3 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, Faith Formation Office: reled@stnorbertparish.org Sacramental Life by Jon Konz Heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. -Luke 3: It s amazing the number of things you realize you don t know when you become a parent. Is the baby eating enough? Is the baby eating too much? Does that mark look normal? What should we do about this rash? If we drive down a gravel road will he be too shaken? The list of unknowns goes on. Recently, Brooke and I had Michael baptized. It was beautiful, complete with water, oil, white linen and candles: all those signs and symbols proper to the Sacramental rite. Brooke and I professed our intent to raise Michael to live in our Catholic faith, and all those gathered renewed their own baptismal promises and our son was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As Catholics, we love to talk about the signs and symbols of our faith. In our Sacramental worship, we can easily get caught up in trying to get all the things right and miss out on the absolutely awesome reality we live in: Heaven is opened up and God touches man. In a life full of unknowns, it is refreshing to be reminded that God is available to my family. In the Sacraments, Heaven touches earth. God dwells with us. We are not met once and then left alone. We are relentlessly pursued, intimately known, and irrevocably loved. How do your children pray? We learn best from one another. Share your experience of family prayer with the Faith Forma on Office. That means that any Valentine goodies will need to be in the baskets at church by February 3. If you are thinking of contributing Valentine candy, children s Valentines, baking supplies, cake mixes and frostings, or other treats, please keep that in mind. Catholic Charities, Marillac House, and St. Joseph s Home for the Elderly also welcome seasonal goodies. Bread Brigade Help Needed The Bread Brigade has been rescuing food from local Panera Restaurants for about twenty years. Deerfield Bakery pickups have been part of the routine for the past 9 years. Many high school students have made pickups as they work to earn community service hours for confirmation classes or National Honor Society. There is a continual need for drivers to assist in the pickup and transport of food donations from area restaurants. Please consider being a substitute driver or sign up for 1-2 nights per month. *Split the Sunday night responsibility with another driver for the 8 PM pickup from the Bannockburn Panera at the corner or Rt 22 and Waukegan Road. *Split the Monday night responsibility with another driver for the 9 PM pickup from Deerfield Panera, 190 N. Waukegan Road. *Split the Thursday night responsibility with another driver for the 9 PM pickup from the Deerfield Panera, 190 N. Waukegan Road. *Join the Bread Brigade bread wrappers on Tuesday at 7 AM in the kitchen at Our Lady of the Brook. *Be trained to assist with Deerfield Bakery pickups on Saturday afternoons from 4:30 to 6:00PM. Remember: Many hands make light work. We hope that you will consider joining this group of people who are dedicated to help provide food for the hungry. 9 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. ALL Wednesdays during Lent. 1 st Saturday: Devotion to Immaculate Heart of Mary; Rosary and 15 minute meditation after 8:30 am Mass.
