1 St. Paul s Episcopal Church The Epistle May, 2015 Love God. Love others. Help others love God. We welcome you to join us on our journey as we strive to share the love of Jesus through worship, Christian education, fellowship and service to each other and the community beyond our walls. A Message from Your Rector In his book, People of the Way: Renewing Episcopal Identity, Dwight J. Zscheile makes a distinction between family and household. Many times we in the Church use the description that we are a family. I look at it that way as well. It gives us comfort to be one big happy family. We like the closeness and comfort that offers to us. Zscheile says it is very difficult to become a member of a family. One has to be born into it, married into it or adopted into it. Zscheile says, however, that the correct term should be household. In the household of God, no one can claim privilege of place; we are all adopted children via our baptism. It is God s household- not the household of one culture, tribe or ethnicity. We do not own or control it. In order to be fully God s household in a particular place, the church ought to reflect the diversity present there; this is integral to the church s mission of giving witness to Christ s reconciliation of the world. It sounds like we are splitting hairs over vocabulary. Maybe we don't like it because we know how hard it is to trust in God and let go of the control we want to have. We are called to look upon each other as equals, made in the image and likeness of God. Yet in the midst of it all we have to contend with jealousy, with comparing ourselves to one another. When we fully believe that we belong to this household, it takes that all away and we become one in unity and in Spirit, one in the Lord Jesus. If we look at the word community, unity is staring us in the face. It is then that we realize that we are one body an analogy used by St. Paul. Although there are different parts there is only one body, one Lord. Many the gifts, many the works, one in the Lord. We though individuals with varying gifts and talents are one body in the Lord. We rely on one another. We are called to look upon our similarities as opposed to our differences. We are called to learn from one another. In his Blessing for a Marriage, James Dillet Freeman writes; May you need one another, but not out of weakness. May you want one another, but not out of lack. May you entice one another, but not compel one another. May you embrace one another, but not out encircle one another. May you succeed in all important ways with one another, and not fail in the little graces. Great advice for the household of God. Fr. John Martinichio +
