1 F I R S T E V A N G E L I C A L L U T H E R A N C H U R C H Celebrating Seventy Years of God s Amazing Grace Mission Moments M a r c h Volume 14 Issue 3 In Response to the Good News of Jesus Christ: Our Purpose Gathered to worship! Sent to witness and serve! Our Vision To become more diverse, creative, nurturing, and welcoming within our congregation and in the wider community. Our Guiding Principles... We will follow Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We will read, teach, and preach God s Word faithfully. We commit to prayer and worship as a way of life. We invite people to know Jesus Christ. Reconciling in Christ Welcoming Statement First Evangelical Lutheran Church/La Primera is committed to being a radically loving and welcoming community of faith, centered in the Good News of Jesus Christ. Therefore, in faithfulness to the Gospel and our Lutheran heritage, and to the best of our ability, we promise to provide programs, ministries, and pastoral care to all who seek God in this place. All are welcome here, including persons of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, age, gender, marital status, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Contact Us Phone: (480) Fax: (480) felc@firstevlutheran.com Web: After 4 months of being with First Evangelical Lutheran Church - 4 months! Sometimes it feels like a lifetime, sometimes it feels like a snap. I've come to appreciate the ways in which we are growing together and getting to know one another. Change is hard, nostalgia is hard to navigate but we have managed to come this far by God's grace, and our willingness to move forward. Big projects are coming, particularly our updating of the congregational constitution to conform to ELCA standards. I'm excited to be part of this work that will most likely take the better part of 2019 to complete. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to be part of Congregational Vitality Training -formerly known as Redevelopment Training- and it was exciting to be in a room FILLED with pastors both new and seasoned trying to figure out how to be the church together. I am extremely thankful for your willingness to let me go to this training and I'm already looking at ways to implement some of the tools and skills I picked up during my time there. Now I'm writing from First Call Theological Education in Las Vegas, Nevada, and immediately after this will be taking some vacation time with Jeffrey to Mexico City. It's funny how a few months ago we were strangers but today as I pray for you and keep you present as I learn and share with my colleagues. I realize what an important part of my life you've all become. Thank you for coming into my life and embracing me into the First family. You're all in my prayers and I look forward to seeing you when we get back home. This is also a good time to remember that Lent is coming! This year's theme for Lent will be Healing. We will be exploring healing in its many forms and how God and our community play a part in it. Holden Evening Prayer is the format we will be using for the Wednesday, 6 PM midweek service. I hope you find this exploration on healing meaningful for your life and ministry. Pastor Abel.

3 First Evangelical/La Primera Lutheran Church Council Meeting Minutes for February 10, Present: Pastor Abel Arroyo (by phone), Carmen Guerrero, Rhonda Schmidt, Sarah Shaw, Evan Rogers, Kathleen Rogers, Virginia Daniels, Connar Schmidt, Sara Velasquez Absent: Diane Johnson, Don Johnson A. President Evan Rogers called the meeting to order at 12:36. He welcomed the new members of Council Virginia Daniels, Sara Velasquez, Connar Schmidt and thanked them for their willingness to serve. For a devotion, Evan read the Bishop s monthly message from Living Lutheran magazine. Bishop Eaton comments on the decline of the modern church across denominations, even as she encourages the church to be open to God s leading us to create a new thing, not just mourn the passing of the old. B. Minutes of the January 6, 2019 were reviewed. Carmen moved the minutes be approved, Rhonda seconded, the motion passed unanimously. C. Reports Treasurer s Report At the end of the first month of a new year, income exceeded expenses by $650. There were no questions about the report. Pastor Abel s Report In January pastor made several visits and phone calls and attended a conference meeting where he is seeking to raise our profile with other congregations. He is a little concerned he is missing come communications from the Synod office, but understands new staff is being trained. He attended Congregational Vitality training in Las Vegas last week and considered it very worthwhile in terms of resources identified and networking with pastors at congregations facing challenges similar to ours. Report on La Primera Carmen reported that attendance has been improving with a more reliable pastoral schedule. On Wednesday Feb 13 there will be a Convivio as part of the That s Amore annual dinner. Sara volunteered to hand out flyers in the neighborhood. The March Convivio will be at Pioneer Park on Sunday the 24 th from 2 to 6. The quarterly Convivio grant report is due into the Synod. Carmen will provide dates and attendance, along with a brief narrative, which Kathleen will submit online, along with the financial report. Approval of Reports A motion to approve as submitted was made by Sarah, seconded by Virginia. There was no additional discussion, the vote was called, and the motion carried. D. Old Business 1. Endowment will provide $7500 to partially reimburse the school for the $15,000 they paid in October to partially repair the roof. Because the fund took a hit in the last quarter of 2018, Ellen and Kathleen will review fund balances at the end of the first quarter of 2019 to determine the best time to pull money out. E. New Business 1. Election of Council Officers - Kathleen nominated Sarah to be President, Carmen seconded. Sarah indicated her willingness to serve. The vote was unanimous in favor of the nomination. Rhonda nominated Kathleen to serve another term as Treasurer. Sarah seconded, the vote was unanimous in favor of the nomination. Kathleen nominated Rhonda to serve as Vice President, Evan seconded, the vote was unanimous in favor of the nomination. Evan agreed to serve as President Emeritus. 2. Other new business Pastor brought up the fact there is an ELCA 2016 model constitution that the congregation should adopt before a 2019 version is released later this year. He further noted the bylaws will need to be re-written as well. We need to work to have this ready for the next annual congregational meeting in January Other new business Rhonda commented that Gloria Pease told her there was money available in the coffee fund. Council will consider the best use of these funds. 4. Change for Change giving was discussed, and it was agreed to keep the same schedule as last year, except for November, when it will be designated for Helen s Hope Chest to provide clothing for foster children. (continued on next page)

4 (continued from previous page) 5. With the addition of Connar to Council, a Youth Report will be added to the Reports agenda every month. They are currently looking to ways to partner with other Youth groups. 6. Pastor Abel noted we have several sets of communion ware that is not being used. He would like us to prayerfully gift these and other worship supplies to new start churches or worshipping communities. It was agreed this would be a good thing to pursue. 7. Virginia noted that the Christian Movement group has declined, but it is the only social group available to older congregants. She asked for suggestions to increase participation and wondered if they would do the May luncheon. Carmen suggested combining with a Convivios event for the neighborhood. Connar suggested a Saturday intergenerational board game day with Youth and Christian Movement members. F. Adjournment and Closing with the Lord s Prayer Carmen moved to adjourn, Rhonda seconded, the vote was unanimous, and the meeting closed at 1:55. Council joined hands for the closing prayer. 4 The Food Pantry Needs: Canned vegetables Spaghetti Concordia Charter School collects all of these items: Please bring on Sunday mornings or to the office Monday-Wednesday, 8:30-2:30. Bring yours to church and deposit them in the box in the Great Room or put them in the offering plate. Thanks for your support! $392 was raised to help sent our youth to Campformation! We couldn t have done it without you.
