2 Welcome to this sacred place where we are reimagining church with courage, joy and wonder. Every year we choose a theme to help us explore new ideas and to listen for God s calling. In 2019 our theme is the Year of the Body. Our body is the way we meet the world and the world meets us. Although we share much that is in common, our bodies are each unique and particular, and every body is worthy of respect. We believe that God participated in the world through a body. So we will be examining how we care for bodies, how we treat different kinds of bodies and how we are part of the earth s body. This year we will dance together, eat together and study what it means for Christians to understand the church as the Body of Christ. We invite you to be part of this body, this joyful community, even if your visit is short. How is God inviting you to be more truly alive today? What are our bodies saying to us? Master, it is good for us to be here! What better time than the threshold of Lent to reflect on who we are and where we are going and how we are going to get there? Today s readings inspire us to move ahead with boldness. In Christ, as Paul says,... all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. The Transfiguration is not just about Jesus, but about the disciples themselves, prefiguring not only the radiant glory of the resurrected Christ but also the unimaginable metamorphosis of Galilean fishermen and even 21st-century congregants of Grace Cathedral into saints and apostles, servants of God s will and bearers of God s grace. In our own unique ways, yet in a manner incomprehensible to us, we are all being transformed together into the image we see in the face of Jesus Christ. How can we cooperate with this divine process? As we head into Lent, what burdens can we drop? What veils can we shed? What can be cleared away so that joy might be more fully realized in our life and reflected in our countenance? In a recent sermon, our Dean outlined a simple and beautiful formula for living in Christ: go deeper, drop your fears, and embrace God s abundance. This is what Peter, James and John, and all of us, are being asked to do. Jesus says, truly there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God may we be among them! This reflection was written by Peter Grace, a congregant for eight years and a 2014 graduate of the Education for Ministry (EfM) program. 6 The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. Luke 9:28-36 About eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 2 Corinthians 3:12--4:2 Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!
