3 Evensong Thursday in the Third Week after Pentecost 22 June :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16th century, created this form as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary The people stand as the procession enters. Opening Sentence Preces Officiant Choir The Invitatory and Psalter O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Randall Giles Music for Evensong: Grace Cathedral, San Francisco Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia. 4 Ezekiel 17:22-24 The Readings The Magnificat The people stand. Philip Moore Evening Service "San Francisco" Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: Mark 4:26-34 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Moore Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Homily The Apostles Creed All The people sit. Sung by all on a monotone, standing. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Luke 2:

5 Officiant Choir The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. The Prayers Sung by the officiant and choir. All may stand or kneel. Giles The Lord s Prayer Sung by the choir. Giles Choir Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Suffrages Giles The Collects Anthem Officiant Choir Choir Show us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your salvation. Clothe your ministers with righteousness; Let your people sing with joy. Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safety. Lord, keep this nation under your care; And guide us in the way of justice and truth. Let your way be known upon earth; Your saving health among all nations. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten; Nor the hope of the poor be taken away. Create in us clean hearts, O God; And sustain us with your Holy Spirit. Sung by officiant and choir. Leo Sowerby My Master hath a garden full-filled with diverse flowers, where thou may st gather posies gay all times and hours. Where nought is heard but paradise bird, harp, dulcimer and lute, with cymbal and timbrel, and the gentle sounding flute. O Jesus, Lord, my heal and weal, my bliss complete, make thou my heart thy garden plot, true, fair and neat, that I may hear this music clear, harp, dulcimer and lute, with cymbal and timbrel, and the gentle sounding flute. Anonymous Closing Prayers The people may stand or kneel. 3

6 Hymn 31 Sung by all, standing as an offering is received. Dunedin Voluntary text: Latin; tr. Ann[e] K. LeCroy (b. 1930); music: Vernon Griffiths ( )) Musicians: The Men of the Cathedral Choir Benjamin Bachmann, The Diana Dollar Knowles Canon Director of Music David Hatt, Interim Organist The Readings Ezekiel 17:22-24 Thus says the Lord God: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out. I will break off a tender one from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it, in order that it may produce boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Under it every kind of bird will live; in the shade of its branches will nest winged creatures of every kind. All the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken; I will accomplish it. Mark 4:26-34 Jesus said, The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come. He also said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.
