The entire service is printed in the bulletin with the exception of the hymns which are found in the blue Common Praise book in your pew. The regular Sunday School and Nursery programs offered at this service are on break for the summer, however a Summer Children s Program is offered in the Welcome Room from June August. If your child(ren) would prefer to remain in the service they are most welcome. We also have activity bags available from the Sidespeople for the children s use during the service. First Lesson: Acts 1:6-14 THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of 5

Second Lesson: 1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. Sermon: The Rev. Lisa Newland The Apostles Creed (Please stand) Celebrant: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Leader: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence for reflection is kept Celebrant: Most merciful God, All: we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread Celebrant: Lord, we died with you on the cross. All: Now we are raised to new life. People: Thanks be to God. All baptized persons are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those not receiving communion may wish to receive a blessing instead. To indicate this to the priest, please cross your hands over your chest. Communicants who do not wish to drink from the chalice should not dip the bread into the cup. Instead, after eating the bread, cross your hands over your chest as the chalice bearer passes by, or make a sign of reverence by gently touching the base of the chalice when it is presented to you. Those drinking from the chalice are asked to assist the chalice bearer by grasping it at the base and guiding it to their lips. Any children wishing to receive from the chalice are encouraged to stand to assist the chalice bearer. Anointing: If you wish to receive anointing for healing, please approach one of the anointers prior to receiving Holy Communion. 10

13 ... Psalm 68:1 10, Today's psalm is considered by most scholars to be one of the four or five most ancient poems in the Hebrew scriptures. Its style, language and themes suggest that it may date from before 1000 BCE. Numbers10:35 tells us that the opening line (and perhaps the whole psalm) was the song sung as the Levites and Priests lifted the Ark of the Covenant each day to lead the people through their wilderness journey. In form it is a great processional victory song (vv 2, 12, 15, 21-23, 24-27). It celebrates Israel's God, YHWH, as the One who rides the storm in the heavens like a warrior (vv 3-4, 8-9, 17-18, 34-35), and who is also at the same time attentive to orphans, widows, the lonely, and prisoners, bringing them aid, community, freedom and hope (vv 5-6, 19-20). The latter part of the poem may have been added in a later period after the building of the Jerusalem temple (v 29-32) to make it suitable for continuing use. In ancient Israel, women were the singers of victory songs, and very recent scholarship suggests that they also drummed as they sang (see v 25 and compare Ex 15:20.) For that reason, some scholars would argue that this great ancient hymn was almost certainly written by women.) [Dr. Walter Deller/2017]... 13

15 PARISH & COMMUNITY EVENTS For week of May 29, 2017 HOUSEHOLD SHOWER FOR NEEMA AND CHANCE Today, the Refugee Resettlement Committee will be hosting a shower for Neema and Chance as they start their new life in Toronto. Neema and Chance will be arriving in Toronto on Thursday, June 1. The original list of needs on the bulletin board at the George Henry entrance has mostly been taken but we are asking for new household and personal items and toiletries. Unwrapped items can be left on the table in the hallway. Please join us after both 8:00 and 10:00 o clock services for special goodies and fellowship. Thank you for your support. 17 PARISH MINISTRY FAIR & BBQ Sunday, June 4, after both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services. Join us on Pentecost Sunday, for our annual Parish Ministry Fair! Visit the many Ministry presentation tables after the 8:00 a.m. service the 10:00 a.m. service. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the many ministries that go on here at St. Matthew s, to learn more about them, hear from those directly engaged in each of the ministries and find out how you might become involved. After 10:00 a.m. service we invite you to enjoy us for a hot dog or hamburger hot off our BBQ on the patio!... Ministry Leaders The displays will be manned by Ministry leaders supported by members of the respective ministries who will be delighted to share how you, too, can become involved in Ministry. On Saturday, June 3, at 4:00 p.m. volunteers are welcome to come out and help the leaders set up for Sunday s Fair. 17
