OUR JUBILEE YEAR EVENING OF REFLECTION An Evening of Reflections on the Spiritual Works of Mercy will be presented here at St. John s....all part of our celebration of this Jubilee Year of Mercy. This 3-hour session will be held this Monday, May 16th from 6;00 PM - 9:00 PM and will be held in St. John School auditorium. It is presented by the Diocesan Liturgy Committee and will be led by Sr. Linda and Msgr. Mazur. The session will include reflection on a Gospel proclamation passage. The key portion of the evening will include two witness talks and a break-out session. Questions will be presented to stimulate discussions reflecting on mercy. After a short break, there will be two more witness talks and another break-out session. Finally there will be worship time with a short prayer service. Everyone is welcome to attend. This would be a good opportunity for our young people who have just received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Invite a friend and plan to join us for the evening. GIFT CARDS NEEDED FOR SUMMER FUN DAY BINGO Our Summer Fun Festival is now only about two months away. Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 17th! GIFT CARDS BINGO will be this year s main indoor activity. We are collecting Gift Cards of any amount, instead of actual prizes. Some popular kinds are : -Convenience Stores/Gas -Restaurants -Department Stores -Grocery Stores We have a Deposit Box set up in the back of the church. Feel free to drop off any donations when it is convenient! Donations of $10 and $20 denominations are helpful to divide prizes! Thank you with helping to make this another successful Festival. BINGO IS BACK... THE LAST DAY OF MAY The day after Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 31st, St. John s will hold a night of BINGO. Our doors open at 5:00 PM for food and games of chance. Regular Bingo games begin at 7:00 PM. The cost is still only $15 to play. Come and see what s on the menu and join us for an evening of Food, Fun and Fellowship! You might even go home a winner! BISHOP LEADS PRAYERS FOR HEALING Bishop Mark Bartchak will preside at a Prayer Service for Healing at Our Lady of Victory Parish in State College. It will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 7:00 PM. The Bishop invites all victims of abuse and their families, as well as the faithful of Altoona-Johnstown to join him and pray for those who have been harmed by someone in the church. The prayer service will include Evening Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a homily. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available. The Bishop will preside at two additional Healing Prayer Services prior to this one. They are as follows: St. Andrew Parish in Johnstown on Monday, May 16th at 7:00 PM and The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona on Thursday May 17th at 7:00 PM. FAITH DAY AT DELGROSSO S AMUSEMENT PARK Come! Join Catholics from across the Diocese to celebrate our faith and enjoy a day of rides & slides and America s best amusement park food! Faith Day at DelGrosso s Amusement Park in Tipton, PA is on Sunday, June 26th. Liturgy with Bishop Mark is at 3:00 PM and a picnic at the Diocesan Pavilion #2 is at 5:00 PM. All day Ride & Slide passes are available for a reduced price of $20 (a $29.95 value) with a Diocesan Faith Day Voucher. Tickets are also available for a picnic after Mass. This class is for all parents wanting to have their child baptized either here at St. John s or at St. Kateri. This class is a requirement of the diocese that all parents and hopefully, godparents, if they are local, will attend. SEWING GROUP MEETING Our Sewing Group, St. John s In Stitches will be meeting next Monday evening, May 23rd at 6:30 PM. Just an update on some of their recent projects: One of their members just completed remaking the beautiful, ornate robing for our church statue of The Infant of Prague. Many of the ladies have been working on making prayer shawls for gifts and knitting/crocheting a supply of new pink and blue baby afghans for each newly Baptized baby of our parish. The group is open to anyone interested in sewing, knitting, crocheting or working with crafts, etc. New members are always welcome and currently are especially in need of additional sew-ers. JOHN CHURCH GRADUATES BREAKFAST All of St. John Church s graduating seniors are invited to take part in a special Senior Breakfast held in their honor. It will be held immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass next Sunday, May 22nd in the St. John School Auditorium. This Buffet Breakfast is being served to our seniors by the members of our Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Rev. Patrick McArdle #448 and of our Bellefonte Knights of Columbus Council #1314. K OF C BREAKFAST SUPPORTS CUB SCOUT TROOP The Knights of Columbus will be serving their All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast from 8:30 AM until noon this Sunday, May 15th at their Council Hall on Stoney Batter. This month, Bellefonte Cub Scout Pack #35 will be helping the Knights serve the breakfast and The Knights will be donating their proceeds toward this local Scout Pack. Please come and enjoy a delicious meal prepared by the Knights members while also supporting our area Cub Scouts. The cost of this All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast is only $8.00 for adults; $4 for kids age 7-12; kids under age 7 eat FREE. The Breakfast menu includes these items: Bacon and eggs, sausage, potatoes, French toast, waffles, pancakes, sausage gravy, grits or oatmeal, hot syrup, peaches, coffee, tea, orange juice or hot chocolate. Blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes and over-easy or sunnyside eggs can also be ordered upon request. PLEASE NOTE: This will be the last Breakfast the Knights serve until they resume again in September. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CHILDREN S EVENT Kids in Grades 1 12, come and Learn to Treasure Hunt next Sunday, May 22nd from 2:00 4:00 PM. This is an event sponsored by the Bellefonte Knights of Columbus in partnership with Bald Eagle State Park. Join The Bald Eagle Park naturalist in learning how to use a GPS unit and to discover the intriguing world of geocaching! Young children may require the assistance of an adult to participate. Please note that this retreat is open to all registered Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in 5 th through 12th grades, their leaders and chaperones. You do not need to be Catholic to attend the retreat with your troop. Scouts may attend the retreat individually; however, they must have a parent attend to comply with BSA/GSUSA guidelines. This year's theme is Divine Mercy to coincide with the Pope's declaration as this being the Year of Mercy. The cost is $45 per scout. GOODBYES It is with sadness for our school, but excitement for Mrs. Mindy Stephens and her family, that we announce she will be leaving St. John School at the end of this school year to move to South Carolina. For the past five years, Mrs. Stephens has been a vital part of our school community as our 5 th grade teacher. Not only has she successfully prepared her students academically for their transition to middle school, she has sincerely loved each and every one of them for the unique individuals they are. She has had such a positive impact on our school and our students. The St. John School family will greatly miss Mrs. Stephens.
