3 The Sandpiper North Falmouth Congregational Church, United Church of Christ October 2018 Dear Friends, Pastoral Page Traditionally in this church, October is Stewardship Month and that is true this year! Some things are not changed! The Finance Committee is happy about that and so is the Stewardship Team. Actually, all of us can be happy about this because Stewardship brings the invitation to think about your priorities. Someone one said to me that if you look at your calendar and your check book you will see patterns as to how time and money is spent and realize what is most important to you. We do not need to wait for New Years to consider our lives patterns. Right now, in October we can ask ourselves questions and think about what we value. With that in mind, the Stewardship Team has chosen our theme for this year to be Building Community: What Shall We Bring? When someone invites you to their home, it is a natural response to ask, what shall I bring? we are all eager to contribute and to show gratitude for invitations. Here at church, the invitation is special and unique because it is an invitation to work together as a community as we experience and share Gods love. church mean to each other, and gratitude for the opportunities we have to be of service in our community and world. May we be guided by the words of scripture found in Micah: What does the Lord require of you but to do Justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. This six part series will be held at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Boathouse at 131 Waquoit Hwy (Rt.28) in the Waquoit Village of Falmouth. Parking is close by on the Reserve. Focusing on Creation Care, this Bible study series is intended to help reconnect us with God and our relationship to the environment; focusing each week on a different subject and a related Bible passage. The topics will be Earth, Water, Air, Animals, Humanity and Stewardship. The study will be led by Linda Bowers, participant from First Congregational Church, Falmouth. Each session is independent of the others. FIVE WISHES WORKSHOP at North Falmouth and Waquoit Congregational Churches A free workshop on The Five Wishes advance directives for end of life - will be held Monday, Oct. 15, 6 7 p.m. at the Waquoit Congregational Church. A day-time workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16, 12 noon at the North Falmouth Congregational Church. Both workshops are opened to the public, and everyone will receive a The Five Wishes booklet. The Five Wishes is an easy-to-use legal advance directive document written in everyday language. It helps all adults, regardless of age or health, to consider and document how they want to be cared for at the end of life. It is America s most popular living will with more than 30 million copies in circulation. Five Wishes is unique among all other living will and health agent forms because it speaks to all of a person's needs: medical, personal, emotional and spiritual. Five Wishes also helps to guide and structure discussions with your family and physician, making conversations easier. The Rev. Nell Fields and Kathleen Welcome, a certified grief counselor, will facilitate both workshops. Massachusetts attorney Sarah J. Long will be available to answer any legal-related questions. Both events are sponsored by the Waquoit Congregational Church and North Falmouth Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. 6 Christian Education News Rally Day Thank you to everyone who helped make Rally Day a success. Were it not for the volunteers who were willing to come early in the morning to set up and all of those who donated food, our event would not have happened. Family Faith and Fun Night After one of our August lobster roll suppers, five of our families and a few friends enjoyed an evening of hot dogs, fun and games outside. 7 HOLIDAY FAIR at NFCC Saturday, November 10 th Kids Cooking Ministry Kids and their families continue to cook every month to contribute desert for the Village at Cataumet dinner. Now we have also begun making our homemade treats for the Habitat Build in Marstons Mills. We are always recruiting help to deliver these treats on the morning of the fourth Saturday of the month so if you would like to help let Lisa know. We have some excellent young cooks among us who are learning the importance of helping others and having fun doing it! The Holiday Fair is early this year so mark your calendars for November 10th!!! Sign-up sheets to help and food donations sign-up sheets will be in Covenant Room. Around mid Oct. so please sign up or Myrna or Carolee that you can help. Please put posters up at your work place and around town. The day will be here before you know it. We could use everybody's help this year as the date gets closer. DECEMBER 9 A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS TEA WITH THE LASKO S. 2PM From Stewardship Save The Date, October 28th is Stewardship Sunday What shall we bring is the theme of our stewardship journey this year. Leading up to Stewardship Sunday we will hear from members of our congregation discussing what our Church means to them and how important it and we are in their faith journey. Your Stewardship Team looks forward to worshiping with you on Stewardship Sunday to celebrate the gifts we bring to our church and our community. The Altar Committee Christmas Poinsettias...Mahoney's has requested that the poinsettia order be in to them 4 weeks in advance of pick up date. Therefore, the deadline for ordering poinsettias this year will be Sunday, Nov 11th. If you wish to place an order, please fill out an order form found here on page 7, the weekly announcements Oct 28th, Nov 4th & Nov 11th and on the counter outside the office during the week starting in mid-october. Also this year, the poinsettia display will only be on Sunday, December 16th. Poinsettias donated for shut-ins will be delivered that day. Poinsettias designated to be picked up by the donor will also be available after the 10 AM service on Dec 16th. Pocket Prayer Shawls Be sure to take a Pocket Prayer Shawl from the basket on the table in the hall by the office window. These are for your Pocket or Purse, so that when you touch it you are reminded that God is always with you. WHAT IS ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT GOING GREEN? WHY THE GREEN TEE SHIRTS? North Falmouth Congregational Church has taken on the GREEN CHALLENGE through the Mass Conference. There are three levels of green! Each level has a set of suggested green projects to take on. Some are as simple as recycling, cleaning heating filters, holding informational meetings on environmental topics or just plain using LED lighting and turning off lights when not in a room. The list is in the covenant room along with an opportunity for you to lead a team along with others to help make our church GREEN! THANK YOU for working toward a better environment and world.
