3 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 27, A New Mission for our New Parish! Our Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) has led a process to develop a new mission statement for our new parish, which we officially celebrate this weekend. The Visioning journey has focused on answering Father Bob s challenge: What is God calling the Catholic Community of Northbrook to be and do? The process, led by co-chairs Michael Nees and Jim Seeberg, included gathering input in focus group format from a cross section of ministry and organizational leaders and active parishioners. It included discernment of the Renew My Church initiative calls for building intentional disciples and stronger evangelization. It embraced our desire to be more welcoming for all- those in our greater community, those who need welcoming back, those who yearn for a closer relationship to Jesus, and all dealing with a very secular society. The heart of our mission is to ENCOUNTER CHRIST AND MAKE HIM KNOWN. The PPC will have ongoing implementation work, with additional communications to help our community embrace the mission, both personally and in our ministry and organization activities. We ask you to prayerfully reflect on what YOU can do- right now- to bring this mission to life as we aspire to become an even stronger, faith-filled community. OUR MISSION We are the Catholic Community of Northbrook, open to all, called by God, and inspired by the Holy Spirit to encounter Christ and make Him known Wherever you are on your own spiritual journey, we invite you to join us as we commit to Develop a deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ Celebrate God s presence and grace through prayer, vibrant worship, and the sacraments Build a welcoming, faith-filled community with a strong focus on fellowship and family Foster peace, social justice and compassion for all Share our God-given gifts as we serve one another and take the Good News out into the world

5 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 27, Pastoral Sharing Do I Allow God s Authority To Rule Over My Life? In today s first reading, the prophet Isaiah provides a vision in scripture of a prideful steward named Shebna who is demoted due to rejection of God s authority within the Judahite society. A prideful steward has a way of leading others to inappropriate attitudes. Shebna carved a large tomb for himself and allowed false security in war. Because of this arrogance, he lacked the leadership qualities God is looking for. Human pride does not align with God s will for his beloved people. So God striped the authority from Shebna and promoted Eliakim, God said, I will clothe him with your robe, gird him with your sash, confer on him your authority. God is intentional with the leaders He chooses to carry out his promises. Therefore God places authority on Eliakim to become father and guardian over his chosen people. The way Isaiah describes this promotion of authority reminds me of what Fr. Dan taught during the Teaching Mass about the robing of priestly liturgical vestments. The Stole, the narrow strip of fabric worn around the neck, is symbolic of their authority from the apostolic line of Peter. Unlike human desire, which lead humans to become prideful, this symbol of authority is covered by the Chasuble that represents Christ s mercy and love (Eph. 4:24). At Mass in the Gospel reading, Jesus asks, Who do you say I am? I respond to this question as Peter acknowledges, You are Christ, the Son of the living God. Just like Peter I need to continue the journey with Christ to understand the depths of this divine revelation. As I journey with Jesus, I must reflect, Who is Christ the Son of the living God as I understand Him to be by His revelation? Jesus taught with authority, directly speaking from God i.e. I say to you and I am statements. The emphasis of His teaching was the Reign of God and its coming. Jesus had preferential option for the poor, whether monetarily or in spirit, which is shown in His Beatitudes. He showed the Father to the people and drew from everyday life in describing the mystery of the Kingdom of God by using parables. He had explicitly prophesied His death through the use of His parables, passion predictions to His disciples and also summarizing His mission of redemptive service during the Last Supper. He explains and warns them of future danger. Those who do not have faith will not enter God s Kingdom. He demands love in God and faith in Him. Boundaries were broken and that gets Him into conflict in society for their good. Jesus raised the dead and He was raised from the dead into a new life. Jesus insisted on the love of God and of one another even enemies. Jesus begins the Kingdom of God by His manifestation of being Christ, the Son of the living God. Comparing the readings, leads me to ask, Do I allow God s authority to rule over my life? When pride creeps in, I notice the need to be vigilant to return to the source of authority both individually and communally. I want to remain in His good graces. May God bestow graciously as I follow Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God towards Calvary and into everlasting life. Frances Johnson Pastoral Associate

6 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 6 Wedding Banns During the month of September the following couple will promise to love one another as Christ has loved them. This generous vow, including the willingness to live together till death parts, to be faithful to one another, to give each other the right to children, God willing, gives us a vague, shadowy glimpse of what the divine love for us must be like. Freeman Adam Dobrzykowski & Tressa Graehling II Sharing Ministry The food pantry at St. Margaret of Scotland is very grateful to the parishioners of St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook for continuing to fill the baskets at church. Their clients are most appreciative of the quality and selection of groceries, personal hygiene items, and paper products, and cleaning supplies. Catholic Charities, Marillac House, and St. Joseph s Home for the Elderly are also appreciative of your efforts on their behalf. Right now we need soups, canned fruits and vegetable, tuna, and items for school lunches (juice boxes, snacks). Marillac House and the Little Sisters of the Poor send volunteers here to pick up their contributions. Drivers to St. Margaret are always needed. Anyone interested should contact Martha Boudewyns at mmboudewyns@gmail.com. If not us, who? If not now, when? Hiller Sterling Baptism Life in Christ through Baptism began for Healy Christopher, son of Christopher and Colette (Donegan) Freeman, Andrew Anthony, son of Tim and Amy (Kieffer) Hiller, Jane Jackson, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Jackson) Sterling, and Morgan Joy, daughter of Mark and Katarzyna (Kozyra) Wozny. (pictures on right) The Parish Family wishes to congratulate both the parents and godparents. We as a parish family pledge our support and prayers as they grow with us in living out the Christian message. Wozny

7 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 27, Confirmation for Adults Confirmation for Adults Christ instituted the Sacrament of Confirmation in his promise to send the Holy Spirit-The Advocate- Written in the Gospel of John 14: RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is a process for those adults interested in learning more about the Catholic faith in order to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. RCIA will begin meeting this fall. The first two months of the process are called the Inquiry Phase, where you will learn more about the Catholic faith by listening to presentations and personal reflections by a team of parishioners, sharing scripture, and participating in group discussions. After the Inquiry Phase, you will decide for yourself if this feels right for you. You then decide if you wish to receive further instruction in order to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil next spring. We will meet in the parish office at St. Norbert starting Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m. For information, contact Frances Johnson, Pastoral Associate at fjohnson@stnorbertparish.org or Is your age 19 years or older, baptized Catholic and catechized as far as reception of First Communion, but who never received the sacrament of Confirmation? Confirmation is the Sacrament in which the baptized are strengthened by the Holy Spirit so as to bear witness to Christ and take on the role of one of his disciples. Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard the Samaritans had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit: for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. Please attend the adult confirmation sessions at the parish office of St. Norbert at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 every Tuesday night starting September 27th. Confirmation ceremony will be celebrated with Bishop Francis Kane at St. Clement Parish Tuesday, November 28 th at 7:00PM. To register please your name, phone, and your parish name to fjohnson@stnorbertparish.org. Or for further information contact Frances Johnson, Pastoral Associate at the Catholic Community of Northbrook. Phone: Basic Ministry of Care Training Course The Fall Ministry of Care Training Course will be held from 7-9 p.m. on 5 consecutive Wednesdays: Sept 27, Oct 4,11,18 and 25 th at Presence St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Holbrook Hall 6930 West Touhy Avenue, Niles, IL. The final class will be held on Wednesday, Nov.8 from 7-9 p.m. at St. Norbert with Mona Lukas, Director Ministry of Care to learn about ministerial visitations and protocol of St Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish. Each session will focus on a particular aspect of the Ministry of Care: however, the unifying thread woven through all is a commitment to helping you develop the skills and confidence needed to be a source of comfort to those who are sick. Completion of this course qualifies you to receive the Archdiocesan mandate to bring Communion to the sick, homebound and hospitalized of our parish. In the coming weeks, we will be conducting a parish-wide Census. In part, this is something parishes typically do every 5-10 years. In addition, as part of the merging of two parishes, the databases containing the parishioner information must be combined. To simplify this tedious process, we hope to first clean up the databases to remove those families who no longer consider themselves members of the community. We are conducting the census FIRST with the OLB database, since it is smaller. You will received a mailing from the Catholic Community of Northbrook with your family information. We ask that you make sure that what we have on file is correct and up to date. Many have replace their landline with a cell phone, but haven t notified the parish. And many addresses are out of date, or not entered in the files. We hope to finish this process in a couple weeks, and then do the same on the St Norbert database. Thank you in advance for looking through the information you will receive, and returning it to us promptly! Those who do not respond and who do not participate in any way in the parish community will be removed from the database. We appreciate our parishioners and hope to be better able to communicate with them by going through this process. Save the Date! Men s CRHP will take place on November 4 & 5 at Our Lady of the Brook.
