2 April News Church of the Redeemer April 2013 Good Things Are Happening At Redeemer In my last news article I told of how the SOJ's were trying to save the church some money by taking care of the sidewalks this winter, and how it would be more convenient to have our own snow-blower at the church. Now thanks to Dick Lacey, Gertrude Gauss, John Lewis, Gretchen Rentschler, Margret Cole, and Elaine Ferris for donating the money, the church has a brand new snow-blower that was purchased on March 10th. A big thank-you to Mr. Lacey whose idea it was to purchase the snow-blower and got the snowball rolling with the first donation. Jim Shay and David Griffith and myself have done the walks the last 3 times, bringing the total to 9 times we have taken care of the sidewalks this year. Spring is just around the corner and two tell tale signs are the robins are back and Glenn Murrelle was spotted at the church trimming some shrubs. Plans are being made for our first spring clean up as soon as the weather breaks. With all the work we did last fall it should be an easy one. Youth Group Takes on The Senators! The Youth Group attended a hockey game at the Binghamton Arena on Friday, I hope to follow the same format as last year where we work a little on the grounds and then have a tail-gate meal in the parking lot. One project on the to do list is to try and tackle cleaning up the lawn mower room. There are a lot of things in there that can be recycled or thrown out. I hope to have it looking as good as the Sunday School room that was cleaned out by Betsy Schumacher and Gretchen Rentschler. What a job they did. Thank you. There is much to discuss with the roof repairs and how we are going to pay for this large endeavor. The building committee has met and made some recommendations to the vestry. There are letters going out to the community, parish and we are planning a parish wide meeting/pot luck supper to discuss the Raise the Roof Campaign sometime in April. 3 Sunday School Happenings The Sunday School is heading into Spring with the anticipation of a number of exciting events! Please mark your calendars for the following dates you won t want to forget! Please note the deadline for the May 2013 Newsletter will be Tuesday, April 23. Thank you for your contributions! Lasagna Dinner Our Lasagna Dinner will be on April 11 th. Serving will start at 4:30 pm and end at 7:00pm. Dinner includes salad, dessert, and beverage. The cost is $7.00. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Knoebels Our annual Knoebels day is May 18 th. Plan to attend this fun-filled day! Vacation Bible School VBS will be held on June 24 th,25 th, 26 th, and 27 th. Helpers are always welcome at Vacation Bible School. Please let me know if you are interested in joining us. Bonnie Garrity A BIG THANK YOU to the Youth Group for their very moving Good Friday Service on Wednesday, March 27. Emma Cole, Emily Garrity, Megan Middlebrook, Emily Schamel, Sarah Schamel, Phill Bennett, Stacia Sullivan, and Neil Carpenter all did a great job! Special thanks to Margaret Cole for once again organizing this prayerful evening! Also, a thank you for all who came to share in the service and support our youth! Saint Mary s Guild The Mother - Daughter/ Friend Banquet will be held May 7 th 2013 at 6:30pm. The event will be catered by Henry Farley, and the Karpala s, a husband and wife duo from Oswego NY, will provide our musical entertainment. The will be a sign up sheet in the church as the date draws closer with menu options. The Spring rummage sale will be held May 10 th from 9-4pm, May 11 th from 9-noon and the bag sale will be on the 11 th from 11-noon. There will also be a bake sale to help fund our annual trip to Knoebles. Set up for the Spring rummage sale will be May 9 th. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 7PM. Linda Vogel from the Valley Floral Shoppe will help us welcome Spring flowers. Please join us and don't forget your pennies! Cheese Sale Success! The Youth Group asked you to Say Cheese and you did! The sale was a huge success raising $ for our roof! We sold 347 pounds of cheese!! Thanks for buying and selling cheese for us. Special thanks to Rose Carpenter for helping organize all of the sheets to put the order together, and to Bob Cole for making the trek with me to LeRaysville (twice) to pick up the order. Thanks also to Trisha Bennett, Gretchen Rentschler, and Mary Rhodes for giving up your Saturday afternoon to help us sort through the mountain of cheese and bag the orders to deliver. We would not have been as successful without each of you and we thank you!i want to especially thank the youth who did a great job selling, sorting, and delivering all of the orders. You are a great group and I love working with you! You bring smiles to every chore we do. You make a difference. 4 From The Priest In Charge... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus, commonly referred to as Easter, is the central event of the Christian faith. The language of resurrection, Easter language, is how we as Christians talk about spiritual transformation. Resurrection is not about bringing the dead back to the same life they knew before they died. Resurrection is about transformation from a life limited by physical constraints to a life of freedom in God. We don t have to die in the physical sense to experience such a transformation! We can know resurrection in our minds, souls, hearts and spirits while we are physically alive. Christianity is an inside job. It comes from the inside of us. What we believe forms who we are, and is then exhibited in how we act. Resurrection is an outward manifestation of the inward grace of God. (I m sure the old time Episcopalians will remember that phrase from their training for Confirmation as the definition of a sacrament.) In a larger perspective it was a manifestation of a new chapter in human existence. The Bible speaks of other people of faith participating in new chapters in human existence as well: Adam and Eve and the Creation; Noah and the Flood; Abraham and his journey in faith; Moses and the Exodus; Isaiah and the idea of a Suffering Messiah. Jesus came out of a long line of ancestors who had experienced new chapters of faith and new chapters of faith are still being written today in us! If we are people of resurrection, then the ramifications of such transformation is still lived out in the world through our lives in faith. Will we choose to be a part of the Easter message of resurrection, living a life of spiritual metamorphosis and transformation? Or will we choose to see life only in the realm of our current physical limitations? The opportunity is there. The choice is ours! See you in Church! Fr. Glenn+
