Christ Church on Capitol Square Choral Evensong According to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Sunday, February 18, p.m. First Sunday in Lent The Adult Choir David Jernigan, Organist/Choirmaster Peter Morey, Organ & Choirmaster Fellow 1

Welcome to Choral Evensong. We hope that you will enter into a time of prayer by letting the voices of the Choir lift your thoughts and prayers to the throne of God s grace. While the Choir will pray most of the responses and canticles on your behalf, you are invited to participate heartily in the singing of the hymns. Please silence electronic devices. Sit Voluntary Sit Introit: Eternal Light Leo Sowerby Eternal Light, shine into our hearts, Eternal Goodness, deliver us from evil, Eternal Power, be our support, Eternal Wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance, Eternal Pity, have mercy upon us; Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Stand Not here for high and holy things Hymn 583 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Psalm li. 9 DEARLY beloved people of God, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me; A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling. 2 Kneel ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have

mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Preces and Responses Philip Radcliffe Officiant: Choir: Officiant: Choir: Officiant: Choir: O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. 3

4 Sit The Psalm: Psalm 103 Crotch/Cambridge 1 Praise the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, praise his holy Name.* 2 Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits;* 3 Who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities:* 4 Who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness;* 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, making thee young and lusty as an eagle.* 6 The Lord executeth righteousness and judgement for all them that are oppressed with wrong.* 7 He shewed his ways unto Moses, his works unto the children of Israel.* 8 The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, long-suffering, and of great goodness.* 9 He will not always be chiding; neither keepeth he his anger for ever.* 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses.* 11 For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth; so great in his mercy also toward them that fear him.* 12 Look how wide also the east is from the west; so far hath he set our sins from us. 13 Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children, even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him.* 14 For he knoweth whereof we are made; he remembereth that we are but dust.* 15 The days of man are but as grass; for he flourisheth as a flower of the field.* 16 For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17 But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear him; and his righteousness upon children s children;* 18 Even upon such as keep his covenant, and think upon his commandments to do them.*

19 The Lord hath prepared his seat in heaven, and his kingdom ruleth over all.* 20 O praise the Lord, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength, ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his word.* 21 O praise the Lord, all ye his hosts, ye servants of his that do his pleasure.* 22 O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion; praise thou the Lord, O my soul.* Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Sit The New Testament Lesson: 1 Peter 3:18-22 Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 5

Kneel Magnificat Charles Villiers-Stanford in A This is the song of Mary when she was told that she was to be the mother of Christ; forming a bridge between the two lessons. My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 6 Sit The Gospel: Mark 1:9-15 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Kneel Nunc Dimittis Charles Villiers-Stanford Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Sit Homily The Rev. Mary Davila Apostles Creed Intoned by all. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Kneel The Prayers (Sung by the Choir) Philip Radcliffe Officiant: The Lord be with you. Choir: And with thy spirit. Officiant: Let us pray. Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. The Lord s Prayer is sung by the Choir on behalf of the congregation. 7

Suffrages (Prayers sung responsorially by the Choir and Officiant) V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, save the state. R. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. V. Endue the ministers with righteousness. R. And make thy chosen people joyful. V. O Lord, save thy people. R. And bless thine inheritance. V. Give peace in our time, O Lord. R. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. V. O God, make clean our hearts within us. R. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. The Collects Collects are intoned by the Officiant; the Choir responds by singing Amen. Collect for the Day O God, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know thee now by faith, to thy presence, where we may behold thy glory face to face; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Church Musicians and Artists O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Collect for Aid against Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. 8

Sit Stand Offertory Anthem O Lord support us David Briggs OLORD, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen. The General Thanksgiving (said by all) Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Stand Closing Versicle and Grace Stand The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended Hymn 24 Sit Voluntary 9
