3 Liturgy Weekly Reflections Christ the King of the Universe November 24, 2013 If you are King... save yourself the soldiers jeered at Jesus on the cross. So did the rulers and one criminal crucified with Jesus taunt him about saving himself. But they misunderstood what save yourself means. The rulers, soldiers, and one criminal thought being saved meant that Jesus should come down from the cross, avoid any more suffering, certainly avoid death. But Jesus shows us through his words to the other criminal what being saved really means: you will be with me in Paradise. Salvation is less a matter of being saved from, than a matter of being saved for. What we are celebrating with this solemnity is not a style of government (earthly kings and kingdoms), but the victory of Christ over all things even death. Christ the King makes possible among us a reign of goodness, mercy, forgiveness, justice, reconciliation, peace. The good thief reached out to Jesus. How did Jesus respond? If you asked him to remember you in your struggles, how would he respond? Is anyone reaching out to you like the thief did? How about at work, at home, in your parish, in the local community, in the world community? If so, how will you heal their wounds and warm their hearts? ARCHDIOCESAN SIMBANG GABI COMMISSIONING. Saturday, December 14, 11:00 AM. Catholics from throughout the Archdiocese will gather in St. James Cathedral to begin the Advent novena of Masses in honor of Mary to prepare, in her company, for the celebration of Christmas. Archbishop Peter Sartain will preside at this Mass which includes the blessing and commissioning of Simbang Gabi coordinators from some 80 participating parishes in the archdiocese. This celebration points to Christ, Light of the World, symbolized by the parols (Christmas lanterns). All are invited and warmly welcome. St John s will no longer be celebrating Christmas Midnight Mass. Second Reading Romans 13:11-14 God has made us worthy to share the lot of the saints in light. Gospel Matthew 24:37-44 The Son of Man will come at an hour you least expect. As we listen to today s readings, it becomes clear that Advent must be a time of preparing for the coming of the Lord. Saint Paul tells us to wake from our sleep, and Jesus tells us that we must be prepared at all times, for the Son of Man will come when we do not expect him. How are we to be prepared? Isaiah has the answer: we must walk in the light of the Lord. They are the ones who are here one hour before Mass to set the Lord s table and make sure all is ready so the rest of us can worship. As Father mentioned this past weekend, Pope Francis has asked for a survey from all Catholics around the world. Father wants St. John to be involved in this historical survey. We will make the surveys available via hard copy and internet. Father has told us that the one from the United Kingdom is the most user friendly. We will have hardcopies of both U.K. and US. in the vestibule of the church and also in the parish office. Please note on either form what parish you are from and your city-state country. St. John Knights of Columbus again will have the Christmas tree sale for Noel House Homeless on Saturday December 7 th and Sunday December 8 th in the Church parking lot. Again this year CCS & the Noel House are short of money to do a lot of things needed and our help has made the Christmas party for the homeless ladies GREAT because of St John & the Greenwood community s support. If any of the 7 & 8 grade students from St John Parish would like to help, just show up. We will also have students from our High Schools because we can use all the help we can get. Noel House will have Christmas Cards for sale for $10.00 that go directly to the homeless. St John Knights of Columbus want to thank everybody for the great help in the past years. ( Just think if YOU did not have a home, car, food and the other things we have!!!! ) What a great way to share your thanksgiving to God.

Blessed Miguel Pro Feast day November 23 Born on January 13, 1891 in Guadalupe, Mexico. Miguelito, as his doting family called him, was, from an early age, intensely spiritual and equally intense in his mischievousness, frequently exasperating his family with his humor and practical jokes. As a child, he had a daring precociousness that sometimes went too far, tossing him into near-death accidents and illnesses. Miguel was particularly close to his older sister and after she entered a cloistered convent, he came to recognize his own vocation to the priesthood. Although he was popular with the senoritas and had prospects of a lucrative career managing his father's thriving business concerns, Miguel renounced everything for Christ his King and entered the Jesuit novitiate in El Llano, Michoacán in He studied in Mexico until 1914, when a tidal wave of anti-catholicism crashed down upon Mexico, forcing the novitiate to disband and flee to the United States, where Miguel and his brother seminarians trekked through Texas and New Mexico before arriving at the Jesuit house in Los Gatos, California. In 1915, Miguel was sent to a seminary in Spain, where he remained until 1924, when he went to Belgium for his ordination to the priesthood in Miguel suffered from a severe stomach problem and after three operations, when his health did not improve, his superiors, in 1926, allowed him to return to Mexico in spite of the grave religious persecution in that country. The churches were closed and priests went into hiding. Miguel spent the rest of his life in a secret ministry to the sturdy Mexican Catholics. In addition to fulfilling their spiritual needs, he also carried out the works of mercy by assisting the poor in Mexico City with their temporal needs. He adopted many interesting disguises in carrying out his secret ministry. He would come in the middle of the night dressed as a beggar to baptize infants, bless marriages and celebrate Mass. He would appear in jail dressed as a police officer to bring Holy Viaticum to condemned Catholics. When going to fashionable neighborhoods to procure for the poor, he would show up at the doorstep dressed as a fashionable businessman with a fresh flower on his lapel. His many exploits could rival those of the most daring spies. In all that he did, however, Fr. Pro remained obedient to his superiors and was filled with the joy of serving Christ, his King. Falsely accused in the bombing attempt on a former Mexican president, Miguel became a wanted man. Betrayed to the police, he was sentenced to death without the benefit of any legal process. On the day of his execution, Fr. Pro forgave his executioners, prayed, bravely refused the blindfold and died proclaiming, "Viva Cristo Rey", "Long live Christ the King!"
