Our Vision: A world where people experience God s love and are made whole. Our Mission: To share the love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning. Choirboys preparing to sing at last Sunday s A Cathedral Christmas concert. Evensong 21 December :15 p.m.
Evensong The Feast of St. Thomas Thursday 21 December :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16th century, created this form as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Choral varié sur O filii et filiae Jeanne Demessieux Opening Sentence Preces Officiant Choir The people stand as the procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Bernard Rose Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. A men. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. Hymn 209 Sung by all. St. Botolph text: Henry Alford ( ), alt.; music: Gordon Slater ( ) 1
Psalm 126 Sung by the choir, the people sit. George M. Garrett (BCP, p. 782) The Readings Habakkuk 2:1-4 The Magnificat The people stand. Stephen Sturk Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: John 20:24-29 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Sturk Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 2 Luke 2: Homily The people sit. The Rev. Dr. Ellen Clark-King, Executive Pastor and Canon for Social Justice The Apostles Creed Sung by all on a monotone, standing. All I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Officiant Choir The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Prayers Let us pray. The people may kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. The Lord s Prayer Sung by all on a monotone. Rose All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Suffrages Rose The Collects Anthem Officiant Choir Choir O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Sung by officiant. 3 Rose Sydney Hugo Nicholson Welcome Yule, thou merry man, In worship of this holy day! Welcome Yule, Welcome Yule. Welcome be thou, heaven-king, Welcome born in one morning, Welcome for whom we shall sing Welcome Yule. Welcome be ye, Stephen and John, Welcome Innocents every one, Welcome Thomas, Martyr one: Welcome Yule. Welcome be ye, good New Year, Welcome Twelfth Day, both in fere, Welcome Saintès lief and dear: Welcome Yule. Welcome be ye, Candlemas, Welcome be ye, queen of bliss, Welcome both to more and less: Welcome Yule. Welcome be ye that are here, Welcome all, and make good cheer, Welcome all another year! Welcome Yule. - Text 15th Century; spelling modernised)
Closing Prayers The people may kneel. Hymn 206 Sung by all, standing as an offering is received. O filii et filiæ Voluntary text: att. Jean Tisserand (15th Cent.); tr. John Mason Neale ( ); music: melody from Airs Sur Les Hymnes Sacres, Odes et Noëls, 1623; acc. Richard Proulx 4
The Readings Habakkuk 2:1-4 will stand at my watchpost, and station I myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. John 20:24-29 Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Homilist Musicians: The Rev.
