2 Welcome to Grace Cathedral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service. about today s readings Acts 2:42-47; 1 Peter 2:19-25; John 10:1-10; Psalm 23 Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet. Our readings for today, traditionally named Good Shepherd Sunday, invite us to ponder the power of the flock. Coming together to pray and to share what we have be it a meal, a story, a task that needs doing has been an essential part of Christian identity from the earliest days of struggle and formation for the new community. In recent days, we ve watched people come together to celebrate and defend what they love, and which they fear has become vulnerable maybe we ve been part of some of those gatherings ourselves. The strength in those numbers outlasts the moment and the issue at hand. Jesus offers us the opportunity to be loved and led as his beloved flock because he knows that to be fully human is to be together. As individuals, we slip and we waver and we lose our bearings once in a while. Our companions are there to encourage us, to help us back to the center, to make a funny story about what happened to us while we were wandering. They provide us with the nourishment to persist. I invite you to join me this week in looking around our flocks, wherever they are. How are we making each other s journeys easier or harder? Where is our Good Shepherd leading us? He s calling each of us by name. Carol James has been part of the cathedral community for over a decade. She has served as a co-mentor in the Education for Ministry program. She currently leads the evening prayer providers in our Jail Ministry and is a cathedral staff member. highlights The Forum with Thomas Plante Today 9:30 a.m. Gresham Hall The Stanford psychologist and expert on spirituality and health and Dean Malcolm Young discuss how to manage Post Election Stress Disorder and bring civility and compassion back into politics. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; * thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. All The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 6 The Nicene Creed The Prayers of the People The people stand. After each petition Risen Christ, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect. The Peace Welcome Presider Offertory Sentence Anthem The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you. All may greet each other in the name of Christ. The Holy Communion An offering will be received for the ministries of Grace Cathedral. Thank you for your generosity. Choir All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. William Walton O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Psalm 100 4

10 The Readings Acts 2: They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. 1 Peter 2: For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. John 10: 1 10 Jesus said, Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers. Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. Serving the assembly: Presider Homilist Deacon Lay Assistant Readers Musicians The Rev.
