1 DCMBR 2017 TH SANCTUS BLL St. Bride s piscopal Church The word Advent comes to us from the Latin, Advents or, translated coming. The word refers to the liturgical season preceding Christmas when we prepare for Jesus birth and for his second coming as judge at the Last Day. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season (i.e, preparing for Jesus birth), it is also intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance, and dating are appropriate during this season. Advent is not as strict as Lent, there are no rules for fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-preparation. The purple color associated with Advent is also the color of penance. The faithful can fast during the first two weeks, in particular. The color of the Third Sunday of Advent is rose. This color symbolizes joy and represents the happiness we will experience when Jesus comes again. The Third Sunday is a day of anticipatory celebration. It is formerly called Gaudete Sunday; Gaudete means rejoice in Latin. (Think perhaps, of the joy of the shepherd when they heard the angels and responded by going to Bethlehem!) Finally, Sundays during Advent, just as during Lent, should not be given to fasting, but instead of celebration because we celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord every Sunday. And, by the way, this year the Fourth Sunday of Advent (December 24th) is also the Vigil of the Birth our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, known as Christmas ve! 2 Horatio s Corner Dear Friends, I had a wonderful Thanksgiving and now it s almost Christmas! I am trying to do my shopping early this year and am so looking forward to the Advent and Christmas music. It certainly was a pleasure to have Fr. Michael Godderz and Ruth back for a visit in October and to hear one of his sermons again. I was also very impressed with Fr. Thames and look forward to having him here again. I have been busy here in my quarters in the kitchen, trying to cleanup and get everything ready to start decking my halls little by little for all the Christmas festivities.
