1 J O Y F U L N O I S E July 2014 ISSUE Jesus is making faith come alive in our lives.. Dear members and friends of Resurrection, What a wonderful Pentecost/ birthday celebration we had in June. Birthdays are always a time of renewal, joyous feelings and merriment and thus our celebration of the beginnings of Christianity and Resurrection, our little Church. Father Fred Crysler used the example of the wind or breath on your hair to help the little children and the big children as well understand the breath of God that is with us always. Sometimes we feel it clearly rustling your hair and other times we just know that it is there. So it is true of our daily lives, God is always with us during the toughest of challenges is when most of us clearly feel his presence and ask for His support and yet He is all around us always. As humans, it is during those troubled times we ask for His help, guidance sometimes forgetting to say thank you for the blessings we already so richly enjoy during the good or less challenged times of daily living. As imperfect as we may feel our country is, I believe it is a great country where you can still express your opinion, strive to make a living and worship God how you want. Let s be grateful for all we have been given but to strengthen our resolve and our focus to move forward as a Christian community in our great country. I continue to believe that Resurrection Episcopal Church is here at this place for a reason. Let us continue to remember that together we can bring the love of Jesus to those around us. 5 I think it is always a great idea to be thankful that we live in a country where differing opinions are welcome, different faiths are supported and economic independence is possible. Independence Day or the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain (now officially known as the United Kingdom). We associate the Fourth of July or Independence Day with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence proposed that June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress worked on the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, drafted by a Committee of Five, led by Thomas Jefferson, the principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. Little known facts include several remarkable coincidences, where both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. And although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third President in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. Although off by two days, Adams's prediction did come true. From the beginning we have celebrated our Independence Day on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress. Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration
