3 Liturgy The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed November 2, 2014 All Souls (Commemoration of the Faithful Departed) God wills that all "have eternal life." While this gift is surely and freely given by God, it nonetheless requires something of us: belief in the Son. Rather than an intellectual consent, this belief is a consent of our self, of our will, of our life. Jesus will raise up on the "last day" those who come to him, who choose to be grasped by him, and who welcome the Life he gives. These are the faithful departed who rest in peace and whom we commemorate this day. Consent implies something more than words. Signing a contract means fulfilling its terms; marriage consent means a lifetime of fidelity; consent to undergo surgery means we place ourselves in the hands of the surgeon. Our consent or belief in Jesus means more than words: it transforms the way we live and relate, both in this life and in the next. What was the will of the one who sent Jesus, as mentioned in the Gospel of John? Was this a plan from all eternity? Jesus promised eternal life to everyone who believes in him. Do your deceased loved ones have eternal life? Do you think God sometimes gives us signs that they are safe? Have you ever received such a sign? Veterans Day Mass Tuesday November 11 th at 7pm. Come celebrate Veterans Day to honor our living and deceased friends and relatives who were or are serving in our armed forces. Everyone is encouraged to come and honor our service men and women and pray for peace around the world. Next weeks Readings November 9, 2014 First Reading Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12 Water flows through the temple. Psalm 46 The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High! Second Reading 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, We are God s building. Gospel John 2:13-22 Jesus will raise the temple in three days. Up until Jesus time, worship of God was associated with a place, the temple in Jerusalem. In today s Gospel, Jesus identifies himself as the temple, thus shifting the focus of our worship from a place to a person. It is well to remember this in a time of shifting demographics and reconfiguring parishes. As precious as our church buildings are to us, the Church is more than bricks and mortar. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted, all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. Calvary Cemetery: Chapel Mausoleum November 15 December 13 English 10:30 a.m th Ave NE Seattle Holyrood Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum November 8 December 6 English 10: NE 205th St Shoreline, For additional information please call Faye McClain, or fmcclain@mycatholiccemetery.org I will do more than give.. Saint of the Month Saint Joseph Moscati Feast: November 16 Virtue: Stewardship: Returning to God the first fruits of your time, talent, and treasure. In centuries past, when a ruler or other powerful leader had to be absent, the person appointed as steward exercised the power and authority to govern all the material possessions of the master. The greater the possessions of the owner, the greater the responsibility of the steward. Each of our lives-our very existence-is a gift from God. When we die, we must render an account to the Lord for all we have done with His gifts to us and return to the possession of the King the treasure we carry in earthen vessels. (2 Corinthians 4:7. Giuseppe Mario (Joseph) Moscati entered the world on the 12th of July, 1880, at Benevento, Italy, the son of a father who practiced law and served as a local judge and a mother whose family were members of the Italian nobility. Along with his parents and his eight brothers and sisters, young Joseph moved to Naples, Italy, and would spend much of the rest of his life in that area, becoming acquainted with two other Italians who would also be venerated for their holiness of life: Blessed Bartolo Longo and Saint Catarina Volpicelli. When his brother Alberto was seriously injured in a military accident, Joseph observed the excellent medical care he received and resolved to pursue medicine as his profession, receiving his MD from the University of Naples in A man of deep faith who took a private vow of chastity and attended Mass daily, Dr. Moscati quickly won a reputation as a dedicated and compassionate physician. He was instrumental in the successful evacuation of a hospital destroyed by a volcano, in researching and developing measures to halt the spread of cholera, and in being one of the first physicians in his area to use insulin in the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Moscati also directed a local school and received his license to teach clinical medicine. Saint Joseph Moscati saw his chief medical responsibility as contributing to the alleviation of suffering. Many times his ability to heal his patients involved their own faith and reception of the sacraments. He never charged the poor for his services, often tucking some money in the prescriptions he gave them. Miraculous cures were even attributed to his treatment of patients while he was still living, and after his sudden but peaceful death on April 12, 1927, prayers asking for his intercession were granted many times. Saint Joseph Moscati was canonized in 1987, after the mother of a young man cured of leukemia claimed a man in a white coat appeared in a dream to tell her that her son would live and then identified the man from a photograph as Dr. Joseph Moscati.
