3 First Sunday of Advent November 27, To Teach Who Christ Is A Campaign for St. Norbert Parish For the past five weeks, our volunteer Ambassadors have been very busy placing calls, scheduling visits and meeting personally with their fellow parishioners to discuss our To Teach Who Christ It campaign. These face -to-face conversations have presented the opportunity to share information, answer questions and invite financial support. Just as importantly, this time together has allowed folks to meet, bond, get to know each other, make new relationships or catch up with old friends. We continue to hear what a great job our Ambassadors are doing, and we appreciate all the time they are putting into this effort. Obviously, their love for St. Norbert is strong and today we publicly thank the individuals who are helping in this special way those who have brought us to $1.5 million in pledges and gifts in a short period of time. In addition to Fr. Bob and Fr. 5 First Sunday of Advent November 27, Pastoral Sharing Pray as if everything depended on God. Work as if everything depended on you. St. Augustine This bulletin article is being written while we are in the final preparations for our Kairos XXVII Retreat which is being held the weekend of November Our Kairos Retreat is being held at Conference Point Center in Williams Bay, Wisconsin; and there are 59 retreatants who are juniors and seniors in high school participating in this life-changing experience. 10 high school senior peer ministry leaders and 10 adult leaders have been meeting once a week for over two months. We have prepared a schedule teeming with activities, prayers, and very special talks to touch the hearts of our 59 retreatants. The preparation has been filled with excitement, and we are ready to lead the retreatants through a wonderful faith-filled experience. It has been rewarding, as well as necessary, to contemplate, discuss, and plan for Kairos XXVII. We have had very spiritual prayers at the conclusion of each meeting. These prayerful opportunities have sparked our faith, hope, and love we will be sharing on Kairos XXVII. We can prepare for the retreat all we want, but in the end Thy will be done. The Holy Spirit has a very powerful presence on retreats. Sometimes things may happen that are beyond our control, but then you see God working through it all. We are instruments of God s peace and love. We show the retreatants God s friendship through our sharing and caring for them. It is through people that Jesus presence is revealed each and every day. May God bless the retreatants, the peer ministry leaders, and the adult leaders who shared the gift of St. Norbert Youth Ministry s Kairos XXVII Retreat! Now that Kairos XXVII has already unfolded last weekend, we would appreciate the prayers of the Catholic Community Of Northbrook that everyone involved continues to recognize the gifts of Kairos, God s Time, in their everyday lives as we live more faith-filled lives with gratitude for life itself! Maggie Bruce Youth Ministry Coordinator Why Is The RCIA Team Dismissed From MASS After The Homily? There are four phases to the RCIA process: 1. Evangelization & Pre-Catechumenate 2. Catechumenate-Catechetical, spiritual liturgical and apostolic formation 3. Purification and Enlightenment-Intense spiritual preparation 4. Mystagogy-Reflect on Christian Initiation We are currently in the Catechumenate Period. During this period, the Catechumen participates in what is known as a Dismissal Rite. During Mass, the Catechumens will be dismissed after the proclamation of scripture and homily before the intercessory prayers. The catechumens are dismissed to reflect deeper on the scripture and prayer and their meanings to its application of discipleship with a facilitator(s) at another location. This is also known as Breaking Open the Word, the understanding of the day s Gospel reading. We ask you to pray for the RCIA team as we journey closer to initiation into the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil. As we enter the season of Advent and begin to spiritually prepare for Christmas, please take note of the following opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturdays, 4:00-4:45pm at St. Norbert Sundays, 9:15-9:45am at OLB Monday, December 5, 7:00pm Advent Reconciliation Service at St. Norbert

7 First Sunday of Advent November 27, Sharing Ministry This year we really Scared Hunger! Thanks to everyone who participated the amazing organizers, the RE students, the teens and all who helped load the vans for delivery, the drivers, and everyone who contributed groceries. We collected 440 bags and nearly a dozen cases of food for a total of some 6000 items. Over 250 bags went to St. Margaret of Scotland, more than 150 to Catholic Charities, and the rest to the Northfield Food Pantry. Early November also sent 26 volunteers from our parish and 5 from St. Margaret to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. On this trip their assignment was to transfer 7000 pounds of rice into 3-lb. bags, then seal the bags and box them for delivery. The team exceeded its goal of 2000 bags, filling and packing 2536 in about 90 minutes. Their efforts earned some $375 credit for St. Margaret, enabling their pantry to purchase food from the GCFD at 7 cents a pound. This is the perfect weekend to say, Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who support the Sharing Ministry. If not us, who? If not now, when? Decorate for the Christmas Holidays Fill your home with the spirit and love of the Christmas season with fresh holiday wreaths and centerpieces. This year s sale will be held on the weekend of December 3/4 after all the Masses. Many items make perfect hostess gifts and holiday remembrances for friends and neighbors. Proceeds from the sale help support the work of The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Through your generosity, hundreds of teens and young women facing a crisis pregnancy will receive the compassionate counseling, social service referrals and material goods assistance they need to help them through this most difficult period of their lives and especially during this familycentered holiday season. 9 First Sunday of Advent November 27, Men's Club Raffle 2017 If the good you do will be forgotten tomorrow, do it anyway. St. Teresa of the Slums How often do we consider making a donation to a worthy cause and do not because our contribution will probably only have a momentary, if any, benefit? This could be a homeless person we pass on a cold corner as we walk to Union Station, or a child seeking donations for a community youth activity, or a solicitation from a missionary order of nuns working in a distant location we are not familiar with, or an request to contribute to a distant relative s participation in 5K walk to benefit a disease we have no understanding of, or an opportunity to make a meaningful donation to the annual Catholics of Northbrook Turkeys For The Poor campaign. St. Teresa understood this conflicting emotion. It was as real 8000 miles away in Calcutta as it is in Chicago today. She understood and appreciated that we cannot with any real level of certainty know which charitable act will be most effective. We have several idioms for this situation: Hitting our head against a wall; Being on a slippery slope; Tilting at windmills - all meaning that we don t know with confidence what the result of our effort will be. For 38 years the parishioners of Northbrook have taken up the mission begun without help by St. Norbert parishioner Gene Smith when he personally acquired and delivered turkeys to needy organizations in Chicago. Generations have carried on this campaign through the decades promoting the campaign, contacting the recipient organizations, coordinating the deliveries and collecting the funds. Over 75,000 turkeys and thousands of dollars in grocery coupons have been distributed to the neediest through the years. But we have evidence of the positive impact this program has had through the feedback received from the local organizations. While we don t know which individuals had significant benefits, we do know that many have based upon the witness provided by the organizations. This year we must raise $25,000 to maintain the Turkeys For The Poor program given the current price of turkeys. The collection will be the weekend of December If you will be away that weekend, please donate via the parish web site, or deliver or mail your contribution to the parish office. The time is now! WINGS is a shelter providing help to women and children who are victims of domestic violence. These women and children leave their abusive homes often with only the clothes on their backs. They leave everything behind seeking shelter and safety for themselves and their children. WINGS has wish lists for needed items: toys, household items, personal items, personal apparel, linens, and baby items. Monetary donations are also accepted.. You may choose gifts from the list and bring the NEW UNWRAPPED gifts and place them on the tables provided in the social area through Sunday, December 4. Decorated and labeled boxes will be on the tables for placement in the various categories of NEW UNWRAPPED gifts. We will also be accepting monetary donations to be placed in a labeled "donation box." Volunteers are needed after the Mass on Dec. 4, to help transfer the gifts to a secured room and place them in the labeled boxes there. Please take a tag off the tree; and when you return your gift (please secure the tag on top of the package), place an ornament on the tree, either your own or take one out of the box under the tree. We are requesting that you NOT WRAP the gifts to the children in order to make the distribution easier, but DO WRAP the gifts to the elderly. Please include a gift tag from the tree on all presents. The tags are color-coded which makes sorting gifts and delivering them an easier process. All gifts must be returned to the Church by December 11 th. St. Norbert Youth Ministry teens will sort the presents and get the gifts for the children to Catholic Charities and the gifts for the elderly to The Grove Of Northbrook Living & Rehab Center to be distributed to the needy before their Christmas parties!
