2 Welcome to Grace Cathedral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Chapter House Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service. about today s readings 2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15c; 2 Timothy 2:8-15; Luke 17:11-19 Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet. Today s readings prompt us to look anew at a concept we may dismiss as, well, Rolling Stones lyrics. We all crave healing in our lives, and we often want to direct how it is given. Look at Naaman, so inflated by his power as commander of the Syrian army that he takes offense at the advice offered by Elisha s messenger. Naaman expects to be healed the way he deems appropriate the way he wants. After all, isn t he an important man? Hasn t he already traveled with horses and chariots? And, now, Elisha asks him (through an intermediary!) to go wash in a muddy, inferior river! One of Naaman s servants sets him straight, though, and Naaman does what is suggested and, once healed, returns to give homage to Israel s God. In Luke s gospel the only gospel containing this ten lepers follow law and custom in keeping their distance when they call to Jesus for help. They do what he tells them to do, but only one of them, once healed, comes back to give praise and thanks. He is a Samaritan; an outcast, an other. A few verses earlier, the disciples have asked Jesus for faith; this Samaritan shows that he has faith. In both stories, God turns our notions of healing inside out, not just in terms of how we get it, but in terms of trying to limit who deserves it. Grace comes to all, healing us on God s terms, and giving us what we need. This reflection was written by author Lindsey Crittenden. Her essays have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Best American Spiritual Writing, Real Simple, and Bon Appétit. Crittenden participated in Education for Ministry at Grace Cathedral, graduating in She is a member of Saints Episcopal Church and lives in San Francisco. National Hispanic Heritage Month Isabel ende on Women Today 9:30 a.m. Gresham Hall highlights The cover of today s bulletin honors National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Mid-October. Today, at The Forum, Dean Malcolm Clemens Young hosts a conversation with Isabel ende, the world s most widely-read Spanish-language author. Thursday, the Bishop of Cuba will join us at Evensong. Our guest at The Forum on October 23 will be Pulitzer Prize nominee Richard Rodriguez, the son of Mexican immigrants who grew up to be an intellectual dazzler and master of the personal essay. Today is Clergy Appreciation Day We are so thankful for the dedication of our clergy who serve Grace Cathedral. Join us today in thanking those who answer the call to care for the spiritual needs of their communities.

6 The Nicene Creed The Prayers of the The people stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. After each petition Lord, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect. The Confession of Sin Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Peace The presider pronounces God s absolution. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. may greet each other in the name of Christ. Welcome 4

9 Motet Choir William Albright Father, we thank thee who hast planted thy holy Name within our hearts. Knowledge and faith and life immortal Jesus thy Son to us imparts. Thou, Lord, didst make all for thy pleasure, didst give us food for all our days, giving in Christ the Bread eternal; thine is the power, be thine the praise. Watch o er thy Church, O Lord, in mercy, save it from evil, guard it still, perfect it in thy love, unite it, cleansed and conformed unto thy will. As grain, once scattered on the hillsides, was in this broken bread made one, so from all lands thy Church be gathered into thy kingdom by thy Son. Second century Greek text trans. by F. Bland Tucker Postcommunion Prayer After all have received Communion, the people stand. Let us pray. God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. 10 Blessing and Dismissal respond Amen. Deacon The presider pronounces God s blessing. Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. Voluntary Nun danket alle Gott, op. 65 no. 59 Sigrid Karg-Elert The Readings 2 Kings 5:1-3,7 15c Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favour with his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman s wife. She said to her mistress, If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy. When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me. But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha s house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean. But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean? He turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, Wash, and be clean? So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company; he came and stood before him and said, Now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel; please accept a present from your servant. 2 Timothy 2:8 15 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: if we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. Luke 17:11 19 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? Then he said to him, Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. Serving the assembly: The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm C. Young, Dean Homilist The Rev. Mark E.
