1 Pastor Colin s Corner Vol.XXXVIII, Number 3 March 2019 Recently I led a workshop about worship for a number of church leaders in the Presbytery. As part of our conversation, these fine folks were asked what they most often felt at the end of a regular worship service in their community. The four options given were: 1: Completed 2: Comforted 3: Curious 4: Compelled Completed was understood to mean having done their good God thing. Church box checked. Task accomplished. Now on to the rest of the day. Comforted was understood to mean having had a heartening, supportive, calming experience that reassures them of God s love for them, their valued place in the community, and that all will be well. Not so afraid or lonely, they reenter the world. Curious is the experience of being interested, informed, and intrigued. Enthralled by possibilities, wanting to learn more. A desire to go deeper, explore, and understand more fully. Fascinated by God s story and what it might mean for our lives. Compelled is being captured by the Spirit and needing to respond. Something about your life needs to change and you are desiring to make it so. I will move in this direction to be more fully a disciple of Jesus Christ. I will care for these people to demonstrate the love of God. I will cease and desist from the sin in my life so that I can have life space for the Holy. I will come and follow You. These descriptions are not ranked as better or worse. They are simply intended to help us consider what really is happening for us when we gather. We may all, on any given Sunday, experience any one or more of the four. Still it is helpful to consider which is most common for us, as well as which we desire. I want to encourage you to consider two questions for yourself, and to then share if you are willing. The first question is: What do you expect and want from worship? I don t mean the elements of the service. I do mean the outcome of the experience for you. What do you hope will happen to your heart? The second question is: Which of these four experiences is most common for you here at FPCV?
