1 Our Vision: A world where people experience God s love and are made whole. Our Mission: To share the love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning. Evensong Thursday 25 October :15 p.m.

2 Evensong Thursday 25 October :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. This service has roots in ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In the 16th century, Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, adapted the monastic patterns as part of the simplification of services within the newlyreformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church inherited this form of evening prayer. In this service we reflect on the past day, pray for the world and for ourselves, and commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity. The eternal bonds of God to humankind are illumined in a distinct way in the covenant of marriage; today, we witness and bless the marriage of Amie Miller and Anna Rossi. May this service be a blessing to us all. Voluntary Vitrail Henry Mulet Opening Sentence Preces Officiant Choir The people stand as the procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter Said by the Officiant. O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. 3 Genesis 18: 1 14 The Lessons read by Todd Miller The Magnificat The people stand. George Dyson Evening Service in F Major Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: Matthew 6: The people sit. read by Julia Ross The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Dyson Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 2: The Homily The people sit. Rabbi Rebekah Stern Officiant Choir The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The creed is omitted this evening. The Prayers Sung by the officiant and choir. Smith The Lord s Prayer All Let us pray. The people may kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Sung on a monotone. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. 2

4 The Suffrages The Collects Officiant Choir O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy holy Spirit from us. Intoned by the officiant. Smith Anthem The people sit. Patrick Hadley Prayers Choir Bishop My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; the fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. Song of Solomon 2: The couple meet the Bishop in the center of the quire. Amie and Anna, you have come here today to seek the blessing of God and of this community upon your marriage. I require, therefore, that you promise, with the help of God, to fulfill the obligations which marriage demands. Answer People Bishop People All respond The Bishop then addresses one member of the couple, then the other, asking: A., you have taken A. to be your wife. Do you promise to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and, forsaking all others, to be faithful to her as long as you both shall live? I do. The Bishop then addresses the congregation, saying Will you who have witnessed these promises do all in your power to uphold these two persons in their marriage? We will. Those whom God has joined together let no one put asunder. Amen. The couple then return to their seats. The Bishop then offers further prayers for the couple. Amen. The Bishop pronounces God s blessing. 3

6 The Readings Genesis 18: 1 14 The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on since you have come to your servant. So they said, Do as you have said. And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes. Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to him, Where is your wife Sarah? And he said, There, in the tent. Then one said, I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son. And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure? The Lord said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, and say, Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old? Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son. Matthew 6: Jesus said, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, What will we eat? or What will we drink? or What will we wear? For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
