3 JAMBO Rafikis! Please I need your help - there are many talks of not supporting the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). There are some things I would like you to know - No funds from the Annual Catholic Appeal are being used to support the Ref. 74 campaign. The Annual Catholic Appeal sends $50,000 a year to the National Religious Retirement Office to support our religious sisters in retirement. Congregations represented by LCWR with motherhouses in this archdiocese receive benfits from this ACA-supported fund The Annual Catholic Appeal funds over 60 ministries - the persons helped by these ministries are the ones who will suffer if you chose not to give And lastly - money that we do not raise through St John's collection for ACA has to be paid by the Parish. I am asking your help to support the persons who benefit from these 60+ ministries - they already suffer enough - let's not make it worse for them by choosing not to participate. Baraka ya Yesu! 4 Liturgy This Week s Readings ~ June 10, 2012 Body and Blood of Christ First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8 Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, For Mark, the Last Supper consciously recalls the Passover meal that celebrated God s leading the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt to their own country. In Jesus, a new covenant is formed between God and the people. Jesus uses the Passover symbols of blessing the bread and wine and passing them around. But he goes beyond this to claim the bread as his body and the wine as his blood. As the Letter to the Hebrews explains, Jesus shed his own blood to cleanse us from our sins. We come to worship the living God by heeding and doing everything God has called us to do. In the blood of the covenant, a new community is formed. The early Christians celebrated the Eucharist with joy. They anticipated the heavenly banquet they would share with Christ and each other. Speak of an experience form your life when you were willing to sacrifice for others as Jesus did for us. Indentify something that you are not able to sacrifice willingly. Recall a time when you prepared a special meal. What was the occasion? What were your feelings? June 17, 2012 ~ 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Ezekiel 17:22-24 Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 On each Sunday in Ordinary Time, the first reading from the Old Testament has been chosen to give us a deeper understanding of the Gospel. Today, Ezekiel sees God lifting up the lowly tree and making the withered tree bloom. So in the Gospel, Jesus encourages us with the promise that, as fragile seeds grow into an abundant harvest, and the tiny mustard seed into a hearty plant, so the kingdom of God will grow from small beginnings to an instrument of salvation for all. Our experience of God s trustworthiness thus far, says Saint Paul, should make us a people of undaunted courage and unshakable faith. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. We would like to expand our Ministry to the homebound. In addition to taking Communion to these people we would like to reach out with a phone call or greeting card to say hello and that we are thinking about them. We will also need volunteers. If you need a gluten free host please come back to the Sacristy before Mass and let the Sacristan know. If you have borrowed a pyx to take communion to a loved one, please remember to bring it back when it is not needed anymore. Also, if you have served as Eucharistic Minister or Lector and forgotten to take your cross off, please bring it back. We are running low. Thanks!

Peru Delegation Opportunity Are you interested in joining our next delegation to visit our Sister communities in Peru? Over the last 12 years about 40 members of St. John have visited our Sister Parish in Ilave, and the Orphanage and Sister School in Puno, Peru. During our Easter holidays in 2013, our next delegation will be visiting Peru. This has been a great experience for everyone who has made the trip. Children must be accompanied by a parent. Amigos de Peru will be holding an informational session about plans for our next delegation, on June 12 at 7pm in the School Library. Please join us. Stop by the Church vestibule to see our display. School News FINAL EVENTS Preschool students will enjoy an end-of-year picnic on school grounds, Thursday, June 14, beginning at 11:55am. Kindergarten graduation will take place on June 14 in Egan Hall beginning at 7pm. Fifty-one children will be moving up from kindergarten to first grade. The final assembly and prayer service will begin at 9am in Egan Hall, Friday, June 15. SUMMER HOURS The school office will be closed July 2 through August 3, Beginning August 6 the school office will be open between 9am and 3pm. Messages will be checked and calls returned periodically during the summer.

Saint Barnabas Feast Day: June 11 He was called Joseph at first. When he left his native island of Cyprus, he may have ad no idea what life held for him. Soon he became a Christian, perhaps on the day of Pentecost. He was welcomed into the Christian community and changed his name to Barnabas, which means son of encouragement. Barnabas sold his property and gave the money to the community in Jerusalem. Gradually other Christians came to see that Barnabas was a man of deep faith, filled with the Holy Spirit. It was Barnabas who introduced Paul to the apostles and encouraged everyone to accept him. Barnabas trusted Paul and took the risk of defending him. For a time, Barnabas and Paul were leaders in the Church at Antioch. When they returned to Jerusalem the Holy Spirit had plans for them. The Church leaders sent Barnabas and Paul out to do missionary work. This work took them to Cyprus and then on to Lystra in Asia Minor. In every place where they established a Christian community, Paul and Barnabas appointed leaders to guide the local church. Eventually the two of them separated. Barnabas took the disciple John Mark to Cyprus, while Paul set out on another missionary journey. Christian tradition says that Barnabas was martyred, and a handwritten copy of Matthew s Gospel was found clasped to his heart. Why is Barnabas called an apostle? He was not one of the first twelve chosen by Jesus, but he played an important part in the early Christian Church. Virtue: The courage of a martyr. You can still go online through PayPal, or Vanco.
