3 Third Sunday of Advent December 16, While reflecting on today s gospel reading, I can easily visualize myself among the crowd that gathered in front of John the Baptist as he preached repentance in anticipation of the coming Messiah. This cluster that was listening to John the Baptist was comprised of people from many walks of life including soldiers and tax collectors. These witnesses seem to be seeking an answer to the question of how to best prepare for the coming of the Lord. They ask, What should we do? And John responds by telling them to repent and to change the way they live their lives. He was telling them to get ready. It s Advent 2018 and I find myself asking the same question that the members of this crowd asked John the Baptist during the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, What should I do? Or, how should I prepare. Am I ready? Am I prepared for the coming of the Lord? From my reading of the Sermon on the Mount, I can gain an understanding of how Jesus wanted me to live my life. As I read the Beatitudes and reflect on my life, I come away with some areas on which I can begin my self-assessment: Am I taking care of the poor? Do I comfort those who mourn? Do I protect the meek? Am I a peacemaker and do I support peacemakers in our world? Do I stand up for the persecuted? As I contemplate these questions I come up with some questions to myself that are derived from some recent experiences. What was my response to the person sitting on the sidewalk asking for change as I got off the train? Did I attend that wake for my neighbor s parent that I hardly knew? Am I voting for politicians who reflect Jesus s love for the poor, meek and persecuted or am I voting simply due to my party affiliation? What would John tell me to do if I was in that crowd on the banks of the Jordan River? One of the beautiful gifts that my Catholic faith offers to me is the sacrament of Reconciliation. It took me many, many years to fully appreciate how powerful this sacrament is. Asking God to forgive me for my sins is the first step in my quest to prepare myself during the Advent season. I find that I can t begin my spiritual inventory without first confessing my sins in church to a priest. Once done, I feel that I can then clearly see what it is that I need to do to prepare, to be ready, to be able to hear God s answer to my question, What should I do? Stephen Schacherer Principal, St. Norbert School Pastor Selection Process Thank you to all parishioners who participated in the November 20 th meeting with Bishop Bartosic and his representatives including Fr. Mike Knotek, Executive Secretary of the Diocesan Priests Placement Board. It provided an opportunity to provide input on strengths and challenges of the parish, what specific talents and skills are needed for the next pastor, and what programs contribute greatly to the parish vitality. Additional input may be ed to Eileen Lum (elum@archchicago.org). Fr. Knotek outlined the next steps including interested candidates visiting our parish and meeting with staff leadership team, and a January Parish Information Night during which candidates meet with 3-4 non-staff PPC/PFC leadership representatives from several parishes at one location to get more parish information. Candidates submit parish preferences in February, the placement board reviews and submits recommendation in early March to Cardinal Cupich, who ultimately decides. We expect to hear sometime in March. Again, Father Bob s term concludes July 1, Parish Council and Staff have engaged with Fr. Knotek to assure that the process keeps our children and our community safe, and have been extremely pleased with the response. While we will miss Fr Bob greatly, it will be very important to warmly welcome our new pastor.

All left warm feelings. Jane Marmet Advent Reconciliation A Communal Reconciliation Service with individual confessions will be held at St. Catherine Laboure Church at 7:00 PM on December 18. Many parishes offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation in a communal service during the season of Advent and Lent. The communal service is an opportunity to join our sisters and brothers from our neighboring parishes as we continue to work together through the Renew My Church in asking for forgiveness and healing during this important time of the year. Enough priests will be available for individual confessions and you will not have to wait long in the confessional line. Simbang Gabi: Dec. 21 St. Catherine Laboure in Glenview will hold its annual Simbang Gabi celebration on Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 pm. It is an Advent Mass, with Filipino tradition. Experience the spirituality of the season, the anticipation and expectation of the Birth of Our Lord, and fellowship with faith communities from throughout the Archdiocese. The Sharing Ministry is especially grateful for the continued support of our parishioners in the Christmas season, and so are the pantries we serve. One generous donation of time is consistently made by the drivers who deliver the bags and boxes of food and other supplies to St. Margaret of Scotland on Tuesdays. The Christmas Sharing Commi ee Senior Club - December Mee ng Monday, Dec. 17, Grace Hall 9 to 11 am Join us for our Annual Christmas Celebra on, with a fun-filled White Elephant gi exchange, a raffle benefi ng Mercy Home, and caroling by the preschool children. (White Elephant should be wrapped.) A white elephant gi exchange is a party game where white elephant gi s are exchanged during fes vi es. The goal of a white elephant party is usually to entertain rather than to gain. The term white elephant refers to an extravagant but ineffectual gi that cannot be easily disposed of, based on the legend of the King of Siam giving rare albino elephants to cour ers who had displeased him, so that they might be ruined by the animals' upkeep costs. Our gi s are not extravagant, but simply something lovely that does not break your heart to part with.

9 Third Sunday of Advent December 16, St. Norbert Middle School Science students 6 th graders study Earth and Space Science by doing many hands-on laboratory experiments and inves- ga ons. They learn to look deeply into the structure of our planet Earth and beyond. Here, students perform an ac vity about how hurricane strength winds affect wave height. 7 th graders look closely at the physical world by studying ma er and energy in a Physical Science course. Here, they perform an experiment to demonstrate whether temperature affects elas city. The 7 th graders also par cipate in the Science Fair by doing a project of their choice. 8 th graders delve deeply into the world of Life Science. From the niest organisms on Earth to how en re ecosystems work, students look closely at what it means to be alive. Here, students use stereomicroscopes and compare the images seen to those viewed under a compound light microscope.

12 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 12 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, Gaudete Sunday, is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice! This year s Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary s visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Men s Club Christmas Party The Men s Club will hold its monthly meeting and Christmas Party on Monday, December 17 at 7:30 pm in the Church Hall Basement. All adult men of our Catholic Community are invited and encouraged to attend. Please come out and meet some new friends, build upon old acquaintances, and help to serve the needs of our Catholic Community. Dinner will be served after the meeting. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them distinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many people of Mary s presence at the heart of the Advent mystery.
