3 Evensong Thursday in Fifthteenth Week after Pentecost 25 August :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cadral. Choral Evensong marks end of working day and prepares for approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in 16 th century, as part of simplification of services within newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on business of past day, to pray for world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of music is offered to help us set our lives in light of eternity; same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Opening Sentence Preces Officiant Choir The people stand as procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. John Rutter Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost; As it was in beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. A men. 4 Judges 4:1 10 The Readings The Magnificat The people stand. Stephen Sturk Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis Choir My soul doth magnify Lord, and my spirit hath reoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on m that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered proud in imagination of ir hearts. He hath put down mighty from ir seat, and hath exalted humble and meek. He hath filled hungry with good things, and rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefars, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1:45 55 Romans 1:8 17 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Sturk Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before face of all people, To be a light to lighten Gentiles, and to be glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Remarks The Apostles Creed All Sung by all on a monotone. I believe in God, Far almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by Holy Ghost, born of Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on right hand of God Far almighty. From nce he shall come to udge quick and dead. I believe in Holy Ghost, holy catholic Church, communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of body, and life everlasting. Amen. Luke 2:

7 The Readings Judges 4:1 10 The Israelites again did what was evil in sight of Lord, after Ehud died. So Romans 1:8 17 Lord sold m into hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoiim. Then Israelites cried out to Lord for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed Israelites cruelly for twenty years. At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was udging Israel. She used to sit under palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bel in hill country of Ephraim; and Israelites came up to her for udgement. She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, The Lord, God of Israel, commands you, Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from tribe of Naphtali and tribe of Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera, general of Jabin s army, to meet you by Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand. Barak said to her, If you will go with me, I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go. And she said, I will surely go with you; neverless, road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for Lord will sell Sisera into hand of a woman. Then Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh. Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and ten thousand warriors went up behind him; and Deborah went up with him. First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout world. For God, whom I serve with my spirit by announcing gospel of his Son, is my witness that without ceasing I remember you always in my prayers, asking that by God s will I may somehow at last succeed in coming to you. For I am longing to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengn you or rar so that we may be mutually encouraged by each or s faith, both yours and mine. I want you to know, brors and sisters, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as I have among rest of Gentiles. I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to foolish hence my eagerness to proclaim gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of gospel; it is power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to Jew first and also to Greek. For in it righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, The one who is righteous will live by faith. 5
