5 , Wedding Banns During the month of December the following couples will promise to love one another as Christ has loved them. This generous vow, including the willingness to live together till death parts, to be faithful to one another, to give each other the right to children, God willing, gives us a vague, shadowy glimpse of what the divine love for us must be like. Michael Labadie & Hannah Risinger III Michael Forde & Jena Krueger II St Norbert Construction Update This project will see an expansion of our Gathering Space, a new addition near the parish office, the addition of an elevator to help parishioners access the lower level more easily, two ADA-compliant restrooms, redesign of our Baptismal Font, and a beautiful new Plaza to welcome us to the Church. Completion is targeted for the spring. Weekday Masses are at OLB. (Monday Friday) We believe that we will have the narthex fully ready for Weekend access by Dec. 5. Work will continue into February. The weekly parish E-Newsletter will be the most timely method of communicating...get your name on the list if you aren t receiving it. to: amy@olbparish.org. Facebook has an album of 165+ photos to follow the progress, both SN and OLB pages. Get a look behind the scenes! CORRECTION: In the Nov. 11 bulle n, we published a list of Veteran s submi ed by parishioners to honor their service to our country. CDR John V. Tobin, son of Rose-Marie Tobin, was inadvertently listed with a cross next to his name, indica ng veterans who are deceased. He is alive and well, currently patrolling the Mediterranean, North, Bal c and Black Seas, off the coasts of Russia, Finland, Syria and Turkey. I deeply apologize for the error, which was made when transcribing names from s into a master list. CDR Tobin, and all our servicemen and women, con nue each day to make sacrifices to protect our freedom and our lives. The error has been corrected for next year, but should never have happened. I am sorry for the pain it caused his family members. Amy Principi Snowstorm Delay The parish office was without internet and had only partial power after the recent snowstorm. Since we were closed for Thanksgiving, no was accessible from Nov. 21 through Nov. 29 in many cases. Thus, some submissions might not have been included in this bulletin. Apologies for any missing items. The parish phone was also out during this time. If you tried to call, we apologize for not being able to answer. As of press time, we expected restoration on Nov. 30.

6 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 6 Man to Man Saturday, Dec. 1 Our Lady of the Brook Social Media as an Asset to Our Faith Some have said that we are living through the greatest communication shift in the last 500 years. Social media present an unprecedented opportunity for connecting people and building communities - yet people feel lonelier and Fr. Dan Folwaczny more divided than ever. How can we navigate the waters of social media to bring authentic human interaction and the message of the gospel into digital spaces? Join us on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Our Lady of the Brook, 3700 Dundee. A light breakfast is available from 7:30 to 8:00, followed by the presentation from 8 to 10 am. All men of the parish are welcome For more info, Call (847) Thank You! Dear Fr. Heinz, Thank you for your donation of assorted men s clothing for the clothing room at the Catholic Charities office in Des Plaines. Your generosity helps us meet the basic needs of families in the north suburbs. Our clothing room provides clean, gently used clothing, shoes and outer wear to more than 2100 households with nearly 7200 people every year. We also provide new socks and undergarments, toiletries, small household items and other necessities to families in need. The clothing room is just one of 150 programs offered by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, which helps nearly one million people a year in Cook and Lake counties without regard to religious belief or background. Founded in 1917, Catholic Charities has been fulfilling its mission of hope for 100 years. We couldn't do it without generous donors like you. Thank you again for your support. With your help, we are making a difference in the lives o those in need, Regards, Adriana Kelly, North Regional Director Sharing Ministry Donations for Christmas dinners need to be in by next weekend, Dec. 8/9, to be delivered to St. Margaret of Scotland on Dec. 11. Side dishes for Christmas, baking supplies, snack foods, and canned fruit will be most welcome at the pantries we serve. Holiday foods are often luxury items for the pantries clients, and they go a long way to brighten the season. For now, we are issuing a moratorium on all pasta. In addition, we continue to need green beans, baked beans, and pork & beans. Till further notice, no more kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, etc. If not us, who? If not now, when?

7 , As is the custom of St. Norbert, we will be collecting gifts for the Giving Tree. Please take a Giving Tree tag at the entrances of St. Norbert Church; and when you return your gift (secure the tag on the package), place the gifts in the designated area at the entrance of the Church. Gifts will be brought to the Vineyard for safekeeping and sorting. We are requesting that you NOT WRAP the gifts to the children in order to make the distribution easier, but DO WRAP the gifts to the elderly. Please include a gift tag from the tree on all presents. The tags are color-coded which makes sorting and delivering easier. All gifts must be returned to the Church by December 12. St. Norbert Youth Ministry teens sort the presents and get the Children s gifts to Catholic Charities and gifts for the elderly to The Grove Of Northbrook Living & Rehab Center to be distributed to the needy before their Christmas parties! There is a specific need at The Grove for 65 gifts for elderly men and 80 gifts for elderly women, so please consider taking a gift tag for the elderly so we do not run short. Listening Session On Wednesday, November 14, the parish leadership held a Listening Session open to all to address the recent news about the Clergy Abuse scandal in our Church. The evening was facilitated by Dr. Rich Blue. Rich is the founder and Clinical Director of the Center for Christian Life Enrichment, a Christian counseling practice located in Northbrook for over 30 years. Over forty people attended, many eager to give voice to their concerns. After opening with prayer and scripture, they were invited to share their thoughts. Among the thoughts and concerns raised: This scandal is painful for all, including priests. It is hard to read and listen to the news. Transparency is necessary, all the way up to the Vatican. Secrecy hurts everyone, and causes anger. They do not feel that the hierarchy is being open. The Bishops need to be accountable. Appreciation was expressed to our parish priests for taking leadership and stepping up to bring it into the open. Suggestion given that more lay people become involved in the church. Discouraging to hear the recent news that the Pope decided to delay any decisions on lay oversight. Suggestion given that this scandal, and previous ones, has particularly had an effect on young people, pushing them away from the church. Adult children are not coming to church, citing the scandal. It is difficult to defend the church. There needs to be a vehicle for the laity to have a voice within the church. They need to do something big to overcome this. We are blessed to have our leadership, our church, and the gift of faith. We must remain hopeful. Dr. Rich s summary at the end of the evening reflected the pain and frustration that was expressed in the room. However, hope can be powerful. A life of faith involves embracing the concept that we are powerless. But we have the freedom to decide how to respond. And we can respond with hope as well as action. Fr. Bob concluded the evening by indicating that we will continue to listen. Further comments can be submitted to MissionInAction@stnorbertparish.org. There is not another meeting scheduled. But there are many opportunities for prayer, including group prayer, which is powerful. A statement by the Cardinal is on page 14 of this bulletin.

14 The Catholic Community of Northbrook Northbrook, Illinois 12 The Bishops in Baltimore November 20, 2018 The big news at the annual fall meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops was the Holy See s decision that we delay adopting new policies for the disciplining of bishops accused of misconduct and the mishandling of cases involving abuse of minors by clergy. The president of our conference informed the body of bishops of this on the morning of Nov. 12; I was given advance notice just before the meeting by Cardinal DiNardo, president of the USCCB. It is not clear whether the Holy See had specific concerns with the proposals being presented. We were told that we should wait until the meeting in February when the Holy Father is gathering all the presidents of the bishops conferences to address child protection, so that our decisions can be informed by listening to our brother bishops from around the world. While the request that we delay was disappointing, given the work done in preparation for our meeting, I rose to encourage a pathway forward. As I remarked, there was no reason why the body of bishops could not take up the discussion as scheduled, fine tune the documents and then take a resolution ballot to make clear to our people where we stand, but also to give the president of our conference a clear indication of the mind of the bishops in the United States as he prepares to participate in the February meeting. My final suggestion was that we should meet again in March, or shortly after the February meeting in Rome, to take up our proposals, informed by the input of other bishops conferences from around the world, and then adopt new policies that build on the progress we have made since That progress is substantial and includes full background checks on employees and volunteers, safe-environment training for adults and children, procedures for mandatory reporting to civil authorities, cooperating with law enforcement, transparency in communicating with parishioners and outreach through a victims-assistance team. What was missing in our procedures were clear provisions for disciplining bishops who mishandle cases or abuse minors. That is the work we now will need to complete after the February meeting in Rome. To my mind, in taking this unprecedented action of calling the presidents of the world s bishops conferences to Rome, the Holy Father is making clear that he recognizes the urgency of this issue and that this is a watershed moment in the life of the church. Time and again, he has shown his resolve to comprehensively address this scourge, by removing bishops who mishandle cases of the abuse of minors and by disciplining cardinals and bishops for misconduct, to the point of laicizing some. Pope Francis is calling for radical reform in the life of the church, for he understands that this crisis is about the abuse of power and a culture of protection and privilege, which have created a climate of secrecy, without accountability for misdeeds. All of that has to end, not only in terms of how it risks the safety of children, but also how the abuse of power by certain leaders undermines the Gospel and injures the faith lives of the people the ordained have been sent to serve. The meeting in February also demonstrates that Pope Francis does not believe that the abuse of minors by clergy is strictly an American or Western problem, but rather he knows that it is a global one for the church. We bishops will have time to prayerfully consider our next steps in January, when we will gather for a retreat at Chicago s own seminary in Mundelein. The Holy Father has chosen the Capuchin Father Raniero Cantalamessa to lead the retreat. He has served as papal preacher of the papal household since 1980, when St. Pope John Paul II appointed him. I very much need your prayers and ask you to pray for the bishops as they prepare to take action in the weeks and months ahead. I am convinced we will get this right, but only with God s help and the involvement of all in the church, especially laypeople. That is my prayer. Please make it your own.
