3 April 5 th,2106 JAMBO Rafikis! HABARI from Father Crispin (news) I am away on retreat but I need to share some timely news with you before my return. First you will be excited to see that during your Spring Break from School, the 2 nd floor school windows project is now COMPLETE! ALL the South, West and East sides are now complete. Announcement - Bookkeeper part time ASANTE SANA to Lori Boyle, who helped us as a 24 hour a month bookkeeper, as well as working part time weekly at St Catherine s. Lori has left both St John s and St Catherine s for the private sector. ASANTE SANA Lori for your time here! KARIBU (Welcome) to Margaret Golliver. We are once again blessed to find Margaret Golliver, who did an accounting internship as a bookkeeper at Christ the King Parish last year. And very timely for us, Margaret became available right after Lori left. She has agreed to help us 20 hours per week here at St John s. We are doubly blessed because Margaret is already familiar with and trained in a lot of the procedures and reporting for an Archdiocesan Parish. KARIBU Margaret! Lastly I am disappointed to share with you, that over the Schools spring break, we did experience break-in to the Quigley House Building. Police reports have been made and the large safe has been moved to a more secure location while we work on improving security, both in the Quigley House and campus wide. I am saddened to let you know that they did steal a small wall safe. The thieves were able to carry it away. They also rummaged throughout Quigley House and while doing so broke five (5) of our locking file cabinets. We are advised that they appeared to be after quickly negotiable items. Unfortunately, any envelopes that arrived Tuesday (2/29) through Friday (3/1) last week would have been in the small safe when it was stolen. If you believe that your parish envelopes were mailed in or dropped off to the Parish office during that time - Please contact the Parish office to see if your contribution was posted. The police believe that these were professionals based on their activities, and items left behind, while in the building. A couple of things to consider: Please, please, please do not come on campus alone when it is dark. While they were after property, if they are confronted, there is no way to know how they will react. Know that I am going to reassemble our security task force from 2009, and I will be asking them to readdress our security in our current climate. On April 14 th at 7pm, there will be a community meeting at St John s in Egan Hall. A representative from the Seattle Police Department will be there to talk about the current goings on in our community. And will speak more about personal safety measures. Amani ya Yesu! (Peace of Jesus!) Padre Crispin

4 Liturgy Reflections April 17, 2016 year ABC 4th Sunday of Easter My sheep hear my voice. I give them eternal life The word of God is the gift of the everlasting life. The word of God is the love that calls forth life, that seeks out life. The Church is charged with the mission of speaking the word of God in every time and place. Everywhere we turn, we should hear the word of salvation, of love, compassion and life. And we should speak this word; we should echo it in our lives. What we know of this word of love and life we know because we have first been loved and called to life. Our response to this understanding is to give praise to God. In the church s constant prayer of praise, we hear the proclamation of love and life. In Christ we already share in the eternal life of God. Our experience of this union and life grows as we experience the love of Jesus and we praise him for his compassion, forgiveness and mercy. Prayer for Father Crispin on Good Shepherd Sunday O Jesus, our great High Priest, Hear our humble prayers on behalf of your priest, Father Crispin. Give him a deep faith, a bright and firm hope and a burning love which will ever increase in the course of his priestly life. In his loneliness, comfort him In his sorrows, strengthen him In his frustrations, point out to him that it is through suffering that the soul is purified, and show him that he is needed by the Church, he is needed by souls, he is needed for the work of redemption. O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your son who is close to you because of his priestly ordination, and because of the power which he has received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs him so much. Be his comfort, be his joy, be his strength, and especially help him to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy. Amen. Next Week s readings April 24, 2016 year Readings C 5th Sunday of Easter First Reading Acts 14:21-27 The missionaries Paul and Barnabas complete their journey. Psalm 145 I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. Second Reading Revelations 21:1-5a Like bride and groom, God pledges everlasting love. Gospel John 13:31-33a, Jesus followers live by a new commandment: love one another. Today s Easter scriptures paint a picture of God who loves us so much that the divine dwelling is now among us, with the human race. Jesus was the first physical manifestation of that new reality. As we listen to these sacred scriptures today, let us reflect on how God s dwelling is within each of us and how we manifest that to the world around us. 6 Dear St John volunteers: We have three volunteer opportunities coming up! We need your help to make First Communion a great experience for the children who will be celebrating the sacrament this Spring. 1. We need assistance with our St John tradition of bread making, on the evening of Monday, April 18th, between the hours of 5:30-8:30pm. No cooking experience necessary! You'll help the children as they make their own mini loaf of bread or assist with activities for those who are waiting for their bread to bake. 2. We need assistance to prepare Egan Hall for the First Communion receptions. Friday April 29th from 3-4pm we'll set up the space for the receptions that follow the First Communion Masses. This is a perfect task for those picking up children from school. 3. We need help to serve at the First Communion Receptions. Saturday April 30th for the 5pm mass and Sunday May 3rd for the 8:30am and 10:30am mass. My daughter, Arwen, will be coordinating the set-up. We need someone who knows how to use the coffee maker! SACRED HEART RADIO 1050 KBLE ~ Seattle Sunday Mass - 5:00 am, 9:00 am, Daily Mass - 5:00 am, 9:00 am Monday - Saturday Rosary - 1:00 pm, every afternoon 8:30 pm every night Chaplet of Divine Mercy: 1:30pm Sunday & Saturday Virtue of the Month: Obedience: saying yes to the loving will of God and those He has set over us. Authentic obedience guarantees us the freedom of living in the truth that our lives are guided and protected by the hand of our loving Father, who has a plan to bring everyone to salvation. We see His will in just laws, and in the lawful commands of those He has given authority. Obedience does not mean being forced to do things we don t want to do, and it certainly does not mean doing things that are sinful, just because a person in authority tells us to do it. Rather it means that we choose to want what God wants, in order to attain the freedom and joy of following Him. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850, Italy-1917, Chicago, Ill. ) Maria Francesca Cabrini was born into a large family of Italian farmers. Maria Francesca was born 2 months premature and remained small and frail during her life, but she nevertheless had a strong spirit and plenty of determination. Even from her earliest years, Maria Francesca had a great desire to serve Christ and was drawn to carry out this service as a missionary to China but God had other plans. Refused entrance into a religious order at age 18 because of her poor health, Maria Francesca instead taught for six years at girls orphanage and did so well that when it closed, the local bishop asked her to found a religious community, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to serve the poor in schools and hospitals. The new Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini (named for the great Jesuit saint to the Far East worked with zeal and determination, still intent on establishing her sisters in China. However, when she met with Pope Leo XIII, he told her Not to the East, but the West, and sent Mother Cabrini and her sisters to New York City to work with the many Italian immigrants who were suffering the effects of being poor strangers in a strange land. All the love and devotion Mother Cabrini intended to pour out on the people of China she now spent in service to the downtrodden immigrants in the United States, overseeing the founding of institutions to serve their spiritual and material needs. This required hospitals, not something that Mother Cabrini desired to include as part of the work of her sisters. However, the virtue of obedience to higher authorities once again played an important role. For after Mother Cabrini initially refused the request of the Archbishop of New York to establish a hospital, she had a dream in which she saw the Blessed Virgin Mary attending to the needs of the sick. When she asked her what she was doing, the Blessed Mother responded, I am doing the work you refuse to do. Mother Cabrini accepted the grace given through this vision and promptly opened a hospital in New York City. Mother and her sisters went on to establish other hospitals and institutions in Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California, Washington state, South America and her native Italy. Mother Cabrini became a citizen of the United States in Only 8 years later, while in Chicago she suffered her last illness. She died December 22, In 1946, she became the first American citizen to be canonized.
