St. Paul s Episcopal Church The Epistle February, 2018 Love God. Love others. Help others love God. We welcome you to join us on our journey as we strive to share the love of Jesus through worship, Christian education, fellowship and service to each other and the community beyond our walls. From Your Rector What do we mean when we tell someone, blessings? Many time we wish each other blessings or we close our letters with it. Lindsay Gray, Editorial Director of the The Upper Room offers some suggestions to answer this question. We wonder if it is wishing good will, care, protection or to make their life easier. She has discovered that it is more complex than that. She points out that there are two different Greek words that are often translated as blessed. The verb eulogeo means to ask for God s special favor. The second word is makarios and is the word used in Matthew s Beatitudes and is translated as blessed or happy. As she points out this second word is not something that we possess or something that is bestowed upon us but something that we are. Eulogeo asks for God s favor; makarios tells us what our lives look like when we are favored by God. It seems that there are many examples that show what is important to God and how God views our world. Jesus uses many examples of who we are called to be by washing the feet of the disciples or having dinners for those who cannot repay. It is the joy of knowing God s happiness when we are hungry, thirsty, mourning or poor in spirit. We are being reminded that we are not alone. No matter what we experience in our life it is the God who created us that walks with us. We are blessed. Fr. John+ 1

Thank you to the Martinichio family: Barb, Samuel and Fr. John, for the delicious breakfast they provided after the New Year's Day service. Thank you to our Youth Group for preparing and hosting the December (New Year s Eve!) Trinity Canteen. Thank you to Linda Littell for her vacuuming and cleaning of the chairs in the Conference Room and Chapel. Thank you to Sindy Garey for reserving the pavilion through the Town of Union for our upcoming summer parish picnic. Thank you to all the hands who helped undecorate the church. Many hands made light work. Thank you to Lynn and Bill Freeman for coordinating our meatloaf dinner and the dedicated crew that worked with them. She can cook, and boy can we eat!!! Stewardship Thought On Sunday, February 11 th at the Annual Meeting we will be electing the men and women who will serve as members of our church s vestry to lead our parish. We are thankful for those members of our parish who, as a witness to their stewardship, have consented to stand for election. We here at St. Paul s appreciate the hard, faithful work of our vestry. They practice their stewardship with their time - they are in church every Sunday; their abilities - they serve the parish is many ways; and their money - everyone pledges and supports God s work through St. Paul s Church. Fr. John+ 2

It s time for the Souper Bowl Sunday, February 4 th Sunday, February 4 th is Super Bowl LII (52) but, here at St. Paul s we will be gearing up for Souper Bowl VI (6)! Bring a can of chunky soup (or $1 to buy a vote) and vote for either the Eagles or the Patriots or vote for St. Paul s CHOW pantry. Either way, you will come away a winner! Mark your calendars for the Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 11th. We will have one combined service at 9:00AM with the meeting afterwards. Please bring a covered dish as we will first share a meal together then get to the business of the church. The election of three vestry members and one warden will take place at this time. A vestry member s term is three years; the term for a warden is two years. Not only is the vestry the governing body of the church but it is charged with helping to discern the vision toward which God is drawing St. Paul s, making it a very important ministry in the life of the church. Note: The qualifications for voting as set forth in the by-laws of the parish say Each member, eighteen (18) years of age or older and a communicant in good standing for one calendar year shall be entitled to one vote on each matter submitted to a vote at a meeting of the members. (Section 5:05) In order to run for an elected office the by-laws say No person may serve as a Vestry member, unless that person is baptized, at least eighteen (18) years of age, a communicant in good standing of the Parish for one calendar year, and has been a regular financial contributor of record before the election or Vestry appointment takes place. 6 Movin On Luncheon Monday, February 12 th, Noon NOTE: The Movin On Lunch will be held on the 2 nd Monday of February, February 12. All widows and widowers are invited to share in this time of food and fellowship on Monday, February 12 th, at noon in Fellowship Hall. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Tuesday, February 13 th, 6 PM As is tradition at St. Paul s we will be holding a Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 13. This is a longstanding tradition in the church as a way to use up heavy, fatty foods before the Lenten Season begins. All are welcome to join us. Bring a friend or two. A free will offering will be taken. SHROVE TUESDAY-Then and Now The word shrove comes from the verb to shrive (to confess and receive absolution) and refers to going to confession at the beginning of Lent. The day before Ash Wednesday is Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Fat Tuesday. Centuries ago Christians often stuffed themselves with food before beginning 40 days of fasting for Lent. In those days, many Christians used up all the food containing fat, including dairy products. Because so many foods, including pancakes, used those fat products, many churches had huge feasts. A lot of people ate until they could hold no more - the beginning of all you can eat dinners. Today many congregations still keep at least a semblance of the tradition. In communities around the world, churches serve pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. But today the purpose is to have Christian fellowship, not to devour everything in sight. CPR/AED/First Aid Training The Vestry has approved the purchase of an AED (defibrillator) for the Church. In order to purchase this equipment, we must have people trained in its use. We are offering a class on Saturday, March 17 th from 9 AM to 4 PM, here at the church. This class will include CPR/AED training for adults and pediatrics as well as Emergency First Aid. The class size is limited to 20 people. To be certified you must be physically able to get down on the floor. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of the Church for the class. Lunch will be provided and there is no charge for the class. If you are already certified would you let Fr. John know. 6

GUIDELINES FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE DURING LENT Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by those who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Fast and Abstinence: in addition to abstinence, fasting is observed by those between the ages of (inclusive). On days of fasting one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal one full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Ash Wednesday Wednesday, February 14 PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN SCHEDULE! Ashes will be distributed during the following services on Ash Wednesday, February 14: 7:00 AM in the Chapel, 9:30 AM in the Church, 5:30 PM in the Church. Lessons & Carols Sunday, February 18 th, 10 AM Although we normally associate the term "carol" with the season of Christmas, a "carol" is in fact any hymn, song, or anthem which is specific to a season of the church; in this case, the season of Lent and the story of the Passion of Jesus. This historic service tells the story in seven short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of carols, hymns, and anthems. This year the service will take place during the 10 AM service on February 18 th. If you are interested in reading, please sign up in the back of the church. 7

Lenten Program This year s Lenten Program will feature guest speakers on Science and Religion. The time frame has changed a bit from last year. The office will be closed on Monday, February 19 th for Presidents Day. Balloon Sculpting Class February 20 th & 21 st Did you ever wonder how to do balloon sculpting? 9 Cooks Needed! Do you have a favorite soup you like to make? An easy casserole? We are looking for a few folks to provide a simple supper for our Lenten series. Figure on about 35 people, a free will offering will be taken to cover the cost of the groceries. Speak with Fr. John or Jennifer Westermann if you would like to assist with our own Feeding of the Five Thousand. Makes 35 sound easy now, doesn t it? There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the back of Church. Volunteer Help Needed We are in need of a volunteer for the CHOW Pantry on the second Thursday of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. If you can help, please let me know. Thank you for your continuous support! Women of the Church Let s have a baby shower! Best of all, you don t have to wrap the gift or play shower games, but you will be helping new mothers care for their babies. On February 16 th the WoC will meet in the undercroft at 1:00 p.m. where we will be joined by our guest speaker, Michelle Brown from the Life Choices Center of Binghamton. LCC provides factual information to women facing unwanted pregnancy, educates and empowers teens and women to make positive choices for a healthy/safe lifestyle, teaches parenting and child care skills, and has a Baby Shop where their clients may use credits earned by attending various parenting classes to purchase items for their babies. The items in the baby shop are totally obtained through donations and our baby shower gifts will be a wonderful way of helping these new mothers. The organization also accepts clean, well-kept maternity clothing in all sizes for mothers-to-be. Michelle is a very energetic and compassionate person who is eager to share with us the many services LCC provides to women. I am sure you will enjoy meeting her and hearing her message. Coffee, tea and light refreshments of snacks and dessert will be provided. A signup sheet will be placed at the back of the church. We will need 4 or 5 people to provide a snack or a dessert for this meeting. A box will be placed at the back of the church for baby shower gifts which can be brought in any time up to the meeting. Watch your s for further information. 9

The Sleeping Bag workshops continue to be held on the 2 nd Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the undercroft as the ladies work diligently to create more sleeping bags to replace those donated late last year. More hands make lighter work, so feel free to join in. There are usually some great homemade cookies and there is always wonderful conversation. Coming Activities: I am still hoping to have a speaker from Truth Pharm at out March 12 th meeting, however, as yet I have not been able to connect with anyone other than a voice mail. I will continue to work on this. Our rummage sale is April 14 th so we know the week prior to that will be very busy. Please note that thanks to Sindy Garey and her team of workers, we now have 89 large garbage bags of very nice clothing from Vintageness for our sale. Again, thank you to all who made this possible. A look into the rummage room and the overflow room makes it evident that we will have a huge sale this spring. Following a week of hard work, we need to relax, so mark your calendars for a WoC luncheon at a local restaurant on April 18 th. I would like to thank all who set up, cleaned up and prepared food, as well as those who attended our Sunday at the Movies in January. It was well received and a great way to avoid the cold January temperatures. Thanks also to all who helped with the January 24 th speaker meeting where we learned much about the Children s Home in Binghamton. Sandy Schwab, Chairperson Why go Red? National Wear RED Day Friday, February 2nd Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. That s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 2, 2018, and encourage others to do the same. Also, make time to Know Your Numbers. Five numbers that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare providers determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. Wear red. On National Wear Red Day, be sure to wear something red to show your support for women with heart disease and strokes. 10

Vestry Biographies Listed below are the candidates for this year s Vestry. Sindy Garey Although born in the US I was raised and educated in Quebec, Canada with my spiritual background through the Anglican/Church of Canada. My family two brothers, sisters-in-law; two nieces, two nephews, two grand-nephews and a grand-niece remain in Canada living just outside of Montreal. Looking for an Episcopalian Church locally I was blessed to find St. Paul s where I was welcomed with an amazing amount of warmth, friendship and kindness. Walking into St. Paul s each Sunday provides me with a sense of peace and joy I haven t found anywhere else. I felt comfortable diving into service to the church and local community through St. Paul s including co-chairing (with Louisa Ivans) the summer picnic, volunteering on Sundays to stock shelves for the CHOW pantry, and organizing the Vintageness clothing pick-up this December for our rummage sale. I also have the pleasure of being on the lawn-mowing calendar during mowing season, as well as volunteering to assist with the fall and spring clean-ups, the icecream social and rummage sales, and can often be found doing the dishes or helping to set up or clean-up for various events. I have the pleasure of attending as many special services, events and social occasions at St. Paul s as possible. Although I still work full time (I am the Executive Director of two not-for-profit entities, the Broome County Bar Association and its sister corp. the Broome County Bar Foundation) and have a lengthy and varied community service background - my spiritual life is a priority. It would be an honor and a privilege to serve on St. Paul s Vestry. Linda M. Littell Born in Elmira, NY nearly 75 years ago in St. Joseph's Catholic Hospital...Baptized in the local Presbyterian church...brought up in the Methodist church until 18 Received and Confirmed in the Episcopal church, Hammondsport, NY at 19 With my husband John, I've travelled the USA by car, van and tow behind trailer...i've taught Touch for Health classes...i've worked and lived with the Hassidic Jewish community in Monroe, NY...baked bread at Shiloh farms in Arkansas...learned Meditation, Intuitive and Polarity therapies at Heartwood College in Garberville, Ca...and lived and enjoyed a wonderful Christfilled experience at Unity Village Lee's Summit, Mo.~ Learning about Divine Order, Contemplative prayer, and Speaking the Word...I practice many types of religion...my home base since the 1970's is here at St. Paul's (I'm not sure I am a member) where I pledge my time, my treasure, and my dust cloth...what has all this to do with being a Vestry member? NOTHING I'm not even sure if I am following the Lord's leading...i feel very fragile since John's passing last March, but I said that I would serve, if no one stepped up to the opening on the Vestry...So o o o, I will do my best to do a good and God-filled job. 12

Deborah (Reed) Wirag I grew up in the parish of St. Paul. As a child, I sang in the children s choir under the direction of Mr. Gillespie. I was confirmed and married by Father Entwistle. After marriage in 1973, I lived in Connecticut, New Jersey, and Texas until 2015 when I retired from teaching Junior High public school and we relocated back to Endicott. I am currently an active member of the following ministries: Altar Guild, Sleeping Bag Workshop, Sunday School, and Vestry (since August 2017 temporarily filling a Vestry vacancy). Karen Cahill For thirty-five years I have been blessed to be a member of our St. Paul s Parish. I have laughed, cried, hugged, and mourned with so many of you during this time as you have done with me. I have taught Sunday School and Bible studies, attended book discussions that have challenged my faith, am serving on Altar Guild and currently serve on our Vestry. My greatest blessing has been singing with our choir for so many years and greatest joy, being privileged to play for our congregation while our music director is on vacation and on other occasions. You have risen to each occasion singing very well with the evangelistic style of piano music, so different from the beauty of the organ. Now I hope to serve again on the Vestry and will do my best to assist with the decisions the Vestry must make to keep our parish running smoothly and in order. Jennifer S. Westermann St. Paul s has been my church home since 1984 and is where my husband, Jack, and I raised our three children. In the course of the past 30+ years here I have served in various ministries within the church including teaching Sunday School and serving terms on the Vestry and currently serve as a warden. I am a Lay Assistant, a Eucharistic Visitor, in the Altar Guild and the Handbell Choir and chair the Christian Education Commission. I have continued involvement with the Women of the Church, the Movin On lunches, ushering at 8:00, the Trinity Canteen lunches, and assisting Paula with the two youth bell choirs. I would love to have the opportunity to once again work for the church in this capacity as well as for the people of St. Paul s. 13

St. Paul s Episcopal Church Vestry Minutes, December 12, 2017 To love God, Love others, Help Others to love God Rector: Fr. John R. Martinichio Wardens: Bruce Dailey (A), Jennifer S. Westermann Vestry: Eunice Barton Lynda Helmer Ruthie Koerts Karen Cahill Marge Johns (A) Robert Pettit Deborah Wirag Chip Kinne (A) Richard Schwab Treasurer: Jack Westermann Fr. John opened the meeting at 7:02 p.m. with a group reflection on Luke 10:1-12. November Minutes - Motion made by Ruthie Koerts with second from Bob Pettit to accept the November minutes. Motion carried unanimously. Financial Reports Bob Pettit Gould Report the Gould fund balance at end of November was $4,698,409. (plus, the monthly draw of $14,250) for a total gain of about $115,000. Pledges about $11,000 under year to date Income/Expenses $3,787 more income than spent but only because of extra $20K withdrawal from Gould Fund to cover expenses. Some pledges are still out. Jack: CHOW/CHAP financials CHOW donations higher than expenses for month of November $757 for CHOW and $614 for CHAP. Flowers and Memorials through November expenses were about $1,600 more than contributions. About $8,000 was carried over from 2016 so while this account is not overdrawn eventually it will be if this becomes a trend. Closed November with a little more than we closed October so picked up a little, probably will not pick up the $11,000 we are down in pledges. Audit Results are back from the auditors, Viera and Associates, CPA s. Items of interest: Four outstanding checks that have not been reversed. That will be done. Didn t like credit card documentation. That was resolved before this meeting. They would have liked to have seen a letter with all Gould scholarships granted, documenting that checks written to individuals were for scholarships, not just personal checks. This is easily rectified. Based on their assessment our finances are in line with what Church Windows and our checking account says so all in all the vestry felt we are doing a pretty good job with the church s finances. Motion made by Lynda Helmer with second from Dick Schwab to accept the audit report. Motion carried unanimously. Fr. John: 80 pledge cards have been returned for a total of $132,900. Motion made by Ruthie Koerts with second from Dick Schwab to accept financial reports as presented. Motion carried unanimously with one abstention, Bob Pettit. 15

Budget Bob presented fourth proposal. Big item is that it is not a balanced budget; $1,417 more in projected expenses than projected income. Motion made by Lynda Helmer with second from Deborah Wirag from to accept 2018 budget as proposed. Motion carried unanimously. Consent Agenda Housing allowance Motion made by Dick Schwab with second from Ruthie Koerts to accept Fr. John s housing allowance proposal. Motion carried unanimously. Nominating Committee Outgoing vestry members: Warden Jennifer S. Westermann, vestry members Eunice Barton, Karen Cahill, Lynda Helmer and Deborah Wirag. Nominating Committee Chair is outgoing warden, Jennifer S. Westermann. Nominating Committee will be Jennifer S. Westermann and Karen Cahill from vestry. Fr. John will look for one person from congregation. Motion to accept nominating committee made by Ruthie Koerts with second from Eunice Barton. Motion carried unanimously. Items for Discussion Annual Meeting vestry responsibility to plan and execute it Safety committee? See Packet AED discussion Discussion on whether we should get one for the church and who gets trained on it through CPR training. Fr. John will do some more research into this. Altar linens/purificators Fr. John will talk to Chip Kinne about using Memorial Fund money to buy new altar linens and purificators. Gould Grants Motion made by Ruthie Koerts with second from Karen Cahill to approve Gould Grant application made by the Sowwy Foundation for $1,500. Motion carried unanimously. Warden s Report A thank you was received from the American Civic Association for a Gould grant. A thank you was received from Margie Britton s family for facilitating the procural of a new ciborium in Margie s name. Committee Reports Youth Group The group has committed to hosting the next Trinity Canteen which will be December 31. Fr. John, Barb and Bruce Dailey and Jennifer are currently the adults overseeing the group. College Students Possibly invite them for a get-together during their winter break. Property Committee Items to address: various light bulbs need to be replaced and another light will be installed in the sanctuary over the piano. One furnace stopped working on Sunday so it was only about 65 degrees in the church. Petcosky came on Monday and fixed it. Waiting for bill. Social Committee The Shack was shown on December 9th with 8 people in attendance. 16
