1 St. John the Evangelist Parish Seattle, Washington MISSION STATEMENT Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the people of St. John the Evangelist Parish are called to embrace the Church s mission of proclaiming the Good News of Salvation through Jesus Christ for all. Our witness to the presence of God and our reaching out to others allow us to deepen our relationship with God. We accomplish this through our worship together, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist; through ongoing faith development for all people of all ages and life situations; through the performance of good works; and through responsible stewardship by which we care for the gifts given to us by our God. 3 Liturgy Reflection ~ Ordinary Time 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2015 Today s Old testament reading features a widow and the prophet Elijah; today s Gospel a widow and Jesus, prophecy s fulfillment. Each exemplifies faith-filled trust in God s providence, leading to self-sacrificing love on behalf of others and prompting us to examine our own love of God and neighbor. Zarephath s impoverished widow risks survival to offer the foreign prophet Elijah, sworn enemy of her god and king, a hospitality she cannot afford. Elijah s risk is trusting God s promise that a destitute person in a hostile kingdom will provide for him. Chronologically, today s Gospel episode occurs just before Jesus passion, making the widow s unreserved giving of all she had, her whole livelihood a vivid foreshadowing of Jesus own imminent self-giving. Liturgically, November recalls Jesus glorious return for final judgment. As Hebrews declares, it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment. All three readings, therefore, declare Jesus challenge to every generation: However unfriendly the setting or unlikely the odds, undaunted faith and unfailing hope prompt faith-filled people to an unconditional charity that quietly gives what they cannot afford, their all, for God s glory and in service to others. Hebrews also pictures Jesus in the sanctuary of Heaven, interceding on our behalf. Thus, besides eschatological challenge, holy confidence resounds through Advent, and resonates in our living and dying: Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. Golden Fellowship Our next Luncheon will be December 3! All you have to bring is a food donation or paper sacks. Both will be appreciated by St. Vincent de Paul. The parish will provide the luncheon. We will meet in Quigley and grace will be said at noon! For those of you new to the parish, the Golden Fellowship is a group of parishioners, age 55 on up. For pot lucks just bring your favorite dish. Any questions, please call the parish office. *Barbara Madden s Rosary and Funeral will be November 14. Rosary at 9:30am and Mass at 10am- Christ the King parish. Please note that time of the rosary and mass have changed. All that knew Barbara are invited to participate in the celebration of her life. You can bring something for the reception at Christ the King or help serve. Next Week s readings 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 15, 2015 year Readings B First Reading Daniel 12:1-3 At that time your people shall escape. Psalm 16 You are my inheritance, O Lord! Second Reading Hebrews 10:11-14, 18 By one offering, Christ has made perfect forever those who are being consecrated. Gospel Mark 13:24-32 The Son of Man will gather his elect from the four winds. Scriptures that speak of events to come at the end of time are often referred to as apocalyptic. Today s first reading from Daniel falls into that category, and it uses apocalyptic language to speak of what were present-day realities for the author of that book and his audience. Likewise, Jesus in our Gospel passage calls our attention to the end of time to help us to think about our lives and our world in the present age. Listening to all these readings, what do you hear God saying to you about your life? All Souls November. At St John we commemorate this feast by praying for the souls of parishioners' departed loved ones throughout the month of November. Please take a moment to fill out an All Souls card with the names of your friends and family who have passed away. The cards are available in the pews and at each of the church entrances. You may put them in the collection basket at mass or turn them in to the parish office. During the month of November, Fr Crispin will lead the congregation in prayer for these souls, whose names will be kept in a basket on the altar. Invite your families, friends and children to participate in this most blessed Catholic tradition. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted, all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. Saint Therese of Lisieux-This month the virtue is humility. Humility is the true evaluation of ourselves with all our limitations. If we re truly humble, we ll admit our shortcomings, but we ll also recognize our God-given qualities and abilities. As we grow in self-knowledge and humility, we should desire to serve God and others in ways best suited for our talents. Humility urges us to do good for others without attracting attention or expecting applause; a realistic opinion of ourselves prompts us to give credit for gifts and successes to God. The secret to winning heaven? Losing our self-love in the virtue of humility. Whoever, therefore, shall humble himself as a little child will be greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:4) Saint Pius X once called Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face the greatest saint of modern times, even before she had been canonized. In 1997, Blessed John Paul II declared Saint Therese a Doctor of the Church for her teaching on spiritual theology, an honor given to only 34 other saints. Of herself, Saint Therese said, What beauty? I don t see my beauty at all; I see only the graces I ve received from God.. I m only a little seedling.. (Therese: her last conversations). How did a young girl from a middleclass family in the turn of the 19th century France attain the heights of holiness before dying of a long and painful illness when she was only 24 years old? Humility. In her short life, Saint Therese was none of those things usually associated with great saints; she was not a martyr, a missionary, an evangelist, a theologian or a foundress. She entered a Carmelite convent at the age of 15 and spent the next nine years in complete obscurity, doing all of the ordinary, daily things that convent life required. But from moment to moment, Saint Therese offered her weaknesses and limitations to God, accepted His will in all things, and persevered with child - like trust. One of her sayings was, Our Lord needs from us neither great deeds or profound thoughts. Neither intelligence nor talents. He cherishes simplicity. Both of Therese s parents, Louis and Zeilie Martin, were beatified in They were canonized this October on the 18th. All of Saint Therese s sisters also entered religious life. But there is no gene for sanctity, and in her youth, Therese was a very normal child, and even a spoiled one. The path to holiness walked by the Little Flower is open to anyone. Saint Therese knew that perfection means being what God wants us to be, and that is different for each one of us. Saint Therese, teach us your Little Way! Feast Day: October 1 Humility: accepting your limitations and God-given talents.
