3 Liturgy April 30, Year A Their eyes were opened and they recognized him. (Luke 24:31) Don t you wish you could have been there when Cleopas and his friend were walking to Emmaus? Wouldn t it have been exciting to hear Jesus interpreting the Scriptures and to see the look in their eyes when they recognized him in the breaking of the bread? Well, in a sense, we can be there. Even today, two thousand years after his resurrection, Jesus word can cause our hearts to burn and bring us to the place where we recognize him. How is this possible? Because the Scriptures do more than teach us about Jesus they reveal him to us! As many times as we hear the Scriptures read at Mass, it s good to be reminded that they aren t just words on a page. As St. Paul taught, they are living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). Inspired by God, they are filled with his presence. They have the Spirit s own power to bring us his wisdom, peace, and joy. All it takes is listening with faith. Cleopas and his friend had to walk a long way with Jesus before they recognized him, and sometimes we do too. So be patient with yourself. When you hear the Scriptures proclaimed at Mass, try to imagine that you are there in the middle of the action in Galilee, in Jerusalem, or wherever the story takes place. Imagine that you can hear Jesus speaking to you. Put aside distractions, and listen for what he may want to say to you personally. You may not hear anything right away. You may not hear anything at all! But that s okay because the Holy Spirit is still at work in you, just as he was working with the Emmaus disciples every step of their journey. He is always pouring out his grace, even when you can t feel it. All you have to do is try your best to keep an open heart. Over time, you will recognize him. Holy Spirit, help me to recognize Jesus in his word today. Lord, let your word touch my heart so that you can use me for your glory! In our first reading today, Peter has clearly taken on the role of shepherd, encouraging conversion and faith among his listeners. As we hear all these readings today, let us listen for God s invitation to follow the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, and to emulate him in leading others to growing faith as well. The Road Not Taken I expect you know Robert Frost s famous poem. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. It occurred to me recently that I know someone else who talked about roads more and less traveled. Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few. (Matthew 7:13-14) Do you want to walk the less traveled road? Choose the road that leads to life! Upcoming Summer Camps through St. John the Evangelist Three summer camps for various ages: VACATION BIBLE CAMP: Teachers from St. John School will host a Vacation Bible Camp this August from 9 AM to 2 PM at St. John School. St. John teachers will be presenting this opportunity to learn more about saints in Set sail with St. Patrick! Children 5 through 10 are welcome. The cost of this event will be $50 for each student. SKAGIT COUNTY MIGRANT CAMP: Middle school students going into grades 6 th through 8 th are welcome to apply to attend the migrant camp from August th. We are hoping to send 15 students to Burlington to work with the migrant community there. We will be joining Sacred Heart Parish in Bellevue, so a requirement for this camp is the willingness to attend two service projects prior to the camp. These will be in the summer. The cost for this camp is $225 for lodging and transportation. Scholarships are available. Parents will be needed to assist with the dinner meal. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CAMP: Current high school students going into junior and senior year will be welcome to travel to Yakima for the week of June to help build housing for low income residents. We will be working together and staying in a church building. The cost of this trip is $200 per person. Scholarships are available. Sheila Connolly will be one of the chaperones. Seeking to put God's love into action, we bring people together to build homes, community and hope. Come join St. John's as they embark on a weeklong excursion to sunny Yakima Valley to help Habitat for Humanity with a home build. This is an opportunity to experience the ultimate meaning of giving back as you work toward completing a home for a low-income family and learn firsthand what it takes to build a home.
