1 St. Paul s Episcopal Church The Epistle February 2019 Love God. Love others. Help others love God. We welcome you to join us on our journey as we strive to share the love of Jesus through worship, Christian education, fellowship and service to each other and the community beyond our walls. From Your Rector During the month of February in our Liturgical Calendar, we are in the weeks following the Epiphany. Like of all the Seasons of the Church, we are given time to reflect on the Feast of the Season, in this case, the Epiphany. We all know the story of the Epiphany - the visitation of the astrologers to the baby Jesus. These men bring their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn infant. The particulars of the story are not what is important in the event. Were there three or not? We do know that they were not kings but learned men who studied the stars. By their studying the realized that this event had taken place and make the journey to see the event that had taken place. How long did it take them? Where did they come from? Why did Herod summon them? Lots of questions and not many answers. The Bible is not a history book, there are few historical facts; we need to remember that when it comes to faith and morals - there are no errors. We consider the Bible to be the inspired Word of God as relayed to us by those who have experienced God. The Bible is about God s covenant with His people and how we struggle through all of history to live up to that covenant. Even when we are unfaithful, our God is faithful. He does not abandon us. He is ever present in our daily routine and we must seek Him like those men who sought Jesus. Our journey is long and has its ups and downs, its good and bad, happy and sad, easy and difficult, strengths and weaknesses, but like those wise men on a journey we do not give up. At times, we might lose our way and need some recalculating as our God gently guides us back on course, so we continue to walk the Way. Every person who has walked the Way before us has had the same experience as we have and they show us what it means to be the beloved child of God. They were like us and wavered as they walked, and God showed them mercy and justice. God equipped them with gifts, not just one gift but several gifts that we are to use for the building up of His Kingdom. We, like the early astrologers, are to manifest Him to the world. How we manifest Him to the world, is how we use our God-given gifts. Our identity is being this beloved child - everything we do must flow from that with a sense of gratitude in our hearts. Our prayers rise like incense before our God. We give thanks and praise to Him when we are grateful stewards of those gifts he has given us. We might not bring gold, frankincense and myrrh but we bring who we are and offer ourselves to the praise and glory of His name. Father John+ 1

They wish you a blessed holiday and a peaceful New Year! 2
3 A Stewardship Thought None of us is getting any younger, as the saying goes. We are aging every day, and some of us will spend our last days not in our own home. Because we here at St. Paul s want to reach out to our members who are unable to be with us each Sunday, we visit, bring them flowers and bring Holy Communion to church members and nonmembers alike. This reaching out to help change our world is part of our vision, supported by your faithful stewardship. Your personal stewardship and our vision to worship and serve in Jesus name, enable me and others to be sent there. Thank you for your generous offerings and the gifts that make all of this possible. Please remember that as we are not notified of admission to Health Care Facilities please inform the office of such admissions. Institutions may not release information over the phone. Fr. John+ Rector s Forum During the month of February, the Rector s Forum will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 3, 17, and 24. There is no forum on February 10 th due to the Annual Meeting. John+ Reception, Confirmation, Reaffirmation Anyone interested in being Received into the Episcopal Church, becoming a Confirmed member or having their Baptism vows reaffirmed is asked to speak to Fr. John. Bishop DeDe will be here at St. Paul's on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 for Reception, Confirmation and Reaffirmation. There needs to be a time of preparation and plans are being made to hold such a class. In the Episcopal Church you need to be a confirmed member in order to be a Eucharistic Minister, Eucharistic Visitor, Worship Leader or Warden. Outside of the "legal aspect" many feel that it is a step where one makes their faith their own. If you have questions or are interested, please see Fr. John. Why do you plant a tree that will not bear fruit for 70years? I plant for the children who will come after me. -from Jewish Teaching, Ta nit23a A simple way to continue your support of St. Paul s Church is to designate the church as a beneficiary in your will. Your gift will help ensure that efforts of the church will be maintained. We continue to follow our mission statement of: We welcome you to join us on our journey as we strive to share the love of Jesus through worship, Christian education, fellowship and service to each other and the community beyond our walls. By including St. Paul s in your will, the fruit tree planted today will bear fruit for generations to come. Fr. John+ Bible Study Thursdays, 9:00 A.M. 10 CHOW Pantry As a result of a meeting with the CHOW Warehouse and Broome County Council of Churches, the following changes have been made: Deliveries will be the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. This month s deliveries will be on February 14 th and 28 th at 10:00 a.m. Food purchases for the Pantry will only be made through the Buyers Club co-op. We will continue to collect donations of food and cash to support the CHOW Pantry. These changes should increase the amount of food available to our Pantry and reduce our expenses. These changes reflect an ongoing effort to be good stewards of our bounty and ensure the future of the CHOW Program at St. Paul s. Thank you for your continued support. Mary Cermak As we have announced previously, the CHOW Pantry has gone through some changes in how we operate as a pantry. The Wardens, Mary Cermak and I met with the representatives of the Broome County Council of Churches and the CHOW warehouse to see what could be done about the shortage of food they deliver to our pantry. From this meeting we have entered into a six-month trial period since CHOW assures us they can stock our pantry and help us to allocate our funds more efficiently and effectively. To this end, we have requested that those faithful servants who shopped so diligently for our pantry: Suzanne Pettit and Lynn Freeman, not have to shop and lug the groceries into our building. We appreciate their efforts and know that we would not have been able to feed those who visited our pantry without their diligent and thrifty shopping. We thank them for their dedication and service. Well done! I would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Suzanne Pettit as she retires from the CHOW committee. She has been a valuable part of the committee and we wish her luck as she devotes her time to other ministries. Her dedication and passion make our pantry what it is today. We still appreciate donations from parishioners of food and funds as they add variety to the basic staples. We will purchase any food items not otherwise supplied from the Buyers Club which will allow us to purchase food at a discounted rate in larger quantities. Food bought will be delivered with our twice a month delivery. Thank you, Suzanne and Lynn, and all who make our pantry a symbol of hope, for those who would otherwise go hungry. Father John+ 10
11 National Wear RED Day Friday, February 1st Why go Red? Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. That s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 1, 2019, and encourage others to do the same. Also, make time to Know Your Numbers. Five numbers that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare providers determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. Wear red. On National Wear Red Day, be sure to wear something red to show your support for women with heart disease and strokes. 13 Dick Schwab for Warden In 2008 I retired from my position as Director of Forest Properties at SUNY/ESF Syracuse, after 34 years with the College, and still do some forestry consulting work. I was raised in the Catholic faith and attended the Episcopal Church on occasion with Sandy while we were dating, and was received into the Episcopal Church after we were married. During my time at our former church I served on Vestry, was Treasurer, headed the Finance Committee, served on the Property Committee, and ushered. When we decided to seek a new church home, we visited many wonderful churches in the Greater Binghamton Area, but found we kept being drawn back to St. Paul's where we found everything we were looking for warmth, tremendous ministry, outreach, caring, fellowship and so much more the people of St. Paul's live their faith. We knew we had found our home and remain happy to be part of the St. Paul's family. In my time here I have served as an added set of hands whenever there was a need rummage sale clean-up, Christmas decorating, helping at the Trinity Canteen, and church dinners. I am a regular attendee of the Rector's Forum, Lenten studies, and many of the wonderful extra services, activities and events that take place at St. Paul's. I feel St. Paul's has greatly strengthened my faith and I have grown during my time here. I would be pleased to offer more of my time and experience to St. Paul's as a warden. Jim Garceau I am a mechanical engineer by degree and am currently the VP/Deputy GM at BAE Systems. I started coming to St Paul s back in the late 1980 s. At that time, I was single, new to the area, and Methodist. My older brother had recently been ordained as an Episcopal deacon, so I thought I would include Episcopal churches in my search for a church. When I visited St Paul s for the first time, it happened to be the Sunday of the Youth Service. I felt God so present in this place on that day that I knew my search had ended. Back then, I was a Sunday service member. Over the next few years, I got married and had my sons Jimmy and Mathew. Kids and work filled my life and church was still something you did on Sunday morning. We left Endicott in 1994 due to a job transfer and then returned in When we came back, we returned to St Paul s and then things began to change! A few months after we came back, Eunice Barton asked me if I would be willing to fill a vacant spot on the vestry until the next election. I said I would, thinking that a few months later I would be done and could go back to my Sunday pew. Well, during those months, Jim Corl asked me if I would consider running for warden. My son Christopher had been born and this was a big commitment so I told him I had to think it over. During the next few weeks, I prayed about it. And as I talked to God, I heard His calling. For some reason that I couldn t figure out, He wanted me to say yes so I did. During the next six years as warden, I had some great times and some really tough times, but as I served, this church gave me much more. It gave me a second family, the joy of helping others, and a much closer relationship with God, things I will cherish the rest of my life. My three boys grew up at St. Paul s and were active in Sunday School, Youth Group, acolytes, New Beginnings and Happenings. I was honored to serve this church in the past and would be honored to serve it again. 13
