1 15 th SUNDAY (Year C) Sea Sunday 12 th July 2016 Go, and do the same yourself THE WORD THIS WEEK Both first reading and Gospel today invite us to be down to earth about the Law of God. It s very easy to become an expert in religion - knowing all the right answers, remembering all the right quotes, and so on. But for Moses and for Jesus, if God s Law is to be kept anywhere, it must be in our hearts and in our everyday lives. We are not to be concerned with keeping our eyes fixed on heaven, if it means that we cannot see the poor man at our feet. TODAY S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 3) Deuteronomy 30: The Word is very near to you for your observance. Response: Psalm 18. The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, it gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding forever. The decrees of the Lord are truth and all of them just. They are more to be desired than gold, than the purest of gold and sweeter are they than honey, than honey from the comb. Colossians 1: All things were created through Christ and for him. Thank you. The MINISTERS OF COMMUNION are asked to pick up their availability sheets from the porch. When you return them, could you add a note if you would be available to take Communion to the housebound, either on a Sunday or during the week, and if so, in which area of the Parish its easier for ministers to minister in their own local area. CENTENARY PILGRIMAGE OF PRAYER: The Centenary Pilgrimage of prayer round the Diocese continues round the Hereford Deanery to our northern-most Parishes, Saint Ethelbert in Leominster with Saint Joseph, Bromyard, and their Parish Priest, Dom Aidan Doyle, Monk of Belmont Abbey.

3 Today is SEA SUNDAY, when the Church prays for all those who live and work on the sea: Without them we would not have most of the items we buy in our shops. There are collection envelopes available in the porch, for the Apostleship of the Sea which supports seafarers both practically and spiritually. For more information, go to CENTENARY MASS in NEWPORT: After the great Festival of Flowers in the Cathedral, the centenary celebrations continue with a solemn Mass in the grounds of Saint Joseph s High School, Newport, today, Sunday 10 th, at 1pm: All are invited, and welcome. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE: As part a national tour, the Miraculous Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will visit Saint David s Cathedral, Cardiff from Friday 8 th July - Thursday 14 th July. See you there with your dancing shoes.. TAKURA GWATINYANYA CAFOD is delighted to welcome to Wales, Takura Gwatinyanya, from Zimbabwe, as part of the One Climate, One World campaign. Takura will share his experiences and explain how campaigning can keep up the pressure for change. The event will help inspire, inform and equip you for action, whether you are new to CAFOD or an experienced campaigner. Register your interest on or southwales@cafod.org.uk A GRAND DAY OUT: EVERYONE IS WELCOME to the first Welsh Provincial GRANDPARENTS Pilgrimage to Belmont Abbey on Saturday week, 16th July, 11am 4pm. This will be a day of faith and fun including face painting, bouncy castle, prayer balloons, sports, and much more, together with Rosary procession, exposition and reconciliation, and the Holy Door of Mercy at Belmont. THE (HOLY) DOORS TOUR: As part of the Year of Mercy, the Pope encourages us to go on pilgrimage, to move out of our accustomed routines and comfort zones, and seek reconciliation and renewal. As well as advertising the annual pilgrimages to local saints (Saint John Kemble, 21 st August; Saint David Lewis 28 th August; and the Tintern Ecumenical Vespers 4 th September) we are planning a parish pilgrimage to visit three of the Holy Doors set up for this Holy Year, in Newport, Belmont, and Merthyr. The proposed date is Saturday 13 th August though that could be re-thought. Interested? Section Two: The Lord s Prayer: Our Father Article 1: The Summary of the Whole Gospel: III. The Prayer of the Church (2767) This indivisible gift of the Lord s word and of the Holy Spirit who gives life to them in the hearts of believers has been received and lived by the Church from the beginning. The first communities prayed the Lord s Prayer three times a day (Cf. Didache 8, 3: SCh 48, 174), in place of the Eighteen Benedictions customary in Jewish piety. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1992 For the essence of human love entails not only giving something to the other, but communicating oneself in that gift and making oneself the gift. By bestowing ourselves in love, we simultaneously divest ourselves; we give our selves away. By giving ourselves away in and through this gift, we nevertheless remain ourselves; in fact we find our own fulfilment in love. For love entails becoming so one with the other that, as a result, neither the beloved nor the lover is absorbed into the other. Rather, love s secret is that in becoming one, we first find ourselves and come to our own individual fulfilment. Obviously such human love is only a very weak image of God s love.
