6 Safe Church Training Tuesday, May 22 nd at 6:30 PM There will be a Safe Church Training held at St. Paul s on Tuesday, May 22 at 6:30 PM. Anyone who needs a renewal or needs Safe Church Training can attend this class. All Eucharistic Minsters, Eucharistic Visitors, teachers, and aides should be trained. The more trained, the safer we are. If you wonder if your certification is current, please call the office. To register please contact the office Fr. John+ Movin On Luncheon Monday, May 14 th, Noon The Movin On Lunch will be held on the 2 nd Monday of May. All widows and widowers are invited to share in this time of food and fellowship on Monday, May 14 th, at noon in Fellowship Hall. Christian Education News Parent Meeting Sunday, May 20 th On Sunday, May 20 th, there will be a parent meeting immediately following the 10:00 a.m. service about the Christian Education Program and Youth music Program. This is our annual bowling outing, so we will be serving pizza to our youth while the parents meet with Fr. John and Paula. After the meeting, we will go bowling to wrap up the Sunday School year until the fall. Please note: All are invited to go bowling with us; the church will cover the cost of bowling for the youth. 7 Memorial Service Sara Cushing Saturday, May 19, 1:00 P.M. There will be a memorial service for Sara Cushing on Saturday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul s. Fr. John will officiate. Sara was a longtime member of the choir before moving to South Carolina. Sara passed away on March 14, 2018 at the age of 67. All are invited to attend this celebration of Sara s life. Happy Mothers Day! Mother s Day Trivia You May (or may not) Know The concept of Mother s Day long predated Hallmark s desire to sell cards. The ancient Greeks paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, each spring. A little later in history, the English paid homage to mothers on Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of Mother s Day but it wasn t until a Miss Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia began a letter writing campaign to influential people did the idea gain traction. She was very close to her mother and devastated when she died. She felt that a Mother s Day would increase respect and love and strengthen family bonds. In 1907 Anna persuaded her mother s church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother s Day on the anniversary of her mother s death which was the second Sunday in May. In 1910 the governor of West Virginia recognized the first official Mother s Day. Oklahoma followed suit. By 1011 every state observed Mother s Day. In May of 1913 the House of Representatives adopted a resolution requesting that the President, Woodrow Wilson and all government officials wear a white carnation on Mother s Day. In 1914 Congress passed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother s Day.

The 2018 Mercy House Tony Del Nero Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday, June 2 nd Register now for the Tony Del Nero Memorial Golf Tournament to help benefit Mercy House. The tournament will be at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott on Saturday, June 2 nd, from 8AM to 10PM. There will be two flights one at 8AM and one at 1PM. Cost is $110 per person or $440 per team and includes skins, mulligans and food. There will also be additional contests such as: $10,000 Putting Contest, $4,000 Hole-in-One Contest, Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, Hit the Green, Yellow Ball Contest. 9 Feast of Pentecost! Wear Red!!! Sunday, May 20 Next Sunday, May 20, is the Feast of Pentecost, informally known as the Birthday of the Church as it was the occasion of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon all believers of Jesus Christ, Jews and Gentiles alike. The liturgical color of Pentecost is red, so all are encouraged to wear red to church on Sunday! All Things Theological! We will gather for prayer and discussion about a chapter in the book per meeting. The group will last 90 minutes. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 16 th at 10:30 AM. Fr. John+ EUCHARISTIC MINSITERS AND VISITORS: PRESENT AND NEW Licensing Requirement Tuesday, May 29 th at 6:30 PM All Eucharistic Ministers and Eucharistic Visitors need to have their licensed renewed in order to continue to function in your ministry. Fr. John will hold a class in order to have your license renewed. As you know the license comes from the Bishop and must be renewed every 5 years. We are due. On Tuesday, May 29 th at 6:30 PM there will be a meeting of all those who wish to continue in this ministry and anyone wishing to join. In order to be a Eucharistic Minister or Eucharistic Visitor must be confirmed in the Episcopal Church, have the approval of your Rector and have current Safe Church Training. Fr. John+

10 Acolyte Training & Pizza Party Sunday, June 3 rd Calling all current and interested Acolytes! We will have a training session and pizza party on Sunday, June 3 rd, after the 10:00 a.m. church service. Meet Father John and myself upstairs around the altar. To be an acolyte you need to be an adult or youth going into the fourth grade and have your parents support. This means that your parents need to make sure you are at church by 9:45 a.m. in time for you to vest and light the candles. All schedules will be snail mailed. Father John will walk through the service with us. We will also have time to eat pizza and have a question and answer period and robe selection. If you would like further information before the training, please talk to Father John or myself, or call me at or me at Ruthiek10@aol.com or text me at Ruthie Koerts Important Safety Meeting Tuesday, June 12 th at 5:30 PM On Tuesday, June 12 th, at 5:30 PM, Patrick J. Garey, the Village of Endicott Police Chief, will be here at St. Paul s for a presentation on Safety and Active Shooter Situations. I would expect all Ushers/Greeters and all of us to attend this important conversation, not only for our church community, but all the situations we find ourselves in. Pizza and salad will be served. Plan on attending. The meeting will last 90 minutes. The Vestry Meeting will follow.

11 A Note from Your Rector One of the responsibilities of the Vestry is to maintain our physical plant. During an inspection of the Christian Ed roof within the past month we have been informed that it is at the end of its life. The second roof was installed over the original roof in 1984, thus making it 33 years old. It has served us well. One of the factors contributing to its longevity is the slope of the roof. That being said the Vestry has approved the replacement of the roof by Binghamton Slag roofing for $38, This indicates a 4-8% saving in material. By resolution we have agreed to take the money from the Gould Fund with the intention of paying ourselves back. As you are aware with the slide in the stock market and removing the money for the roof, this takes more of a percentage out that we have tried to maintain. We have tried to maintain a withdrawal rate of 4% or less. We realize the Gould Fund is there for our use but at the same time we feel we must preserve the fund in order to maintain our parish s viability for the future. At the same time, we also found out that the Church Roof was installed in September 9, 1992, making it 25 years old. Once again, the help of its longevity is the slope of the roof. We our hoping to get a few more years out of the roof. Today s cost of replacing the roof is $43,981. The savings of $2, to do both roofs at the same time we feel is not prudent. Thus, we will postpone the Church roof. At the same time, we need to have a conversation about how we fund these projects. This conversation will include asking for donations to having a capital campaign. Bernice Gould was willing to share her bounty with us and we give thanks for her contribution but at the same time we know that the Gould Fund is the reason that we can be who we are and do what we can both for ourselves and others. 12 Roof Update Thank you to all who have responded to assist us in our roof repair project. So far, we have raised $9, Thank you for your financial support as well as your comments and suggestions about this project. All ideas are useful and helpful. It s Merry Mowing Time! The sun is shining (sometimes) and the rain is raining (often!) resulting in the grass growing! Mowers are needed to keep the grounds neat and tidy. A selfpropelled mower is in the shed; a calendar sign-up sheet is on the table in the back of the church. If it is convenient for your schedule, the ideal mowing days are Thursday through Saturday so the lawn looks nice for Sunday. All Saints Soup & Sandwich Saturdays All Saints Episcopal Church in Johnson City offers a community Soup and Sandwich lunch every Saturday. During the college school year many Binghamton University students help with this ministry but, of course, they are not around during the summer, creating a shortage of people to help with this ministry. All Saints has requested our help on the fourth Saturdays of the summer, beginning in May. These dates are: May 27, June 24, July 22 and August 26.
