2 Evensong Thursday in Third Week After Epiphany 31 January :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cadral. Choral Evensong marks end of working day and prepares for approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in 16th century, created this form as part of simplification of services within newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on business of past day, to pray for world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of music is offered to help us set our lives in light of eternity; same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. 6 The Readings Isaiah 9:1-4 But re will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In former time he brought into contempt land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, but in latter time he will make glorious way of sea, land beyond Jordan, Galilee of nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on m light has shined. You have multiplied nation, you have increased its joy; y rejoice before you as with joy at harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For yoke of ir burden, and bar across ir shoulders, rod of ir oppressor, you have broken as on day of Midian. Matw 4:12-23 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by lake, in territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on road by sea, across Jordan, Galilee of Gentiles people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in region and shadow of death light has dawned.
