1 Our Vision: A world where people experience God s love and are made whole. Our Mission: To share the love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning. In the Year of the Gift, November s theme is The Gift of Memory. This week we celebrate the lives of the saints and remember those who are no longer with us. Saints Sunday 5 November a.m. Choral Eucharist
2 Welcome to Grace Cathedral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service. Find out about our programs for children, youth and families at coffee hour. about today s readings Revelation 7:9-17; Psalm 34:1-10, 22; John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12 Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet. Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. Our reading from the first letter of John offers us a startling possibility: when we celebrate the saints, we might be celebrating ourselves. The mystery of each human, honeycombed with competing impulses, gifts, blind spots and longings, waits to be opened bit by bit by our encounters with each other and with the divine. Suddenly, I see the Beatitudes as a litany of those who have walked forth in faith, never sure of their destination. They may hope that their mourning will lead to comfort, that their thirst for righteousness may be quenched, but they do not know. We do not know. Yet we continue to walk. By Water and the Holy Spirit Today a group of children will be baptized into the Body of Christ. Please keep Alexander, Amara Bianca, Caroline, Harvey, Isabelle, Oliver, Thea, Theodore, Vivienne, Zenaida and those throughout the world who are preparing for baptism in your prayers. For more information on baptism, contact congregation@gracecathedral.org. Our faith keeps us brave when we help launch new lives into unexplored seas, delighted and aghast at the possibilities in front of them. Our faith beckons us forward as those we love step beyond our sight, into a light and love we try to trust, and hope to reach in our own time. It summons us into this motley assortment of pilgrims, where the road is the blessing and where maps are unreliable, even when many have gone before us. Amid dust, sore feet and grumbling, what radiance will be revealed as we travel onward? Carol James has been part of the cathedral community for over a decade. She has served as a co-mentor in the Education for Ministry program. She currently leads the evening prayer providers in the Jail Ministry and is a cathedral staff member. highlights The Forum with Matthew Shilvock Today, November 5 9:30 a.m. Gresham Hall Matthew Shilvock, General Director of the San Francisco Opera, has devoted his career to executive management in the performing arts. He joins the Very Rev. Dr. Alan Jones, Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral, for a conversation about art, locally and politically. Save the Date November 12 Sunday, November 12 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Cathedral Next Sunday will be an event-filled day at the cathedral. At 9:30 a.m. hear the famous Peter Coyote speak at The Forum. Then, be transported by the Choir of Men and Boys singing Mozart s Requiem during the Choral Requiem for Souls with our former dean, the Rev. Dr. Jane Shaw, preaching. At 3 p.m. at the 39th Annual Service of Remembrance, witness the cascade of thousands of poppy petals to honor those who have died in armed conflict. Our former dean, the Very Rev. Dr. Alan Jones, OBE, will be officiating the ceremony.

Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. 4

8 Thanksgiving over the Water The Baptism Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Water is poured over each candidate. N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The Peace 6 Let us welcome the newly baptized: We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. 12 Motet Choir Postcommunion Prayer Charles H. H. Parry My soul, there is a country far beyond the stars, where stands a wingèd sentry all skillful in the wars: there, above noise and danger sweet peace sits crowned with smiles, and one born in a manger commands the beauteous files. He is thy gracious friend, and O my soul awake! Did in pure love descend to die here for thy sake. If thou canst get but thither, there grows the flower of peace, the rose that cannot wither, thy fortress, and thy ease. Leave then thy foolish ranges; for none can thee secure but one who never changes, thy God, thy life, thy cure. Henry Vaughan ( ) After all have received Communion, the people stand. Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Voluntary Pièce d Orgue Johann Sebastian Bach The Readings Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. 1 John 3:1-3 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Matthew 5:1-12 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then Jesus began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward Serving the assembly: The Very Rev.
