the Lord in prayer, we are reminded of passages in the Bible that we have read or heard from the altar on Sunday. We begin to understand how they apply in our lives. We may remember things that seemed to be very bad but turned out to be God's plan--maybe losing a job, only to find a better one; or moving away from friends, only to make new friends later. 6 Treasures from Our Tradition "Order" and "presbyter" are not everyday words in our vocabulary, since we think of order as a quality of life rather than a collective noun, and "priest" usually does just fine in everyday conversation. Yet each word has deep roots in our tradition. At an ordination we select men for service to the community. Ordo is a Latin word drawn not from pagan religious life but from Imperial Rome. It meant a distinct body standing apart from the people, such as a body of people responsible for civil governance, senators for example. Think of the selectmen or board of governors in your civic home, and you will get the idea. The church borrowed the term to describe the place of certain people within the people of God, thus the "order of deacons," "the order of presbyters," and even "the order of virgins, catechumens, widows, neophytes, penitents," and so on, as distinct groups within the church. Just as ancient Rome had various uniforms for the ranks and stations in civil life, so too did certain garments give clues to membership in an "order" in the church. So, our tradition favors the idea of an ordination liturgy not as receiving something so much as being received. This is clearly expressed in the liturgy. The "kiss of peace" is given only by the ordaining bishop and priests to the newly "ordained," not by the faithful, the deacons, or the concelebrating bishops who are present. Rev. Pentecost Sunday Two years ago, during Rome's quiet summer, Pope Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic persecutions and celebrated the Holy Spirit's "pentecostal work." Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God's children, the Holy Spirit creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit's gift "reconciled diversity." Pentecost's rich treasury of scriptural readings, for Saturday's vigil and Sunday's morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit's work from creation's beginning, through Jesus' resurrection, into the church's earliest days, now into our days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirit's gentle fire is ours to share generously, even with those most strikingly different from us. All hearts are Spiritwarmed by reconciled diversity. VIGIL READINGS ILLUSTRATE PENTECOST'S BIRTHING As Easter opened with a scripturally rich Vigil, Pentecost crowns Easter's "Great Fifty Days" by opening with a Vigil, whose Old Testament readings envision the Spirit's Pentecost creativity. Genesis shows Babel's language-unity disintegrating into scattered confusion. Pentecost's Spirit reconciles varying languages, creating faith's unity in diversity. Exodus shows people trembling as wind and fire accompany God's commands. Pentecost's tongues of fire come with wind, but no fear, gently empowering Apostles to proclaim Jesus' law of love. Ezekiel envisions the Spirit reuniting scattered bones, breathing new life, restoring them to the Promised Land. Pentecost's Spirit breathes life into scattered souls, gathering them into Jesus' new united faith community. Joel promises Spiritgiven dreams and visions to rescue God's chosen remnant. That Spirit, Paul declares, prays for us, in us; and Jesus invites us to drink deeply of that Spirit, whose living water, flowing through us, lovingly restores others to life. COME, HOLY SPIRIT! Reconciled diversity illumines Pentecost and fills this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Locked doors fly open as Pentecost's Spirit sends forth oncefrightened disciples to share Jesus' gospel in countless languages, uniting crowds of divergent--sometimes hostile--nationalities into one newborn community filled with peace. Paul exhorts the Corinthians, and us, to celebrate our differences, for gifts of the same Spirit build our diversity into Jesus' one body. Paul bids the Romans, and us, to embrace life bestowed by "the Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, 'Abba, Father!' " In today's traditional Gospel, Jesus sends forth previously frightened disciples, and us, to love others as Jesus loves us. So Pope Francis sees Pentecost's Spirit, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, summoning us afresh from past mediocrity and selfish isolation to share God's mercy enthusiastically and generously. The alternative Gospel declares keeping Jesus' commandments not a mindless obligation but a loving choice, closing Easter Time with Jesus' enduring promise of the Pentecost Spirit's abiding presence: that Spirit "will teach you everything and remind you of all I told you." Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Hoy celebramos la Pascua de Pentecostés. Esta es una de las tres Pascuas que celebramos los cristianos. Las otras dos son la Pascua de Resurrección (o Pascua Florida) y la Pascua del Nacimiento de Jesús. Estas tres solemnidades cristianas celebran tres momentos claves en el plan de salvación: la Encarnación del Verbo Divino (Jesús), su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección y el descenso de su Espíritu Santo sobre la Iglesia. Domingo de Pentecostés LAS LECTURAS DE LA VIGILIA ILUSTRAN EL NACIMIENTO DE PENTECOSTÉS El inicio de la Pascua comienza con una Vigilia rica en narraciones de las Escrituras; Pentecostés corona los "Gran Cincuentena Pascual" al iniciar la Vigilia de esta solemnidad con lecturas del Antiguo Testamento que imaginan la creatividad del Espíritu de Pentecostés. Through work, parents help to meet their needs and the needs of their children. They fulfill their roles as guardians and providers. While the need to work does take away from time spend as a family, it also offers the opportunity for parents to set and example of commitment to support the family and of working together with others to get a job accomplished. Children can also learn from work through the simple responsibilities of performing chores --feeding the pets, taking out the garbage, helping with the dishes, etc. They learn they are responsible for their own actions, how to be part of a team and the satisfaction that comes with labor well done. After praying together, consider the following weekly discussion question How is work--whether breadwinning employment, chores, or care--a daily expression of love in our family? Give an example. 2. Why do I work or do things for our family? How can I work more lovingly? 3. What are some common, simple and human virtues? What makes them true and authentic, or false and inauthentic? 4. Are there ways that work is a source of tension for our family? How can I resolve the tension and make my work more a source of joy and love for the rest of the family? 5. Modeling Jesus working with Joseph, how can I help others in our family with the ways they contribute, or let them know that what they do matters?

Elementary Registration for 2015/16 year Grades 1-5 in the Religious Ed Office M-TH 8-4:00 pm - Closed from 12-1:00 pm A BAPTISM CERTIFICATE is required for each child being registered. REQUIREMENTS: Family must be registered at Christ the King Family must be worshipping at Christ the King at our weekend liturgy Past due balances from the previous Religious Education year must be paid prior to registering When are classes held? Classes are held on Wednesdays at either 4:00 or 6:00 pm SACRAMENTS REQUIREMENTS: (1st Communion, Baptism) Same as for Religious Education Registration plus: Child is in second grade or above Child is enrolled in and attending weekly age-level Religious Education classes on a regular basis Unbaptized children must attend one full year of Religious Education first Our sacrament preparation is a family preparation process that requires the participation of the child and a parent or guardian in monthly sessions. Attendance at these sessions is mandatory. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!
