2 Welcome to Grace Cathedral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service. about today s readings Proverbs 31:10-31; Psalm 1; James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a; Mark 9:30-37 Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet Today s first reading, The Poem on the Capable Woman, bids us cringe. Originally observations (not revelation!) from father to son, it contains few jewels for the 21st-century wisdom-seeker until its end. Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city gates. Wisdom knows credit is not always given where credit is due. Who also deserves accolades for the progress you or we seem to have achieved? Don t hold back: the heart of healthy relationships is acclaiming all the good that our partners are and accomplish. The Epistle and the Gospel also coach us toward more honest relationships. Even beautiful, counter-cultural self-promotion see #Iamremarkable or #followme is still attention-seeking. God calls us beyond these cravings and jockeying for position. God is not friending our competitions, but our compassion for the vulnerable. So what is good for the children? Or their children? Truth & LIght: Stewardship 2019 Stewardship helps provide core mission support for cathedral life, enriching those who give and those we serve. Truth & Light launches next week on September 30. Two weeks ago, Grace Cathedral hosted an array of Global Climate Action Summit events. We know that the most vulnerable dimensions of life today are ecological, and those most affected by climate change are the most vulnerable. For their sake, God invites our willingness to yield to a more plant-based diet, to fewer consumer goods and cars, to smaller, greener spaces. What arguments can we set aside on the way? As faithful, capable humans, God invites us to hold the children in our arms and their future in our hands. Anna E. Rossi has served in multiple roles on the Grace Cathedral staff, most recently as Succentor. A seminary graduate, Anna is sponsored by this cathedral congregation in a process to be ordained a priest in The Episcopal Church. highlights The Forum with Sukey Bryan Today, September 23 9:30 a.m. Gresham Hall For 2018, our theme is truth, and for her residency, Bryan has created original works inspired by the resonance between the cycles and elements in nature and human experience. In this conversation with the Rev. Abbott Bailey, Canon to the Ordinary, Bryan talks about her inspirations and her work. And don t miss this last chance to see her art around the cathedral it comes down tomorrow, September 24.

6 The Nicene Creed The Prayers of the People 4 The people stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. After each petition Lord, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect Presider Holy God, Open our minds that we may learn the truth about our selves. Open our hearts that we may perceive the truth of others. The Confession of Sin The people may kneel. Deacon Let us confess our sins to God God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. The people stand. The peace of Christ be always with you. Haydn Percy Whitlock Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face; here faith can touch and handle things unseen; here would I grasp with firmer hands thy grace, and all my weariness upon thee lean. 10 The Readings Proverbs 31:10-31 capable wife who can find? She is far more A precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from far away. She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and tasks for her servant-girls.she considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed in crimson. She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the city gates, taking his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchant with sashes. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her: Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city gates. James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and God will draw near to you. Mark 9:30-37 Jesus and his disciples went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again. But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.
