3 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, Heinz site... I am back saying Mass and celebrating the Sacraments and while that is rather ordinary, I was struck this weekend by how many people commented on how I was feeling and that it was good to see me. That caught me a little off guard until I remembered that it was only a month ago I had surgery, informed as many as I could about it and now I am back to normal---- whatever that means. With those comments as the inspiration I thought I would give you all a little update on my condition. July 24 th I had a Squamous cell carcinoma removed from the roof of my mouth. The surgery went well and the surgeon felt very good about the margins. So that is good news. More than anything this was an inconvenience. It messed up my vacation plans and brought my annual retreat into question. The recovery was more painful than I thought it would be but it lasted only about 2 and a half weeks. The good news was that I lost some weight which I am in the process of, not intentionally, putting back on. All in all I am in good health. I am overwhelmed by the cards, notes, s that were passed on to me because of this interruption. I want to thank you all so very much. I must admit that I was quite frustrated with this most recent disease. It was not as serious or life threatening as the 3 other surgeries but it was inconvenient, painful (post-surgery) and surprising. The word that might best describe this whole experience is humbling. Whenever I use that word I am reminded of a conversation I had with Fr. Valker over 5 years ago. He was dying and he was sharing with me how humbling this process can be. To my knowledge I am not dying but I am being humbled, I am having to face my limitations. Frankly, I don t like that! I would rather have a plan, work on it and carry it through to completion. Lately, that has been a challenge over and over again. When I was on retreat a couple of weeks ago I brought this humbling to Jesus. I prayed about it and was once again lead to his journey and how humbling that was. He is the Son of God and was mocked, beaten, ridiculed, scourged, crucified and Humbled. That was His journey even though he was without sin. He did that for me, even though I sin. Now that is Humbling! Jesus, I love you and I thank you for the humility you endured for me. Your humility started with your birth through the Blessed Mother and carried on throughout your entire life even unto death. Help me to trust you, praise you and thank you in and through all things! Help me to accept this humbling life and your salvation that has no bounds!

5 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, The Second Greatest Story Ever Told Wedding Banns During the month of September the following couple will promise to love one another as Christ has loved them. This generous vow, including the willingness to live together till death parts, to be faithful to one another, to give each other the right to children, God willing, gives us a vague, shadowy glimpse of what the divine love for us must be like. Adam Dobrzykowski & Tressa Graehling III Sharing Ministry Just FYI: since the Sharing Ministry began in June 2014, we have collected 63,226 items and sent 4,430 bags/ boxes to the pantries we serve. In addition, Panera has donated vast numbers of baked goods bread, rolls, cookies, sweet rolls, etc. In June 2017 we received 1,575 items and delivered 95 bags/boxes. In July 1,043 items came in and 89 bags/boxes were sent to our pantries. We also received a Rice Bowl check for $500. Making it a habit to fill the baskets is making a difference for a great many people. In the Second Greatest Story Ever Told bestselling author Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, reveals St. John Paul II s witness for our time. Building on the prophetic voices of Sts. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Therese of Lisieux, Maximilian Kolbe, and Faustina Kowalska. 7 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, Confirmation for Adults Confirmation for Adults Christ instituted the Sacrament of Confirmation in His promise to send the Holy Spirit-The Advocate- Written in the Gospel of John 14: RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is a process for those adults interested in learning more about the Catholic faith in order to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. RCIA will begin meeting this fall. The first two months of the process are called the Inquiry Phase, where you will learn more about the Catholic faith by listening to presentations and personal reflections by a team of parishioners, sharing scripture, and participating in group discussions. After the Inquiry Phase, you will decide for yourself if this feels right for you. You then decide if you wish to receive further instruction in order to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil next spring. We will meet in the parish office at St. Norbert starting Wednesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m. For information, contact Frances Johnson, Pastoral Associate at fjohnson@stnorbertparish.org or Is your age 19 years or older, baptized Catholic and catechized as far as reception of First Communion, but who never received the sacrament of Confirmation? Confirmation is the Sacrament in which the baptized are strengthened by the Holy Spirit so as to bear witness to Christ and take on the role of one of His disciples. Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard the Samaritans had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit: for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. Please attend the adult confirmation sessions at the parish office of St. Norbert at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 every Tuesday night starting September 19th. Confirmation ceremony will be celebrated with Bishop Francis Kane at Queen of Angels Parish on Tuesday, November 28 th at 7:00PM. To register please your name, phone, and your parish name to fjohnson@stnorbertparish.org. Or for further information contact Frances Johnson, Pastoral Associate at the Catholic Community of Northbrook. Phone: Basic Ministry of Care Training Course The Fall Ministry of Care Training Course will be held from 7-9 p.m. on 5 consecutive Wednesdays: Sept 27, Oct 4,11,18 and 25 th at Presence St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Holbrook Hall 6930 West Touhy Avenue, Niles, IL. The final class will be held on Wednesday, Nov.8 from 7-9 p.m. at St. Norbert with Mona Lukas, Director Ministry of Care to learn about ministerial visitations and protocol of St Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish. Each session will focus on a particular aspect of the Ministry of Care: however, the unifying thread woven through all is a commitment to helping you develop the skills and confidence needed to be a source of comfort to those who are sick. Completion of this course qualifies you to receive the Archdiocesan mandate to bring Communion to the sick, homebound and hospitalized of our parish. Topics addressed are The Experience of Suffering, Pastoral Listening Skills and the Experience of Suffering, Theology of Suffering and Sickness, Eucharistic Theology, Spirituality of the Minister, and Ministerial Procedures in Hospitals, Nursing Facilities, Homes and Hospice. 8 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 8 S T E M M I N G YO U T H V I O L E N C E Violent crime in Chicago Back in 2009/10 in response to youth violence in the city of Chicago, the Office of Peace and Justice and Office of Black Catholic Deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago initiated meetings to find programs that have been proven to or promise to minimize violence. All evidence pointed to the home, where children first learn how to live. It was clear that the key to emotionally healthy young people was to strengthen families. Efforts should be made to help parents be effective in the most important job they will ever have in life, raising their children. One significant program that developed from that initiative is Parenting for Non-Violence (P4NV), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that since 2012 has been conducting parenting workshops for families at risk. The organization has provided parenting skills training to more than 760 families resulting in some 1,900 children nurtured, supported and protected within a safe and stable home and community environment. P4NV has provided workshops in the communities of Auburn-Gresham, Back of the Yards, Berwyn, Chatham, East Garfield Park, Englewood, West Englewood, Near Westside, Maywood, North Lawndale, Roseland, Ukrainian Village, Washington Park and Wicker Park. Attend informational meeting Friday, Sept. 15-5:30 p.m. at Faith, Hope and Charity Church, 191 Linden Ave., Winnetka. Refreshments will be served. RSVP or rwhite@parenting4nonviolence.org
