The season of Epiphany offers us stories of unexpected recognition, the moment when someone a king, a household steward, a rural preacher experiences a ground-shaking aha! Everything is going on normally, until the light of Christ illuminates the landscape and brings all the colors of the world into high relief. It doesn t seem quite fair that in this hemisphere, Epiphany begins in the midst of gloomy January, when we re damp, snuffling, and becalmed after the busy-ness of the holidays. Where s the glory in our return to the daily round of life? Where can we find the light when spring s joy is still in the distance? Our gospel reading today, centering on a small crisis in hospitality, tells us that it s exactly in these daily moments of unbalance and disarray that God s true glory lies hidden, needing just a touch to be released. A good glass of wine in celebration with friends is an excellent miracle to start with. The common comforts that we share with those close to us are great and holy gifts there s color, and warmth, and wonder available to all of us, wherever we are and whenever we choose to celebrate. Janet Morley said it best in this collect: O God of celebration, you have kept the good wine until now the wine that we have longed for, but never thought to taste. Take the tapwater of our lives our struggles and our dullness and with your grace make strong and dark and joyful all that our hearts contain. Carol James has been part of the cathedral community for over a decade. She has served as a co-mentor in the Education for Ministry (EfM) program. 6 The Confession of Sin Deacon Let us confess our sins to God God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. For a variety of reasons, it is our custom to consume the Bread and sip the Wine directly from the cup. You are invited to guide the cup with your hands. If you choose not to receive either the Bread or the Wine, simply cross your arms over your chest and respond A men when it is presented. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. John 2:1-11 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
