Our vision A spiritually alive world Our mission Reimagining church with courage, joy and wonder Tonight s Evensong honors The Bishop s Ranch, our diocesan retreat center in Healdsburg, CA. Evensong Thursday, March 14, :15 p.m.

Evensong Thursday in the Second Week of Lent 14 March : 15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16th century, as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Voluntary in A Matthew Locke Opening Sentence Confession All Bishop or The people stand as the procession enters. Said by the officiant. Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. All may kneel. Almighty and most merciful Father, But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, we have erred and strayed spare thou those who confess their faults, from thy ways like lost sheep, restore thou those who are penitent, we have followed too much according to thy promises the devices and desires of our own hearts, declared unto mankind we have offended against thy holy laws, in Christ Jesus our Lord; we have left undone those things and grant, O most merciful Father, which we ought to have done, for his sake, that we may hereafter live and we have done those things a godly, righteous, and sober life, which we ought not to have done. to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Invitatory and Psalter Preces The people stand. William Byrd Choir O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. A men. Praise ye the Lord. 1

Anonymous English, c Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1:45 55 thee. tide. Matthew 4:5-11 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Mode 2.1 Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 2 Luke 2:29 32 The Sermon The people sit. The Rev. Canon Dr. Ellen Clark-King Executive Pastor and Canon for Social Justice

The Apostles Creed All The people stand. Sung by all on a monotone. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Choir The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Prayers Let us pray. The people may stand or kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. The Lord s Prayer Sung on a monotone. Byrd The Suffrages All Choir Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. Byrd Byrd 3

The Collects Anthem Choir O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Sung by officiant. The people sit. Jesus Christ s gentle mother stood and beheld her son pinned to the cross. The son hung, the mother stood and beheld her child s blood running from his wounds. New bliss he brought, bought dearly for mankind, and he gave his dear life for us. Thou makest us glad and blithe for thy sweet son s sake, Be thou blissful, virgin wife. 11th-Century English Hymn Closing Prayers The people may stand or kneel. The Rev. Jude Harmon Director of Innovative Ministries Hymn 448 Sung by all, standing as an offering is received. Deus tuorum militum text: Latin, 15th cent.; tr. Benjamin Webb ( ), alt.; music: from Antiphoner, 1753; adapt. The English Hymnal, 1906, alt.; harm. after Basil Harwood ( ) Voluntary Voluntary in C Thomas Tomkins 4

The Readings Matthew 4:1-4 Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. But he answered, It is written, One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:5-11 The devil took Jesus to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. Jesus said to him, Again it is written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. Jesus said to him, Away with you, Satan! for it is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.
