2 The Bishop s Ranch a retreat and conference center for all ages About The Bishop s Ranch To come away on retreat is to break out of the rhythm of your ordinary day, to present yourself less encumbered, to open yourself to the possibility of refreshment and deep listening to the Spirit that dwells within. In Celtic Christianity the journey of the spirit is filled with special places of encounter, places of refuge for the spirit, thin places where the invisible and the visible come together almost tangibly, both in you and in creation itself. Whether thin places are geographical or within us, they can be nurturing and healing; sometimes they can move us toward new and deeper understanding and growth. The Bishop s Ranch offers opportunities for us to experience the solace of the earth s physical beauty, whether sitting in a grove of oaks or cedars, or by visiting one of the Ranch s sacred places. Guests are invited to spend time in a space that has become, for many, a place of refuge for the spirit. When you return home, you may find that your time at the Ranch has helped you discover and honor the thin places in your own ordinary days and places. 4 Evensong Thursday in the Third Week of Lent 1 March :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16 th century, as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. 8 The Readings Exodus 3:1-15 Moses was keeping the flock of his fatherin-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up. Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down. 10 response to gun violence community Preventing Gun Violence Gun violence is inconsistent with God s plan for the world. Sharing this truth fits with our theme for 2018, which is truth. Today we welcome gun-culture expert Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz at The Forum. Later this month, we will host a panel discussion with faith partners and representation from the Brady Campaign and SFPD; set up a special altar for the victims of gun violence and participate as a community in the March for Our Lives on March 24.
